Yo se que ya estamos en el mes de noviembre y que por tanto la spooky season oficialmente ha terminado pero es que Halloween fue el día de ayer y para celebrarlo como se debe decidí ver una película que está llamada a ser de las grandes sorpresas en el cine del terror, una que tiene un relato bastante común pero que en su camino es una que sorprende mucho. Como siempre lo he comentado conseguir un film de terror que realmente valga la pena es casi una tarea imposible de lograr porque muchos de ellos caen en las mismas jugadas de siempre, en los clichés, cosa que no está del todo mal cuando el contexto ayuda y hay una buena trama o historia detrás.

I know that we are already in the month of November and therefore the spooky season is officially over but Halloween was yesterday and to celebrate it as it should I decided to see a film that is called to be one of the great surprises in horror cinema, one that has a fairly common story but in its way is one that surprises a lot. As I have always commented getting a horror film that is really worthwhile is almost an impossible task to achieve because many of them fall into the same old moves, into clichés, which is not all bad when the context helps and there is a good plot or story behind it.

Además tengo la costumbre, no se si al final me perjudica más que ayudarme, de leer un poco las criticas que se están haciendo de la película en cuestión, esto lo hago para saber a que me enfrento y que me voy a conseguir aunque también creo que es un poco de ansiedad, ver un film totalmente a ciegas es de las cosas que me cuesta mucho. Pero por que digo todo esto? - pues porque la critica y las reseñas que he visto por ahí la sitúan como una de las películas a la que más atención habría que prestarle de este año al punto que cuando salió estrenada en los cines la respuesta fue muy positiva. Comparto esta opinión? - en principio lo que les puedo decir es que este viaje sumamente retorcido y siniestro puede dejar incomodo a cualquiera. Pero bueno, sin más hablemos un poco de que va este peculiar titulo del terror.

I also have the habit, I don't know if in the end it hurts me more than helps me, to read a little bit the reviews that are being made of the film in question, I do this to know what I'm facing and what I'm going to get although I also think it's a bit of anxiety, watching a film totally blind is one of the things that costs me a lot. But why do I say all this? - Because the critics and reviews that I've seen out there place it as one of the films to which we should pay more attention this year to the point that when it was released in theaters the response was very positive. Do I share this opinion? - In principle what I can tell you is that this extremely twisted and sinister journey can make anyone uncomfortable. But well, without further ado, let's talk a little bit about this peculiar horror title.

Esta es una historia que comienza con Tess Marshall (Georgina Campbell), una joven que está de paso por la ciudad de Detroit ya que en los días venideros tiene una entrevista de trabajo. Al ser una turista decide rentar una casa para pasar un par de noches pero pronto se percata de que algo no va como se supone que debe de ir. Es un vecindario oscuro, solo y tétrico pero eso a Tess no le importó, solo lo que quería era dormir y pasar la noche lo más rápido posible. El asunto es que la casa ya estaba alquilada por otro inquilino, un tipo raro pero aparentemente amable, Keith Toshko (Bill Skarsgård) quien decide que Tess pernote en la casa y juntos encontrar una solución a aquello. Lo interesante y como ya lo dije es que todos los sentidos le decía a Tess que se fuera de allí pero ante la urgencia y el hecho de que era muy tarde decidió quedarse.

This is a story that begins with Tess Marshall (Georgina Campbell), a young woman who is passing through the city of Detroit as she has a job interview in the coming days. Being a tourist she decides to rent a house to spend a couple of nights but soon realizes that something is not going the way it is supposed to go. It's a dark, lonely and gloomy neighborhood but that didn't matter to Tess, she just wanted to get some sleep and get through the night as quickly as possible. The thing is that the house was already rented by another tenant, a weird but apparently nice guy, Keith Toshko (Bill Skarsgård) who decides that Tess pernotate in the house and together find a solution to that. What's interesting and as I already said is that every sense was telling Tess to get out of there but in the urgency and the fact that it was too late she decided to stay.

Y como muchas veces la intuición no falla, en este caso no fue la excepción. El ambiente era raro, pesado, algo que no se veía parecía estar rondando la casa, pronto esas sospechas comienzan a despejarse. Entrada la noche Tess se da cuenta que algo definitivamente está extraño en aquella pequeña casa y pronto notará que hay algo más a lo que tenerle miedo que al propio compañero que estaba durmiendo en el sofá. Es aquí cuando la película comienza a funcionar en modo terror, es cuando la trama y las situaciones se van poniendo cada vez más tensas e inexplicables y es cuando el ritmo empieza a acelerarse poco a poco. Esta es de esas películas que a primera vista no parecen impresionar mucho pero la verdad es que no es así, en lo personal fue una que disfruté bastante porque la considero un buen terror, uno decente con todos sus elementos bien marcados y elaborados.

And as intuition often fails, in this case it was no exception. The atmosphere was strange, heavy, something unseen seemed to be haunting the house, soon those suspicions begin to clear. Late at night Tess realizes that something is definitely strange in that small house and soon she notices that there is something more to be afraid of than just her sleeping partner on the couch. This is when the movie starts to go into horror mode, this is when the plot and situations get increasingly tense and inexplicable and this is when the pace starts to pick up little by little. This is one of those movies that at first glance do not seem to impress much but the truth is that it is not, personally it was one that I enjoyed quite a lot because I consider it a good horror, a decent one with all its elements well marked and elaborated.

