Para muchos las pasiones son la sal de la vida, sin ellas la existencia se torna aburrida e insípida. Sin embargo, atender el llamado pasional puede descolocar a cualquiera y difuminar los tenues límites existentes entre realidad y fantasía.

El director y guionista argentino Armando Bo, quien ganó el Oscar 2015 por su guión de la excelente película Birdman, nos deja en “El Último Elvis” (2012), la conmovedora historia de un hombre que atendió el impulso pasional a costa de cualquier límite.

Carlos Gutiérrez (John McInerny), es un argentino que trabaja ensamblando computadoras recicladas, ha fracasado en su matrimonio y tiene una relación muy fría con su hija preadolescente Lisa Marie (Margarita López).

Paralelo a su trabajo de ensamblador desarrolla una actividad nocturna, haciendo excelentes imitaciones de su ídolo “Elvis Presley”. Ser el doble de Elvis es la gran pasión que mueve a Carlos en la vida.

El trabajo de imitador lo hace en sitios de mala muerte como bares, casinos, fiestas privadas y hasta en ancianatos, esto deja en Carlos cierta insatisfacción puesto que le gustaría estar en locaciones de mayor categoría; en realidad se lo merece, tiene el talento y sus presentaciones son muy buenas.

La identificación de Carlos con Elvis es total, al punto que en su barrio nadie lo conoce por su nombre de pila. Todos, desde las prostitutas hasta los vendedores de las tiendas, se dirigen a él usando el nombre artístico.

La obsesión de Carlos es tan grande que en ningún momento abandona el personaje; a las ancianas les firma autógrafos como si fuera el cantante, al que le pregunta su nombre le responde: Elvis, siempre anda trajeado al estilo de él. En su casa solo ve viejos videos y presentaciones de su ídolo, lo que le ha permitido copiar a la perfección los gestos y el tono de voz de la famosa leyenda del Rock. Carlos está convencido que es una especie de encarnación del mítico cantante.

Entre los planes de Carlos está el hacer una gira definitiva, para ello necesita reunir una buena cantidad de dólares, con esa finalidad decide entonces renunciar a su trabajo y buscar más presentaciones nocturnas. Pero un accidente de automóvil compromete seriamente la salud de la que todavía es su esposa, Alejandra (Griselda Siciliani), a quien llama “Priscilla”, debe entonces hacerse cargo de su hija.

Esa forzada temporada juntos va a estrechar las relaciones entre el padre y la hija, pero al mismo tiempo la niña va ser testigo de los altibajos en el estado de ánimo del padre. A pesar de que Carlos trata de presentarse como una persona controlada, la verdad es que algo no anda bien con él, la insatisfacción va minando paso a paso su cordura.

Por fortuna para todos Alejandra-Priscilla logra recuperarse y Lisa Marie vuelve con su madre. Carlos regresa a la monotonía de su vida solitaria. Ya sin ataduras familiares decide entonces continuar con su plan de hacer la famosa gira definitiva. Pone en venta todo lo que tiene, su vehículo el mobiliario de su casa y sus bienes personales.

Se dispone a viajar a los Estados Unidos, específicamente a la ciudad de Memphis, donde Elvis Presley vivió hasta su muerte a la edad de cuarenta y dos años. Carlos iniciará en Memphis la gran gira de su vida, entregándose de lleno a una pasión sin límites...

La película tiene un poco de todo, a ratos es comedia, otros musical, pero en el fondo me pareció profundamente dramática.

Todo el peso de la trama descansa en un único personaje, Carlos, retratado por el Director como una personalidad compleja y sugerente. Aparentemente pudiera pasar por una persona normal, tiene un trabajo, amigos, emprende iniciativas, vive independiente. Pero por otra parte ha sido inmaduro para enfrentar la paternidad; su esposa le reclama que una hija necesita algo más “que un padre que le cante cancioncitas”, y esa falta de compromiso ha sido el causante de su fracaso matrimonial. Pero esto es algo común a mucha gente, el matrimonio no es una empresa fácil, muchos fracasan en él. Nadie es perfecto.

