In our time, school is one of the most important spaces for socialization. It is there that for the first time we begin to get to know the real world, the one beyond the doors of our homes. Sometimes the school experience can be very pleasant, we make friends, we play, we learn about many things, but it can also be the case that the school environment can turn out to be a nightmare.
Belgian filmmaker Laura Wandel, in "Un monde" (2021), her debut feature, leaves us with a disturbing film about that small world that constitutes the school space. This director focuses her gaze on the conflicts that occur in those school environments where children learn the good and bad things in life.
Nora is a girl about ten years old, beginning what seems to be a new school year, she attends classes accompanied by her brother Abel, two or three years older than her. At first glance, she gives the impression that Abel is her sister's guardian. For some reason not revealed in the film, the girl has a strong dislike for school. Her father practically has to force her to go because if it were up to her she would gladly stay at home.
In the first moments, Nora has a hard time adapting to school, she seems distracted, clumsy, distressed, helpless, with a great need to seek Abel's protection. On the contrary, the brother is very determined and self-confident. This difference between the two brothers becomes evident in the schoolyard, the place where the reality of the school world takes place, where children have to learn to be with themselves and with others.
But in a small twist of the plot suddenly Nora begins to socialize very well, makes good friends, progresses in school activities, and now she is the one who assumes the task of protecting the brother, since Abel has become the target of ridicule, offenses and aggressions of a trio of ruthless boys, whose main distraction is to hurt others.
The girl then begins to live a great conflict, she does not know what to do, whether to keep quiet or seek the help of an adult. Abel, in a display of bravery, threatens her "even to kill her" if she tells anyone what is happening to him.
The boy is going through an identity crisis because he thinks he is old enough to take care of his problems on his own, but in reality he is just a child. He feels very ashamed for being the victim, for not knowing how to defend himself from the cruel treatment he is subjected to by the trio of thugs. But Nora, breaking the promise of silence made to her brother, is going to tell everything, both to her father and to her teacher.
Nora's confession is very upsetting to her brother, who blames her for making everything worse for him because of her intervention, and thinks that now the gang will treat him worse.
However, after what the girl said, her father decides to take the complaint to the school authorities, who intervene and proceed to summon all those involved, parents and children, both the aggressors and the victim. In a sort of council where parents, teachers, authorities and children are present, the aggressors are forced to apologize, and are warned about the possibility of sanctions in case of recidivism. With these conciliatory measures, the problem was apparently solved.
However, the presence of a new Afro-descendant child, Ismael, who is also rejected by the group, will give the story another twist. At a certain point, Abel discovers Ismael's weakness, and begins to make him the target of his mockery. Step by step, Nora's brother undergoes a mutation that transforms him from a victim into an aggressor. Now Nora's conflict increases as she decides to advocate on Ismael's behalf, which inevitably leads her to condemn Abel's behavior.
Abel in his new role will give free rein to a very harmful aggressiveness to which his sister will have to face with a lot of determination...
The film is disturbing. It goes against our traditional image of the playground as the place where we have a good time with friends, where games, experiences and even school snacks are shared; recess in our imagination must be one of the best things we remember from our school days.
Therefore, to see on the screen that this pleasant place where children have fun and share, can be at the same time the place where they are exposed to psychological tensions and physical aggressions, leaves a lot of discomfort, at least that was my experience with the film. This playground that Ms. Wandel presents us with is very similar to the ones we see in prison movies.
One of the great successes of the film is the way it is told. The camera sees the world through the eyes of the children. It is masterful how a shoulder camera keeping tracking shots of the protagonists' backs is enough to immerse us in a state of anguish, because we know that those moving backs are inevitably heading towards a problem and from behind, from that space that the director reserved for us spectators, there is very little we can do to alert them, to save them...
The director has been very careful to explore the way in which children interpret reality, from their innocence and from the prejudices that they surely learn from the adult world. One of Nora's classmates tells her that she does not want to meet with her brother Abel. When Nora asks for an explanation, she answers with the sincerity of a child, that she does not like to be with him because he is a soccer player and all soccer players are racist. Nora does not know the meaning of the word and when she asks her what is racist, the other girl answers that soccer players are racist because they only think of themselves, not of others... It is obvious that the definition is at least incomplete, however, in this way we are building an idea of the world. If Nora has no one to clarify the meaning of the word, she will continue to multiply the error.
The film opens many conflicts that give food for thought. One may be how difficult it is to protect children in the school environment.
The film is shot in Belgium, one of the so-called advanced countries. The school it presents is what for many of us, in this part of the world, would be a model school. There the children develop artistic and recreational activities within their own class schedule. It has its own dining room, its own gymnasium, where the children are trained in the different apparatuses and disciplines of gymnastics, it has its own swimming pool where they are taught to swim, qualified and prepared teachers to adequately attend to the children, in short... the ideal for any school that wants to form well-prepared children.
But even in that beautiful ideal space, in that model school, the bad guys always find the time and the opportunity to get away with it, to stick a child's head in the well, or leave him locked in the garbage container, or bury him in the sand pool. There is always the possibility of dodging the watchful eyes of the teachers.
And it is not that the director wants to blame anyone. No, the film does not question the institution, nor the procedures, nor the performance of teachers. Aggressions and harassment are simply situations that can occur within the school, they happen, they escape surveillance. And it seems that the only thing that can be done about it is to prepare the child to denounce, so that he/she does not allow himself/herself to be intimidated and manipulated. Something that of course is not at all easy because the child stage is precisely one of great vulnerability.
One of the great merits of the film are the performances. The girl who plays the role of Nora (Maya Vanderbeque) has a great talent for the interpretation of characters, the truth is that if she continues that way she will surely become a great actress.
But all the credit goes not only to the girl, but also to the director of the film who has done a great job of acting direction. If with adult actors is difficult the work of direction to give them the necessary clues that allow them to develop the best interpretation, I can not imagine how it will be in the case of children, who tend to tire more, to be distracted. Undoubtedly, to have achieved such performances in that group of children must be the product of great dedication.
I liked the film a lot. It is not one of those that brighten up the day, or that can be watched when the mood is low. It is a film that shows a reality that can mark people's lives, bullying can have enough impact to divert many paths in life. And I think the director's intention in presenting us with a tough film like this is that we don't minimize a problem that can be serious for our children and grandchildren. Kids need to be paid attention to and not think that their issues are less complicated than ours. If you have school age children I recommend you give "Un monde." a viewing.
