. Desde el mes de Septiembre vengo siguiendo cada semana el episodio estreno de esta serie de Showtime basada en la película que llevaba el mismo nombre y que fue estrenada en 1980 y protagonizada por Richard Gere, narrando la vida personal de un gigoló residenciado en California el cual se ve involucrado en un crimen que no cometió.
Every week since September I have been following the premiere episode of this Showtime series based on the movie of the same name, which was released in 1980 and starred Richard Gere, narrating the personal life of a gigolo residing in California who is involved in a crime he did not commit.
Si bien la serie está basada en una película que ya se había realizado hace más de 40 años, era la primera vez que yo me encontraba con ella pero ahora en formato de serie y protagonizada por Jon Bernthal; que de hecho, fue uno de los principales motivos por el cual me interesé en la serie, había escuchado de él como actor y lo había visto actuar en alguna que otra película pero nunca había visto un trabajo en solitario y tomando las riendas de un proyecto como figura principal.
Although the series is based on a movie that had already been made more than 40 years ago, it was the first time that I met her but now in a series format and starring Jon Bernthal; that in fact, it was one of the main reasons why I became interested in the series, I had heard of him as an actor and had seen him act in some other movie but I had never seen a solo job and taking the reins of a project as the main figure.

Solo con pensar en un gigoló puede volar tu imaginación, pero al momento en el que comienzas a ver la serie, muchas de esas ideas, presunciones y tabúes que puedes conocer sobre ellos, poco a poco comenzarán a disiparse. Jon Bernthal encarna la vida de Julian Kaye, un gigoló americano que a pesar de la mala vida que llevó durante muchos años y que lo llevaron a cumplir una condena por un crimen que no cometió, logra encontrar cierta redención después de que se descubriera que no fue culpable de dicho crimen.
Just thinking about a gigolo can blow your imagination, but the moment you start watching the series, many of those ideas, presumptions and taboos that you may know about them, will slowly start to dissipate. Jon Bernthal embodies the life of Julian Kaye, an American gigolo who, despite the bad life he led for many years and which led him to serve a sentence for a crime he did not commit, manages to find some redemption after it was discovered that he was not guilty of said crime.
Julian, una vez libre, comienza a encontrar pistas y ver señales de lo que pudo ocurrir hace 15 años con la muerte de una mujer que lo llevó a la cárcel. Pero intentando descubrir la verdad encuentra más de lo que estaba buscando y es ahí donde comienza a ver que su vida como trabajador sexual no solo lo dejó marcado desde la juventud por eventos perturbadores, sino que también lo alejaron del amor de su vida, dos veces.
Julian, once free, begins to find clues and see signs of what could have happened 15 years ago with the death of a woman that landed him in jail. But trying to discover the truth he finds more than what he was looking for and that is where he begins to see that his life as a sex worker not only left him scarred from youth by disturbing events, but also alienated him from the love of the life of him, twice.

