Nightmare Alley | Review | Reseña | Ambiciones desbordadas [ESP/ENG]

Mi primer acercamiento al cine de Guillermo del Toro fue con la película Hellboy (2004), en ese momento me llamó la atención la fuerza de su propuesta visual, en la que se podía disfrutar de ambientaciones muy bien logradas y originales. Luego le seguí la pista con “El Laberinto Del Fauno” (20006) una extraordinaria película donde el mexicano se mantenía fiel a su exploración de personajes oscuros, mezclando con mucha habilidad realidad y fantasía. La última que vi de este gran Cineasta fue “La Forma Del Agua” (2017), una película que me gustó mucho por el tratamiento que le da al tema de los que son diferentes.

Por eso cuando me enteré que había una nueva película “Nightmare Alley” (2021) tuve muchos deseos de ver con qué nos sorprendía ahora el señor Del Toro. Hace pocos días al fin pude encontrar una versión decente y la verdad es que he disfrutado con este film…

Stanton Carlisle (Bradley Cooper), es un hombre con un pasado oscuro. Debido a sus últimas acciones ha tenido que abandonar la ciudad donde ha vivido, convirtiéndose en un fugitivo. En un alto del camino se encuentra con un circo ambulante y decide explorar un poco el ambiente.

El primer espectáculo que encuentra es el de un pobre miserable que come gallinas vivas, el dueño del circo lo ha bautizado con el nombre del “fenómeno”. A Stanton aquella presentación le parece grotesca, de mal gusto, y abandona el sitio sin cancelar su entrada, pero el dueño, Clem (Willem Dafoe), le ha pillado.

Sin embargo, hay algo que llama la atención de Clem, se da cuenta que Stanton es un hombre en apuros, con problemas. El candidato ideal para trabajar fuerte y duro por una mala paga. Le va a ser fácil convencerlo de que el circo es un buen lugar para él, donde nadie está interesado en conocer ni el pasado ni los secretos de nadie.

Los primeros que entablan amistad con Stanton, son Zeena (Toni Collette), una especie de pitonisa que lee el futuro en el Tarot y su esposo Pete (David Strathairn), un anciano alcohólico, que fue un buen mago en los viejos tiempos, y quien tiene un excelente sistema para engañar al público creándole la ilusión de que es posible leer la mente de las personas.

Pete se encarga de preparar a Stanton en el arte de simular la lectura de la mente, para lo que es indispensable tener una buena capacidad de observación y una mente analítica y deductiva, requisitos que reúne el fugitivo recién llegado.

Entre los tantos personajes que hacen vida en el circo está Molly (Rooney Mara), una chica que hace un número donde pasa electricidad a través de su cuerpo; es una muchacha que ha quedado huérfana y está al cuidado de Bruno (Ron Perlman), un forzudo en decadencia, pero que todavía es capaz de derribar a cualquiera de un solo golpe. Entre Molly y Stanton se crea cierta química, y ambos tomarán la decisión de abandonar el circo y probar suerte por sí mismos.

En su nuevo destino la pareja logra alcanzar el éxito, ambos llevan un buen espectáculo. Su fama como mentalistas, capaces de leer la mente de cualquier persona, se ha extendido por muchos sitios. Van de ciudad en ciudad dejando al público deslumbrado.

Al final deciden ir a la gran ciudad de Nueva York, allí continúan los éxitos. En uno de sus espectáculos, presentados en la Gran Manzana, se topan con Lilith Ritter (Cate Blanchett), una respetada psicóloga quien tiene entre sus clientes a personajes del mundo de la política y hasta del bajo mundo. La mujer decide desenmascararlos y hacerlos pasar como unos farsantes, pero en esa oportunidad Stanton la supera en habilidades y logra mantener intacta su reputación. Sin embargo, esa pequeña afrenta no va a ser olvidada por la psicóloga.

