La suspensión de la moral: El Tigre Blanco | The suspension of morality: The White Tiger [ESP/ENG]

El director estadounidense Ramin Bahrani, nos presenta en el “Tigre Blanco” (2021), una película dura —sin ningún tipo de concesiones a lo políticamente correcto— sobre el drama de la desigualdad en el mundo de hoy.

En esta oportunidad Bahreín adapta el libro homónimo del periodista de ascendencia hindú Aravind Adiga, publicado en 2008, sobre el ascenso social de un joven emprendedor de la India.

Ya Bahreín, había probado suerte con otra adaptación de una novela famosa basada en el inmortal libro de Ray Bradbury; la película Farenheit 451, hecha para la cadena HBO.

American director Ramin Bahrani, presents us with "The White Tiger" (2021), a tough film -without any concessions to political correctness- about the drama of inequality in today's world.

This time Bahrain adapts the eponymous book by journalist of Indian descent Aravind Adiga, published in 2008, about the social rise of a young Indian entrepreneur.

Bahrain had already tried its luck with another adaptation of a famous novel based on Ray Bradbury's immortal book; the movie Farenheit 451, made for the HBO network.

Para la mayoría de los occidentales la sociedad hindú conserva cierto halo de misterio, es un mundo complejo donde conviven tradiciones ancestrales con los últimos avances de la tecnología.

En esa sociedad la presencia de las castas sigue siendo una camisa de fuerza para el ascenso social. La gran mayoría no tiene ninguna posibilidad de ir más allá de su casta de origen, el nacimiento marca el destino de las personas.

For most Westerners, Hindu society retains a certain aura of mystery; it is a complex world where ancestral traditions coexist with the latest advances in technology.

In this society, the presence of caste is still a straitjacket for social advancement. The vast majority have no possibility of going beyond their caste of origin, birth marks the destiny of people.

La película comienza presentándonos un exitoso hombre de negocios, Balram Halwai (Adarsh Gourav), ataviado muy al estilo occidental, escribiendo un email al representante de negocios de la República China; la intención del correo es convencer al diplomático sobre lo conveniente de hacer negocios con los hindúes, puesto que el mundo moderno está siendo testigo del declive del hombre blanco, y del ascenso de los amarillos (chinos) y marrones (hindúes).

Esa escena inicial sirve como punto de partida para hacer un gran flashback a la historia de vida de Balram, desde sus orígenes en la humilde aldea de Laxmangarh hasta la lujosa oficina del Silicon Valley de la India, en la ciudad de Bangalore.

The film begins by introducing us to a successful businessman, Balram Halwai (Adarsh Gourav), dressed very much in Western style, writing an email to the business representative of the Chinese republic; the intention of the email is to convince the Chinese representative of the wisdom of doing business with Hindus, as the modern world is witnessing the decline of the white man, and the rise of the yellow (Chinese) and brown (Hindus).

That opening scene serves as the starting point for a great flashback to Balram's life story, from his origins in the humble village of Laxmangarh to the plush office of India's Silicon Valley, in the city of Bangalore.

El ascenso del joven Balram comienza al destacarse en el aprendizaje de la lectura, en ese momento su maestro lo califica como un “tigre blanco”, una rara especie que se distingue en el contexto de la mayoría. Sus méritos lo hacen merecedor de una beca, pero sus ansias de ascenso se ven frustradas al imponerse el criterio de su abuela paterna, quien lo obliga a continuar en el trabajo familiar. La matrona ejerce su poder con dureza sobre todos los integrantes de la familia, es ella quien decide el destino de cada uno.

Young Balram's rise begins when he excels at learning to read, at which point his teacher labels him a "white tiger," a rare species that stands out in the context of the majority. His merits make him worthy of a scholarship, but his desire for promotion is frustrated when his maternal grandmother imposes her criteria, forcing him to continue in the family job. The matron exercises her power with harshness over all the members of the family, she is the one who decides the fate of each one.

Sin embargo, Balram, utiliza su habilidad e ingenio para convertirse en chofer del hijo del jefe de la mafia que exprime a su pueblo, Ashok, un muchacho refinado, con nuevas ideas obtenidas en su pasantía como estudiante de diferentes universidades estadounidenses. Es en el contacto con este joven tecnócrata cuando realmente comienza el ascenso de Balram a la cima.

Desde su condición de chofer, el joven pueblerino es testigo privilegiado de todas las intrigas tejidas entre las mafias y los políticos. Un maridaje que se sostiene a fuerza de corrupción, donde la ética es letra muerta y las personas solo son objetos utilizados a conveniencia.

However, Balram, uses his ability and ingenuity to become the driver of the son of the mafia boss who squeezes his village, Ashok, a refined boy, with new ideas obtained in his internship as a student of different American universities. It is in contact with this young technocrat that Balram's rise to the top really begins.

As a chauffeur, the young country boy is a privileged witness to all the intrigues woven between the mafias and the politicians. A marriage that is sustained by corruption, where ethics is a dead letter and people are just objects used for convenience.

Paso a paso Balram se va convenciendo de la inutilidad de los códigos morales, lo realmente relevante es dejar atrás la miseria que lo ha acompañado toda su vida. Su condición de víctima le ofrece la excusa perfecta para llegar incluso al asesinato.Todas las acciones están justificadas para hacerle trampas a un sistema que ha hecho de la manipulación su razón de ser.

Step by step Balram is convinced that moral codes have no meaning, the only thing that matters is to overcome the misery in which he has lived since he came into the world. His condition as a victim offers him the perfect excuse to go as far as murder. All actions are justified to cheat a system that has made manipulation its raison d'être.

El “Tigre Blanco” es una película valiente, de esas que no abundan en el cine contemporáneo y que buscan combinar reflexión con entretenimiento. Son muchos los temas que toca Bahreín en este film, el choque intercultural, las debilidades de la Democracia, el peso de los patrones culturales y de las creencias en la vida de las personas, el poder de las elecciones personales.

Desde el punto de vista cinematográfico la película está muy bien lograda, tiene excelentes actuaciones, un guión bien estructurado, una narrativa que no pierde el hilo en ningún momento de su larga duración y una fotografía de lujo. Un film que recomiendo.

The "White Tiger" is a brave film, one of those that do not abound in contemporary cinema and that seeks to combine reflection with entertainment. There are many themes that Bahrain touches on in this film, the intercultural clash, the weaknesses of Democracy, the weight of cultural patterns and beliefs in people's lives, the power of personal choices.

From the cinematographic point of view the film is very well done, it has excellent performances, a well structured script, a narrative that does not lose the thread at any moment of its long duration and a luxurious photography. A film that I recommend.

A mí la película me dejó un regusto amargo. Soy de los que alberga la esperanza en que los caminos de la ética y la moral nos puedan llevar a un mundo más armónico. Quizá soy ingenuo…Puede ser…

The film left me with a bitter aftertaste. I am one of those who hope that the paths of ethics and morality can lead us to a more harmonious world. Maybe I'm naive...Maybe....