Sin embargo, si hay en Carlos algo distinto, poco común, se cree otra persona, eso está claro. Está convencido que “Dios le ha dejado un don, le puso su voz…”, por eso es Elvis Presley. Carlos vive un estado de disolución progresiva de su personalidad, en su mente hace mucho tiempo que solo habita la persona de Elvis.

En la película no hay nada que explique cómo llegó Carlos a esa situación, ni por qué eligió ese extraño camino de ser otro, no se adelanta ninguna hipótesis, solo nos presentan las consecuencias. En este sentido cualquier explicación puede ser válida.

¿Acaso Carlos solo es un gran apasionado consecuente con sus creencias, o un trastornado mental? El dice lo siguiente: “cuando crees mucho en algo lo tienes que seguir hasta el final”, esto pudiera decirlo cualquier persona apasionada y aparentemente no hay en ello nada extraño. Sin embargo, “seguir hasta el final” pudiera significar abrir la caja de Pandora ¿La pasión en sí misma siempre es indicio de enajenación? ¿Acaso la enfermedad mental no es sino una pasión desbocada?

Pudiera pensarse también que Carlos solo es una más de tantas personas deprimidas incapaz de lidiar con las circunstancias de la vida, quizá la depresión lo ha llevado a ese estado de delirio que lo ha colocado al borde del abismo. Una personalidad débil que encontró alivio al subsumirse en la personalidad de un ídolo.

Sea como sea Carlos es de esos personajes que siempre da mucho que pensar y que se quedan dando vueltas en la cabeza del espectador; quizá porque nos parece muy cercano, como cualquiera de los que andan compartiendo el día a día y que llevan la procesión por dentro. El director lo ha presentado de forma ponderada no es un malvado pero tampoco una víctima de algo o de alguien.

Carlos al igual que todos los personajes de la película pertenecen a una clase social empobrecida de Argentina, con pocas expectativas de futuro, ese sería el gran telón de fondo sobre el que se desarrolla el drama del personaje. En este sentido la película también es de crítica social, pero no hay indicios de alguna relación directa entre ese contexto y la personalidad delirante del protagonista.

Desde el punto de vista técnico la película está muy bien trabajada. El director saca mucho provecho a las nuevas tecnologías de estabilización de la imagen para usar la cámara de un modo muy subjetivo. La paleta de colores destaca el conflicto mental de Carlos. La escenografía está muy bien lograda.

Un asunto que me gustó mucho fue la música. John McInerny, en la vida real es el mejor imitador de Elvis Presley que hay en Argentina. A ratos lo escuchaba casi igual que a Elvis, en verdad que sus interpretaciones musicales son magistrales. Con esta película se estreno como actor de cine y me pareció que lo hace bastante bien.

El Último Elvis es una película que recomiendo, una muestra de buen cine proveniente de la región sudamericana.

For many, passions are the spice of life, without them existence becomes dull and insipid. However, heeding the call of passion can unsettle anyone and blur the tenuous boundaries between reality and fantasy.

The Argentine director and screenwriter Armando Bo, who won the 2015 Oscar for his screenplay for the excellent film Birdman, leaves us in "The Last Elvis" (2012), the touching story of a man who heeded the passionate impulse at the cost of any limit.

Carlos Gutiérrez (John McInerny), is an Argentinean who works assembling recycled computers, has failed in his marriage and has a very cold relationship with his preteen daughter Lisa Marie (Margarita López).

Parallel to his work as an assembler, he develops a night activity, doing excellent imitations of his idol "Elvis Presley". Being the double of Elvis is the great passion that moves Carlos in life.

The impersonator's work is done in places like bars, casinos, private parties and even in old people's homes, this leaves Carlos with a certain dissatisfaction since he would like to be in higher category locations; in reality he deserves it, he has the talent and his presentations are very good.

Carlos' identification with Elvis is total, to the point that no one in his neighborhood knows him by his first name. Everyone, from the prostitutes to the store clerks, addresses him by his stage name.