Luego de ese episodio se va a establecer una relación entre la psicóloga y el mentalista, y la habilidosa mujer va a convencer a Stanton para hacer actos de espiritismo con dos personajes importantes de la sociedad neoyorquina, un juez y un rico millonario especializado en negocios turbios y peligrosos. Ambos personajes son de cuidado. De esos que pueden tomar fuertes represalias si se sienten engañados. La promesa de grandes ingresos va a ser el estímulo para esta arriesgada apuesta

Pero Molly no está de acuerdo con incursionar en nada que tenga que ver con espiritismo y menos sabiendo que se trata de engaños. Ella está conforme con lo que han logrado hasta ese momento. Tienen una fama ganada y buenos ingresos para vivir bien. Sin embargo la codicia desmedida de Stanton va a llevar a la pareja por caminos desconocidos…

Lo primero es decir que la película es un deleite visual. La ambientación y los decorados nos trasladan a esos mundos maravillosos producidos por la brillante mente de Del Toro. El cineasta es fiel a una estética cuidadosamente trabajada, donde las atmósferas funcionan muy bien para lograr estimular la emocionalidad del espectador.

En este caso hay un predominio de los colores oscuros, azulados y verdosos para enfatizar el dramatismo de las vidas de ese repertorio de personajes sombríos. En ciertos momentos la estética de la película me recordaba al Batman de Tim Burton.

Uno de los grandes temas de la película es el de la codicia, ese impulso que lleva a las personas a querer siempre más, a no estar nunca conformes, un deseo desmedido de posesión material que puede traer consecuencias desastrosas. Tres personajes del film sufren de ese mal.

En Stanton es donde el director enfatiza los efectos de la codicia. Este personaje principal es el clásico antihéroe, que no vacilará en ningún momento en echar mano a cualquier recurso con tal de lograr sus fines. Desde los primeros momentos se manifiesta como un ser inconforme con un fuerte deseo para llegar al máximo posible, sin límites en su obsesión de querer más y más.

Otro personaje codicioso es Clen, el dueño del circo, un experto en manipular a la gente, un ser sin escrúpulos que no respeta ningún código moral. El director de la película es muy acertado en poner a esta galería de personajes oscuros en un ambiente como el circo, que en aquellos años servía no solo para la diversión sino también para desarrollar actividades ilícitas de cualquier tipo.

La otra gran codiciosa es Lilith, la Psicóloga, una mujer muy inteligente que usa su profundo conocimiento de la mente humana para controlar a la gente y tenerlas a su disposición para obtener beneficios cuando ella lo considere conveniente.

En un primer momento se pudiera pensar que en la película hay una toma de posición en contra de la codicia. Y quizá más de uno llegue a esa conclusión. Es verdad que a Stanton no le va nada bien con su actitud de querer más y más, y pagará las consecuencias de su ambición. Pero no pasa igual con Clen ni con Lilith. A estos personajes el guion les permite continuar con su vida de trampas, manipulaciones y engaños. ¿Por qué castigó a uno y a otros no? Quizá algún otro espectador más acucioso que yo pueda tener respuestas a esa duda que me surge.

Pero no todo es oscuridad en esta versión del mundo del circo que nos trae Del Toro. Allí también hay espacios para sentimientos nobles como el compromiso, la solidaridad y el amor. Bruno, por ejemplo, es un tipo duro que se toma muy enserio su papel de padre putativo de Molly. Al morir el padre de la muchacha Bruno se comprometió a que la cuidaría y trata de honrar su compromiso de la mejor forma posible. Molly, por su parte, buscará en sus amigos del circo el amor necesario para continuar adelante cuando las cosas fallen.

La película tiene como dos grandes momentos, una primera parte que para algunos pudiera parecer lenta, puesto que no hay casi acción ni se definen grandes conflictos. A mí sí me gustó. En toda esa primera parte se presenta minuciosamente el mundo del circo tal como lo ha imaginado el director. Creo que el tiempo dedicado a esa parte era necesario para contextualizar lo que viene después.

La segunda parte es donde se definen los conflictos, la trama toma un mayor ritmo con una acción que no para de crecer hasta el momento del desenlace. Esta segunda parte está desarrollada al estilo de algunos thrillers.

Otro punto fuerte además de la excelente ambientación son las actuaciones. Destacando por mucho las de Bradley Cooper y Cate Blanchett.

