Sostiene Pereira, a gem of European auteur cinema

In his adaptation of Tabucchi's novel, Faenza crafts an intimate character study brimming with serene intensity.

Marcello Mastroianni gives the best performance of his career as an aging journalist reflecting on the rise of fascism.

Faenza's neorealist style invites us to take a close look at Pereira's turmoil, remorse and budding friendship with a rebellious young man.

Shot in 1940s Lisbon, the period details transport us fully.

Mastroianni exudes fragility and dignity, embracing complexities while his editorials take a bold stance.

Faenza never judges, but understands every wavering perspective at this murky turning point in history.

Supporting actors such as Cláudio Santamaria are wonderful, adding texture to a story told as much through pensive silences and the bustle of the city as words. Gloria Münster doubles poetically.

This gem of European auteur cinema struck a chord with me, making me reflect on the personal responsibilities and compromises faced under authoritarian regimes that are still relevant today.

A simply masterful neorealist narrative that immerses us in another life, place and time.

A lesser-known classic that deserves wider recognition for its timely themes of journalistic duty and the small battles within major historical events. Immensely moving.

It won Best Film and Best Actor (Mastroianni) at the 1995 David di Donatello awards in Italy, a testament to the appreciation of Italian film institutions.

Commercially, it performed respectably on the art-house circuit, especially in Latin markets, due to its Portuguese setting. But it was never going to be a box-office success.

The estimated worldwide box office was around $1 million, modest but profitable given its small budget of $4 million in 1994.
