Actor Eric Stoltz initially played Marty McFly during the filming of "Back to the Future" because Michael J. Fox was unavailable at the time.
Stoltz always considered himself a method actor, which is why he asked to be addressed as Marty throughout filming.
In fact, he would not respond if called by his real name.
Much has been rumored about Stoltz's personality on that shoot.
It has been said, for example, that he was not punctual.
Also, his portrayal of Marty was too intense.
And although the extra material that comes in the DVD and Bluray of the film does not provide great details, it is clear that the actor did not work in the role.
Neil Canton himself (one of the film's producers) went so far as to say:
"It gave the impression that Eric was in a different movie."
That is why, after 28 days of shooting, the decision was made to start again from scratch with another actor.
At that point, Bob Gale (producer and screenwriter of the film) thought it was time to insist again on the best candidate: Michael J. Fox.
Another fact is this
At first, Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale imagined that the time travel machine in "Back to the Future" would be a laser device that would be housed in a room.
Then it was envisioned that the machine would be built from an old refrigerator.
However, Steven Spielberg (the executive producer) warned that maybe kids would start locking themselves in refrigerators to mimic time travel, so they scrambled to find better ideas.
They finally came to the conclusion that it would make the most sense for the machine to be "mobile" so that it could be carried around.
After looking at a few options, they chose the "DMC DeLorean" because of its beautiful futuristic design that could be mistaken for a UFO or spaceship.
If you're going to travel back in time, do it in style.
