Hello Steemians, I hope you are having a wonderful day, and I am celebrating India’s Republic Day. 26Jan is the republic day of India on this very day in 1950 the constitution of India came into effect. So how, do I make this day special for a movie freak like me? I can do that by revisiting the movies, which are patriotic. These are the movies which hold special places in the CBFC and the general public alike.
So I noted down the list of the movies which are patriotic and trust me the list was very so, I trim it down to 5 movies which were shown part of my growing up Krantiveer, Sarfarosh, Lakshya, Roja, and Tirangaa. And the random dice roll turned up to be Tirangaa, @vishalsingh4997 did suggest this for review 2 weeks back and I am happy that I get to do this. And @vishalsingh4997 I promise that I will get to Dosti in a next few days.
Spoiler Alert: You might have already seen this movie several times but it is fair only to give a spoiler alert as I will be discussing the movie the plot and character developments. If you haven’t seen the movie you should watch it, highly recommended.
Without further Ado, Let's start the review. This is Tirangaa (1993) (Tri-Color flag of India)
The movie starts with 3 kidnapping in first three minutes of the movie. And I guarantee at least one of these three kidnapping can appear in the list of most offhand kidnapping. And those 3 victims were the scientist of missile technology. By the fourth minute, we have the villain revealing the master plan of having the missile production (In-house) development and the destruction of the Nation. (Now, I always admired the villains from that era. They were visionaries and dedicated and they know their evil plan is stupid but they follow their passion. They aim higher, like taking control of entire state or nation. They have cool lairs for themselves most of the time surrounded by either sharks or crocodiles) Next is the reveal of the villain himself and trust me it is just the 5th minute of the movie. There were these weird fixations at that time with the reveal of any character they the camera start with the shoe. So be prepared for lots of frames dedicated to the feet. The walking feet, the running feet, drunk feet, the feet without shoes, with shoes, white shoes, black shoes and what not. To be honest it was 1993 and trust me movies from that era has more contents and dialogues which we can focus on. Anyway, we are introduced to our villain Pralaynath Gundaswamy which literally translates as mayhem(nath) lord of Goon played by Deepak Shirke.
And like every villain of that era there is a dedicated police officer or authority figure who is the blockade for such villain, In this movie its Deputy Inspector General Rudrapratap Chauhan played by Mr. Suresh Oberoi. By the first shot, you will know that this character is not going to last in this movie. If you know the formulae there is always one guy who is there to inspire others and who dies in the movie. DIG Rudrapratap is one such guy he is more of an uncle Ben character.
And who did he Inspired? A character so badass, who’s music theme is of a police siren, and so hot-headed, powerful and honest that none other than Nana Patekar can do justice to him. I cannot imagine anybody else playing the role of Inspector Wadale. Within first 20mins the DIG is murdered by the Gundaswamy (You know, for boss or villain of his stature, he does a lot of killing himself. Remember those 3 abducted scientists? Yeah, He kills 2 of them) which lead to an epic monologue by Inspector Wadale.
Now, you see the point why no other actor could have done it better. And the Gundaswamy carries out his operations of smuggling weapons, gold (You know what he is so evil he is already into any illegal business you can think off). So Home ministry has decided to let the military handle the situation at hand and calls one-man-army to deal with Gundaswamy. Enters the epicness level legendary Brigadier Suryadev Singh, A decorated war hero and cool minded strategist, played by the legendary veteran actor Raaj Kumar.
And thus the Brigadier and the Inspector teams up and against the great evil Pralaynath Gundaswamy. And the game of suspense and thrill begins. I will not go into the plots in details because there are many subplots and frankly speaking some of them are just random events. And movie manages to touch all the clichés of that era even getting the extra point of “main tumhare bacche ki maa banane wali hun” the teen pregnancy clichés which are usually reserved for either villain or villains son. But the movie stayed true to its major focus the corruption and the enemy within. In their quest of bringing down the Gundaswamy, brigadier and Inspector go from one justice wing to other exposing their weakness and bringing the culprits to justice.
If you look at the technical aspects of the movie you will find many mistakes which I am willing to overlook as that would be nitpicking. But one particular scene has been bothering me a lot. The brigadier getting into the car scene, if you don’t remember takes a look, here the car comes in and two guards are getting into the front seat with the driver.
Conclusion
On the whole, the movie was very exciting and interesting watch. The one can enjoy the Sharpe dialogues from Nana Patekar ji and the cool one from Raaj Kumar Sahab. The pacing of the story is nice and it was a delight to watch Rakesh Bedi's informant role, Even though the film seems to be outdated. The heroine in this movie didn't get to do much again I am gonna blame it on the 90's but it you would a difficult task for them when they are sharing screens with powerhouses like Nana Patekarji and Raaj Kumar Saheb.
I am
And I am afraid that what Gundaswamy has said if true.
बर्बादी बर्बादी बर्बादी, जिसे देस में ऊपर से नीचे तक लोग अपने स्वार्थ के लिए जी रहे हो, उस देस का भविस्य बर्बादी के सिव क्या हो सकता है? (What a Loss!!What a Loss!!What a Loss!! In a state where everyone in the system from top to bottom is leading a selfish life, What else can you expect the future of such state to be, but a loss.)
If you like my review, Please upvote and comment which movie should I review next.
PS - This is my personal view of the Movie "Tirangaa", And it is to be taken lightly. All the comments that I made were on the performance of these actors and not the actor themselves. Do not treat my word of a word of an expert. Trust me I am no expert