El primero logra desarrollar un personaje muy complejo que se mueve en un mundo de indecisiones e inseguridades, que aparenta una gran frialdad para hacer sus engaños pero que a la vez es susceptible y sensible. Un tipo que no logra encontrar un asidero que le permita hacer un alto. Esta caracterización me pareció muy bien lograda.

Cate Blanchet hace muy bien su papel de Femme Fatale, fría, calculadora, despiadada, consciente plenamente de su poder para manipular a la gente. A los que les gusta el cine negro, seguramente que este personaje le vas a resultar familiar.

Otro que vi muy bien fue a Willem Dafoe, parece que se ha encariñado mucho con esos papeles de tipo malo que le han dado en varios films, y la verdad es que sabe darle vida a esos personajes. Aquí nos mete en la piel de un hombre despreciable que solo piensa en mantener su negocio adelante. Es un ser pragmático que no respeta ninguna norma moral con tal de mantener el espectáculo en marcha.

La película me gustó mucho, tiene algo importante para mí que son las ambientaciones, acá son impecables. Uno se traslada a ese momento de los años previos a la segunda guerra mundial, una época dura en los Estados Unidos. Además la historia es interesante, tiene su buena dosis de tensión y nos permite hacer unas cuantas reflexiones.

Si les gusta el cine de Guillermo del Toro puede ser que la película les agrade. Se las recomiendo. Si no conocen a este gran realizador esta es una buena oportunidad de iniciarse en su filmografía.

My first approach to Guillermo del Toro's cinema was with the film Hellboy (2004), at that time I was struck by the strength of his visual proposal, in which you could enjoy very well achieved and original settings. Then I followed his lead with "El Laberinto Del Fauno" (20006), an extraordinary film where the Mexican filmmaker remained faithful to his exploration of dark characters, skillfully mixing reality and fantasy. The last one I saw of this great Filmmaker was "The Shape Of Water" (2017), a film that I liked very much for its treatment of the theme of those who are different.

That's why when I heard that there was a new film "Nightmare Alley" (2021) I was eager to see what Mr. Del Toro would surprise us with now. A few days ago I was finally able to find a decent version and the truth is that I have enjoyed this film...

Stanton Carlisle (Bradley Cooper), is a man with a dark past. Due to his last actions he has had to leave the city where he has lived, becoming a fugitive. At a stop along the way he comes across a traveling circus and decides to explore the atmosphere a bit.

The first show he encounters is that of a poor wretch who eats live chickens; the circus owner has christened him the "freak". Stanton finds the presentation grotesque, in bad taste, and leaves the place without canceling his ticket, but the owner, Clem (Willem Dafoe), has caught him.

However, there is something that catches Clem's attention, he realizes that Stanton is a man in trouble, in trouble. The ideal candidate to work hard and tough for poor pay. It will be easy to convince him that the circus is a good place for him, where no one is interested in knowing anyone's past or secrets.

The first to befriend Stanton are Zeena (Toni Collette), a kind of fortune teller who reads the future in the Tarot and her husband Pete (David Strathairn), an old alcoholic, who was a good magician in the old days, and who has an excellent system to deceive the public by creating the illusion that it is possible to read people's minds.

Pete is in charge of training Stanton in the art of simulating mind reading, for which it is indispensable to have a good observation capacity and an analytical and deductive mind, requirements that the recently arrived fugitive meets.

Among the many characters that make life in the circus is Molly (Rooney Mara), a girl who does a number where electricity passes through her body; she is a girl who has been orphaned and is in the care of Bruno (Ron Perlman), a strongman in decline, but is still able to knock down anyone with a single blow. A certain chemistry develops between Molly and Stanton, and both make the decision to leave the circus and try their luck on their own.

In their new destination the couple manages to achieve success, both running a good show. Their fame as mentalists, able to read anyone's mind, has spread to many places. They go from city to city leaving the public dazzled.

Finally they decide to go to the big city of New York, where their success continues. In one of their shows, presented in the Big Apple, they run into Lilith Ritter (Cate Blanchett), a respected psychologist who has among her clients characters from the world of politics and even the underworld. The woman decides to unmask them and pass them off as phonies, but Stanton surpasses her in skills and manages to keep his reputation intact. However, that little affront will not be forgotten by the psychologist.

