"Rosaline" is a true Shakespeare refresher from the witty minds of Karen Maine and screenwriter Scott Neustadter.
It is a comedy retelling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, told from the point of view of Romeo's ex-girlfriend,
First, Kaitlyn Dever lights up the screen with her captivating performance as Rosaline, injecting new life into this well-told story through her wit and spirit.
Isabela Merced and Kyle Allen also have superb chemistry as the feuding lovers, and their dynamic helps us understand what Rosaline sees in Romeo.
But this film wisely makes Rosaline the agent of her own destiny rather than an outcast observer. We root for her as the sharp, bold heroine of her own comic romance.
The sharp dialogue and comic timing kept me smiling constantly throughout Maine's fast-paced direction.
The lavish costumes and sets effortlessly transport us to 16th century Verona, where romance and mayhem abound in the picturesque streets.
An absolute triumph that demonstrates how refreshing old stories can be when reinvented from a new perspective, where adaptations often play it safe, they imagined a celebration of a new feminist heroine while honouring the Bard's wit and language.
Highly recommended for anyone looking for a romantic comedy with brains, heart and plenty of laughs.