Carlos' obsession is so great that he never abandons the character; he signs autographs for old ladies as if he were the singer, and answers anyone who asks him his name: Elvis, always dressed in his style. At home he only watches old videos and presentations of his idol, which has allowed him to perfectly copy the gestures and tone of voice of the famous Rock legend. Carlos is convinced that he is a sort of incarnation of the mythical singer.

Among Carlos' plans is to make a definitive tour, for this he needs to collect a good amount of dollars, with that purpose he decides then to quit his job and look for more night performances. But a car accident seriously compromises the health of his wife, Alejandra (Griselda Siciliani), whom he calls "Priscilla", and he has to take care of his daughter.

This forced stay together will strengthen the relationship between father and daughter, but at the same time the girl will witness the ups and downs in the father's mood. Although Carlos tries to present himself as a controlled person, the truth is that something is not right with him, the dissatisfaction is undermining step by step his sanity.

Fortunately for everyone, Alejandra-Priscilla manages to recover and Lisa Marie returns to her mother. Carlos returns to the monotony of his solitary life. Now without family ties, he decides to continue with his plan to make the famous definitive tour. He sells everything he owns, his car, the furniture in his house and his personal belongings.

He sets out to travel to the United States, specifically to the city of Memphis, where Elvis Presley lived until his death at the age of forty-two. Carlos will start in Memphis the grand tour of his life, giving himself fully to a passion without limits...

The film has a little bit of everything, at times it is a comedy, at others a musical, but in the end I found it deeply dramatic.

All the weight of the plot rests on a single character, Carlos, portrayed by the director as a complex and suggestive personality. Apparently he could pass for a normal person, he has a job, friends, takes initiatives, lives independently. But on the other hand, he has been immature to face fatherhood; his wife claims that a daughter needs something more "than a father who sings her little songs", and this lack of commitment has been the cause of his marital failure. But this is something common to many people, marriage is not an easy enterprise, many fail in it. Nobody is perfect.

However, if there is something different, uncommon in Carlos, he thinks he is another person, that is clear. He is convinced that "God has left him a gift, he gave him his voice...", that's why he is Elvis Presley. Carlos lives in a state of progressive dissolution of his personality, in his mind for a long time only the person of Elvis has been living.

In the film there is nothing to explain how Carlos reached this situation, nor why he chose this strange path of being someone else, no hypothesis is advanced, we are only presented with the consequences. In this sense, any explanation can be valid.

Is Carlos just a great passionate person, consistent with his beliefs, or is he mentally deranged? He says the following: "when you believe a lot in something you have to follow it to the end", this could be said by any passionate person and apparently there is nothing strange in it. However, "follow through to the end" could mean opening Pandora's box. Is passion in itself always an indication of alienation? Is mental illness nothing more than unbridled passion?

It could also be thought that Carlos is just one of many depressed people unable to cope with the circumstances of life, perhaps depression has led him to this state of delirium that has placed him on the edge of the abyss. A weak personality that found relief by subsuming himself in the personality of an idol.

Be that as it may, Carlos is one of those characters that always gives a lot to think about and that remain in the spectator's head; perhaps because he seems very close to us, like any of those who share his daily life and who carry the procession inside. The director has presented him in a balanced way, he is not an evil one, but neither is he a victim of something or someone.

Carlos, like all the characters in the film, belongs to an impoverished social class in Argentina, with few expectations for the future; this is the great backdrop against which the character's drama unfolds. In this sense the film is also socially critical, but there is no indication of any direct relationship between this context and the delirious personality of the protagonist.

From a technical point of view, the film is very well crafted. The director takes great advantage of the new image stabilization technologies to use the camera in a very subjective way. The color palette highlights Carlos' mental conflict. The set design is very well done.

One thing I really liked was the music. John McInerny, in real life, is the best Elvis Presley impersonator in Argentina. At times I listened to him almost like Elvis, his musical interpretations are truly masterful. With this film he made his debut as a film actor and I thought he did it quite well.

The Last Elvis is a film that I recommend, a sample of good cinema from the South American region.