After that episode, a relationship is established between the psychologist and the mentalist, and the skillful woman convinces Stanton to perform acts of spiritualism with two important characters of New York society, a judge and a rich millionaire specialized in shady and dangerous business. Both characters are very dangerous. Of those who can take strong reprisals if they feel deceived. The promise of great income will be the stimulus for this risky bet.

But Molly does not agree with dabbling in anything that has to do with spiritualism and less knowing that it is about deception. She is satisfied with what they have achieved so far. They have earned fame and a good income to live well. However, Stanton's excessive greed is going to lead the couple down unknown paths...

The first thing to say is that the film is a visual delight. The setting and the scenery transport us to those marvelous worlds produced by the brilliant mind of Del Toro. The filmmaker is faithful to a carefully crafted aesthetic, where the atmospheres work very well to stimulate the viewer's emotions.

In this case there is a predominance of dark, bluish and greenish colors to emphasize the drama of the lives of this repertoire of somber characters. At certain moments the aesthetics of the film reminded me of Tim Burton's Batman.

One of the major themes of the film is that of greed, that impulse that drives people to always want more, to never be satisfied, an inordinate desire for material possession that can lead to disastrous consequences. Three characters in the film suffer from this evil.

Stanton is where the director emphasizes the effects of greed. This main character is the classic anti-hero, who will not hesitate at any time to resort to any resource in order to achieve his ends. From the first moments he manifests himself as a nonconformist being with a strong desire to reach the maximum possible, with no limits in his obsession of wanting more and more.

Another greedy character is Clen, the circus owner, an expert in manipulating people, an unscrupulous being who does not respect any moral code. The director of the film is very successful in placing this gallery of dark characters in an environment such as the circus, which in those years served not only for entertainment but also to develop illicit activities of any kind.

The other great greedy one is Lilith, the Psychologist, a very intelligent woman who uses her deep knowledge of the human mind to control people and have them at her disposal to obtain benefits when she considers it convenient.

At first you might think that the film takes a stand against greed. And perhaps more than one would come to that conclusion. It is true that Stanton does not fare well with his attitude of wanting more and more, and he will pay the consequences of his ambition. But it's not the same with Clen or Lilith. These characters are allowed by the script to continue their lives of cheating, manipulation and deceit. Why did he punish one and not others? Perhaps some other viewer, more keen than me, may have answers to that doubt that arises in my mind.

But not everything is darkness in this version of the circus world brought to us by Del Toro. There are also spaces for noble feelings such as commitment, solidarity and love. Bruno, for example, is a tough guy who takes his role as Molly's putative father very seriously. When the girl's father died, Bruno pledged that he would take care of her and tries to honor his commitment in the best way possible. Molly, for her part, will look to her circus friends for the love she needs to carry on when things go wrong.

The film has about two big moments, a first part that for some might seem slow, since there is almost no action and no major conflicts are defined. I liked it. In all that first part, the circus world as the director has imagined it is presented in detail. I think the time dedicated to that part was necessary to contextualize what comes later.

The second part is where the conflicts are defined, the plot takes a greater pace with an action that does not stop growing until the moment of the denouement. This second part is developed in the style of some thrillers.

Another strong point in addition to the excellent setting are the performances. Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett stand out by far.

The first manages to develop a very complex character who moves in a world of indecision and insecurities, which appears a great coldness to make his deceptions but at the same time is susceptible and sensitive. A guy who is unable to find a handle that allows him to stop. I found this characterization very well done.

Cate Blanchet plays the femme fatale very well, cold, calculating, ruthless, fully aware of her power to manipulate people. Those who like film noir will surely find this character familiar.

Another that I saw very well was Willem Dafoe, it seems that he has become very fond of these bad guy roles that he has been given in several films, and the truth is that he knows how to give life to these characters. Here he puts us in the shoes of a despicable man who only thinks about keeping his business going. He is a pragmatic being who does not respect any moral standards in order to keep the show going.

I liked the film very much, it has something important for me which are the settings, here they are impeccable. One is transported to that time in the years before World War II, a hard time in the United States.

If you like Guillermo del Toro's films, you might like this movie. I recommend it. If you do not know this great director this is a good opportunity to get started in his filmography.