La serie me atrapó desde el capítulo 1, fue una sorpresa conocer la historia del personaje principal, el título de la serie es solo una forma de atraer a una audiencia que tal vez ya estaba familiarizada por el trabajo que se hizo previo a la serie pero que ahora se presentaba en un formato distinto y que tal vez haya realizado cambios en la historia que originalmente fue contada en la pantalla grande.
The series caught me from chapter 1, it was a surprise to learn the history of the main character, the title of the series is just a way to attract an audience that was perhaps already familiar with the work that was done prior to the series but that it was now presented in a different format and that it may have made changes to the story that was originally told on the big screen.
Como lo dije anteriormente, Jon Bernthal me dejó gratamente sorprendido, humanizó de tal manera a su personaje que, en ocasiones, me era imposible reconocer que el hombre había estado involucrado en ese estilo de vida tan consumidor y perturbador. Ver que el tratamiento del personaje se concentró más en su ser emocional y mental que en físico y sexual le dio otro color a la historia, fue presentada, como lo dice su título, como una serie que iba a tratar el aspecto sexual de un gigoló californiano, pero la línea narrativa cambió y ofreció un personaje vulnerable, dolido, confundido, desorientado y muy necesitado desde aspectos más allá de los carnales.
As I said before, Jon Bernthal left me pleasantly surprised, he humanized his character in such a way that, at times, it was impossible for me to recognize that the man had been involved in such a consuming and disturbing lifestyle. Seeing that the treatment of the character focused more on his emotional and mental being than on his physical and sexual nature, gave another color to the story, it was presented, as its title says, as a series that was going to deal with the sexual aspect of a gigolo. Californian, but the narrative line changed and offered a vulnerable character, hurt, confused, disoriented and very needy from aspects beyond the carnal.
Como actor, Bernthal destacó en todos las facetas en las que su personaje se desarrolló durante los 8 episodios de esta temporada; pasó por temperamentos volátiles y de ira, hasta momentos de rendición y llanto. Abordó temas en la masculinidad desde un punto de vista emocional, muy alejado del estereotipo mal acostumbrado de un hombre iracundo y sexualmente insaciable y eso me gustó mucho. Las pocas escenas de sexo fueron justificadas aunque para mi fueron innecesarias, pero entiendo de donde vienen y el motivo de su adición a los capítulos en donde ocurrió.
As an actor, Bernthal stood out in all the facets in which his character developed during the 8 episodes of this season; he went through volatile and angry tempers, to moments of surrender and tears. He approached issues of masculinity from an emotional point of view, far removed from the misused stereotype of an angry and sexually insatiable man, and I liked that a lot. The few sex scenes were justified although for me they were unnecessary, but I understand where they come from and the reason for adding him to the chapters where it happened.

De los personajes más resaltantes puedo asegurarles que todos los que tuvieron protagonismo en esta temporada fueron de mi agrado. Por primera vez en mi vida, tuve la oportunidad de ver actuar a Rosie O'Donnell y vaya que actuó; tal vez lo que no me gustó de su participación fue su historia personal hasta cierto punto, pero la entiendo, hizo un trabajo bastante interesante desde mi punto de vista, porque nunca la había visto actuar. Lo mismo con Gretchen Mol quien estuvo a cargo del protagónico femenino, un trabajo excepcional y demandante, que llevó a cabo con elegancia y credibilidad.
Of the most outstanding characters I can assure you that all those who had a leading role in this season were to my liking. For the first time in my life, I had the chance to see Rosie O'Donnell perform and boy did she perform; maybe what I didn't like about her participation was her personal history to a certain extent, but I understand her, she did a very interesting job from my point of view, because she had never seen her act. The same with Gretchen Mol who was in charge of the female lead, an exceptional and demanding job, which she carried out with elegance and credibility.
Gabriel LaBelle quien interpretó 2 papeles en la serie, siendo el más versátil de todo el elenco aunque parecía trabajo sencillo, fue quien más resonó en mi por su trabajo (después de Bernthal, por supuesto). Fue un elenco de altura y la ejecución dio frutos porque todos encajaron perfectamente en la historia; nadie faltaba ni nadie sobraba.
Gabriel LaBelle who played 2 roles in the series, being the most versatile of the entire cast although it seemed like a simple job, was the one who most resonated with me for his work (after Bernthal, of course). It was a tall cast and the execution paid off because they all fit perfectly into the story; no one was missing and no one was left over.

Tremenda producción, luego de atravesar un proceso largo de 8 años para llevarlo a la pantalla chica, se logró adaptar el guión original y llevarlo en un formato comprimido de serie. Y aunque la serie fue recortada de 10 a 8 episodios, creo que se abordó lo necesario y los cliffhangers espero sean descifrados para la próxima temporada (la cual aún estoy en la espera de conocer si será renovada o no).
Tremendous production, after going through a long process of 8 years to bring it to the small screen, it was possible to adapt the original script and take it in a compressed series format. And although the series was cut from 10 to 8 episodes, I think the necessary was addressed and the cliffhangers I hope will be deciphered for the next season (which I am still waiting to know if it will be renewed or not).
Mi recomendación es que vayan y se disfruten la serie, va a ser algo muy diferente a lo que tienen en mente porque toma direcciones inesperadas pero necesarias para narrar una historia que va más allá del sexo y la lujuria.
My recommendation is that you go and enjoy the series, it will be something very different from what you have in mind because it takes unexpected but necessary directions to tell a story that goes beyond sex and lust.
