Hello Steemian, I hope you all are having a wonderful day. And I am having difficulty to understand and answer few questions, but most important of all is what the hell is going on? Case in point PADMAAVAT
Disclaimer: I am not a Historian; I am just a common movie lover who is pissed off from the behavior of the board and the attitude of the general public over the controversy over the movie. I point that I put forth are my personal opinion. And this post is just my questions and nothing more. (Please do not kill me for having an opinion)
The movie Padmaavat is due to release on 25JAN2018. And even before the release, there have been lots and lots of controversy over this particular movie. From hordes of people storming into the set and vandalizing it, to the setting ablaze to the costume and death threat to the director, actors, and people involved in this. Heck, even politicians came forward, NOT in support, but to announce bounty over the Actor’s & Director’s head (Amounting up to 15crores ~ 2.36M USD) Again small disclaimer: the calculations of the bounty amount is not correct and I wouldn’t take it seriously as these bounties were announced by politician who’s reason for the rise in taxes is not having funds. I would also like you to know that the stress ball has burst in my hand and I am punching the table like a psycho. Yes, the stories surrounding from the shooting days of the movie till the promotion are scary and really unsettling.
Ok for those who has no idea, of what this is all about? And what I am talking about its just a movie directed by now infamous Sanjay Leela Bhansali who has done some of the amazing movies in the past but lately has picked a knack for controversy. This time he has decided to so a movie on an epic poem written in 1540AD.
Spoiler Alert: I will be discussing something that may or may not be happening in the movie, but there are people who are convinced that it has been depicted wrongly in the movie and would be ready to do whatever is necessary. So spoiler alert as they have their own story interpretations and I have my own.
And here is what I understood; Princess Padmini and talking parrot were friends, the parrot escaped and ended up at Ratansen palace where the parrot told him about the unmatched beauty of the princess. Ratansen goes to the Singhal, with a little bit of action wins over and get to marry princess Padmini. And when Alauddin Khalji, comes to know about the beauty he also goes after her. Khajli declares war over Chittoor, but the Ratansen get killed in battle with the different kingdom and Queen Padmini ends her life with the king. By the time Khajli’s arrive the kingdom’s women have committed Jauhar (mass self-immolation) & men fought to the death.
What is wrong with the story? Nothing, it is perfectly fine. In fact, it is a story of love, war, valor and honor. It is a perfect for a movie adaptation.
Why are certain people objecting to the movie? Because it makes total sense to oppose something that is epic. You wouldn’t believe the objection that they have in the movie. First of all let me clarify you that Ratansen & Khajli were historical figures and Queen Padmini is considered to be a fictional character, and her existence is disputed. And people are are fighting her depiction in the movie. Calling in historical inaccurate. Well, a number of historians who have concurred on it. One even said.
"In the contemporary period, there is no mention of this event, no accounts of Padmavati by Amir Khusrau, a prolific writer of the era and a courtier of Alauddin Khilji. This is the misuse of both fiction and history. There is no historical evidence of this Padmavati event - this story is a poet's imagination."
Referred the controversy as "manufacturing of hurt sentiments clearly with an eye on politics."
But I am putting forth my opinion and I am in no way concluding. All the points are open for debate. :D
Fiction or not, if a director is making a move about anything it is his responsibility to get the fact-checked on the source before the statement “based on” so and so is released to the press, especially in the historic event and biographies.
The CBFC has been playing fast and loose with the rule and has no control over the situation what so ever. They are there to certify a movie. But lately, it is just ridiculous cuts only in the movies, based on the rules & guidelines designed in early days.
And finally the main controlling factors, the audience. You all have a right to have opinion and freedom to express it over blogs, social media and I think the team who is behind the work would love to get what they deserve to let it be your appreciation or curses. Do exercise the right. If you don’t like a movie you don’t have to watch them, you can even advise others not to watch. But remember they too have right to choose whether or not to watch a movie.

And remember these are movies and not history lessons if you want history lessons pick up a book and read. Don’t expect to clear the history exams based on the knowledge you have acquired from Mohenjo Daro (The movie)
