There are so many things I want to say about this movie, and almost none of them are good, so I'm still going to say them, reviews don't necessarily have to be good, there are too many reviews around the world trashing movies that don't deserve it, and although this movie doesn't deserve it at all, I'm going to trash it, although not completely, my feeling and thinking about the movie is very weird and I will try to explain in this review as much as I can to try to understand myself.
The Northman has no secrets and says everything you need to know in any synopsis you read, even the trailer is the best summary of a movie that can exist, watching the trailer after watching the movie is to watch the movie again, asking myself the same questions, trying to understand something that escapes from my hands and I can't figure out what it is, I would have preferred to see the trailer before watching the movie and maybe then I wouldn't have seen it.
The story is going to revolve around Amleth, the Nordic version of Hamlet, because when he is about to become King, his uncle kills his father, kidnaps his mother, and although he wants to kill him too, Amleth manages to escape and swears to avenge his father, save his mother, and kill his uncle, a destiny that begins to be fulfilled 20 years later. Yeah, that's the whole movie, don't expect anything more and nothing less than that.
Hay tantas cosas que quiero decir sobre esta película, y casi ninguna es buena, por lo que igual las voy a decir, las reseñas no necesariamente tienen que ser buenas, hay demasiadas reseñas por el mundo destrozando películas que no lo merecen, y aunque esta película no se lo merece del todo, la voy a destrozar, aunque no por completo, mi sentir y pensar con respecto a la película es muy raro y trataré de explicar en esta reseña todo lo que pueda para así tratar de entenderme.
The Northman no tiene secretos y dice todo lo que se necesita saber en cualquier sinopsis que se lea, incluso el trailer es el mejor resumen de una película que pueda exitir, ver el trailer después de ver la película es volver a ver la película de nuevo, haciéndome las mismas preguntas, tratando de entender algo que se me escapa de las manos y no logro saber qué es, hubiera preferido ver el trailes antes de ver la película y quizás así no la hubiera visto.
La historia va a girar alrededor de Amleth, la versión nórdica de Hamlet, pues cuando está a punto de convertirse en Rey, su tío mata a su padre, secuestra a su madre, y aunque lo quiere matar también, Amleth logra escapar y jura vengar a su padre, salvar a su madre, y matar a su tío, destino que comienza a cumplirse 20 años después. Ya, esa es toda la película, no esperen nada más y nada menos que eso.
I have to give credit to the movie and that is that I didn't know what the fuck it was about before watching it, I only knew it was by Robert Eggers, that was more than enough to watch this movie and unfortunately I expected to love it like its predecessors, but no, I watched it and although I was sleepy I didn't fall asleep, that's a good thing, but when I finished it I laughed a lot, too much, and that did take my sleep away, which I am grateful for because later I watched X and I loved it completely.
Robert, what did they do with your movie? Thanks to JC I found out that the studio had the final word on the film and they were the ones who made the last cut to the film, taking away more than half an hour of the film, I think an hour, I don't remember that part, and the moment I found that out I liked the film a little bit more, and I stopped automatically blaming Robert for making the film like that because it wasn't his fault, it wasn't his intention, and we still love him despite this film.
The Northman is a commercial film, it is nothing more than that, a story that has already been told many times, in many ways, with more or fewer elements, but it is not a story that surprises, it is transparent from the beginning and we know what is going to happen, which leaves us with the expectation of seeing how the events are going to happen, but it still does not surprise us at the end, leaving us with more questions and the feeling of a stilted or deficient plot, there is no middle ground here.
Tengo que darle crédito en algo a la película y es que yo no sabía de qué carajos trataba antes de verla, yo solo sabía que era de Robert Eggers, eso era más que suficiente para ver esta película y lastimosamente esperar amarla desquiciadamente como a sus predecesoras, pero no, la vi y aunque tenía sueño no me dormí, eso es algo bueno, pero al terminarla me reí mucho, demasiado, y eso sí me quitó el sueño, cosa que agradezco porque después vi X y la amé por completo.
Robert, ¿qué hicieron con tu película? Gracias a JC me enteré de que el estudio tuvo la palabra final sobre la película y fueron quienes le hicieron el último corte a la película, quitándole más de media hora de película, creo que una hora, ya no recuerdo esa parte, y al momento de enterarme de eso la película me gustó un poquito más, y dejé de automaticamente culpar a Robert por haber hecho la película así, pues no fue su culpa, no fue su intención, y le seguimos amando a pesar de esta película.
The Northman es una película comercial, no es más que eso, una historia que ya se ha contado muchas veces, de muchas formas, con más o menos elementos, pero no es una historia que sorprende, es transparente desde un principio y sabemos qué es lo que va a suceder, cosa que si bien nos deja la expectativa de ver cómo van a suceder los eventos, sigue sin sorprendernos al final, dejándonos con más preguntas y la sensación de un argumento rebuscado o deficiente, no hay punto medio aquí.

The film is a complete visual orgasm, the work they did with the scenes, with the visual organization of the elements is impeccable, but as always happens, excellent cinematography is not always a sign of quality, although this film is, that does not mean that it will be liked and although they tried to make the film as commercial as possible, and although many people say that they idolize this film and it is at the same level of Robert's previous works, the reality is quite different.
There is something very specific that I didn't like about the movie and that was the pacing, I realized this halfway through the movie and then felt the pressure every time there was a general change between scenes, it was horrible to endure. One of the things that is expected or tried to be done in movies is that the transitions between scenes are as smooth as possible, but The Northman has one of the most marked and heavy transitions possible that I have seen, and it is not that it is visually or in the argumentative part, no, it is in the sound of the film, the transition is always marked by a loud drum sound or any sound that resembles it, not only making the scene change predictable, but it disturbs in some way the calm that you have when watching the movie.
Hubo un punto donde pensé, sentí, y dije en voz alta que la película era como un hombre extremadamente cishetero, y tuve razón, esa es otra de las razones por las que no me gustó tanto como las anteriores de Robert, porque sí, a pesar de que creo estar destruyendo la película aquí, me gustó la película, o mejor dicho, me gustaron ciertos aspectos de la película, mas no la película completa.
La película es un orgasmo visual por completo, el trabajo que hicieron con las escenas, con la organización visual de los elementos es impecable, pero como siempre pasa, un excelente trabajo de fotografía no siempre es signo de calidad, aunque esta película sí lo sea, pero eso no significa que va a gustar, y aunque intentaron que la película fuera lo más comercial posible, y aunque mucha gente sí dice que idolatra esta película y está al mismo nivel de los trabajos anteriores de Robert, la realidad es otra muy diferente.
Hay algo muy en específico que no me gustó de la película y fue el ritmo que tiene, me di cuenta a la mitad de la película y después sentía la presión cada vez que había un cambio general entre escenas, fue horrible de soportar. Una de las cosas que se espera o se intenta hacer en las películas es que las transiciones entre escenas sean lo más suaves posibles, pero The Northman tiene una de las transiciones más marcadas y pesadas posible que he visto, y no es que lo sea visualmente o en la parte argumentativa, no, es en el sonido de la película, la transición siempre está marcada por un sonido fuerte de tambor o cualquier sonido que se le asemeje, no solo haciendo predecible el cambio de escena, si no que perturba en cierta forma la calma que se tenga al ver la película.