Este film tiene una premisa que se va desarrollando a lo largo de la trama y es que cuanto menos sepas, mejor. Esto es porque de esta manera el viaje se hace más aterrador e inexplicable al punto que te puedes llegar a frustrar por las cosas que en ella pasan. Al principio es una historia como cualquier otra, muy suave y sencilla en donde se nos da un contexto de los personajes, el por qué están en donde están al punto de que la interacción se va convirtiendo cual si fuera una comedia romántica. Pero poco a poco todo se va oscureciendo y el ambiente se va llenando de dudas lo que hace que uno como espectador nos pongamos un poco a la defensiva porque quieres saber que pasa pero la película no avanza tan rápido, al contrario, va soltando pistas de a poco haciendo que la experiencia sea más siniestra.

This film has a premise that is developed throughout the plot and that is that the less you know, the better. This is because in this way the journey becomes more terrifying and inexplicable to the point that you can become frustrated by the things that happen in it. At first it is a story like any other, very smooth and simple where we are given a context of the characters, why they are where they are to the point that the interaction is becoming as if it were a romantic comedy. But little by little everything gets darker and the atmosphere is filled with doubts which makes you as a viewer a little defensive because you want to know what is going on but the film does not move forward so fast, on the contrary, it drops clues little by little making the experience more sinister.

Es complicado que no me aburra en un film de terror por lo dicho anteriormente, los clichés sin sentido pueden llegar a matar toda la vibra que quieren intentar crear pero es que con esta película no pasa eso, no porque esos elementos no existan acá por si los hay sino porque la historia en sí es tan extraña y la forma en que es contada es tan envolvente que todo eso se te olvida y al final terminas disfrutando el paseo. No me aburrí en ningún momento, el suspenso está siempre, desde el inicio hasta el final y está acompañado por una banda sonora muy acorde a todo, poco se habla de eso. Hay momentos en que lo que reina es el desconcierto, tienes la respuesta en la pantalla y aún así no asimilas lo que estás viendo, es esa la verdadera magia de este film.

It is difficult not to get bored in a horror film because of what I said before, the meaningless clichés can kill the whole vibe that they want to try to create but with this film that does not happen, not because those elements do not exist here but because the story itself is so strange and the way it is told is so involving that all that is forgotten and in the end you end up enjoying the ride. I was not bored at any time, the suspense is always there, from the beginning to the end and it is accompanied by a soundtrack very much in keeping with everything, little is said about that. There are moments when what reigns is bewilderment, you have the answer on the screen and yet you do not assimilate what you are seeing, that is the true magic of this film.

En cuanto a los personajes pues la verdad es que Georgina interpretando a Tess fue muy convincente, es un personaje que dentro de la película pasa por muchas emociones y traumas y cada uno de ellos los borda muy bien. Hay un pasaje en donde lo que reina es el miedo profundo y su actuación estuvo de diez y esto lo digo porque cuando logra transmitir el sentimiento a través de la pantalla se sabe que hay un buen trabajo. Por su parte Bill Skarsgård ya es alguien más veterano en este genero, a él lo vi en Castle Rock, una serie de un libro de Stephen King y ahí me di cuenta que está hecho para este tipo de papales. Al igual que en aquella serie acá hace de una persona que es un completo enigma, puede que te convenza de que todo está bien pero en el fondo no terminas de confiar, sinceramente es muy bue actor.

As for the characters, the truth is that Georgina playing Tess was very convincing, she is a character that in the film goes through many emotions and traumas and each of them she embroiders them very well. There is a passage where what reigns is deep fear and her performance was ten out of ten and I say this because when she manages to convey the feeling through the screen you know there is a good job. Bill Skarsgård is already a veteran in this genre, I saw him in Castle Rock, a series of a Stephen King book and there I realized that he is made for this type of roles. As in that series here he plays a person who is a complete enigma, he may convince you that everything is fine but deep down you do not end up trusting him, honestly he is a very good actor.

Hay un tercer personaje interpretado por Justin Long pero del que prefiero no dar pistas pero que sepan que al igual que los dos anteriores termina siendo una pieza clave en esta historia. Y es que esta película se divide en tres actos, tres momentos que al principio no parecen tener mucho sentido pero con el tiempo todo encaja, esto lo digo porque en cada uno hay personajes distintos pero se los dejo de sorpresa porque como les dije, mientras menos sepan, más disfrutarán del film.

There is a third character played by Justin Long but I prefer not to give clues but just know that like the previous two ends up being a key piece in this story. And is that this film is divided into three acts, three moments that at first do not seem to make much sense but eventually everything fits together, I say this because in each there are different characters but I leave them as a surprise because as I said, the less you know, the more you will enjoy the film.

A este titulo le doy un 8/10 porque contra todo pronostico me convenció de sobremanera porque lo tiene todo, hay mucho suspenso, intriga, está el elemento sorpresivo que ayuda mucho a la trama, hay jumpscare que si son bastantes inesperados y es una historia muy simple pero que al final todo llega a un secreto bastante turbio. En cuanto al final, fue uno aceptable la verdad no me quejo, nada del otro mundo. Tiene una duración de una hora 45 minutos y la pueden encontrar en Disney Plus. Les dejo el tráiler para que le echen un ojo. Se las recomiendo mucho, es una película decente y muy digna del género.

I give this title an 8/10 because against all odds it convinced me greatly because it has everything, there is a lot of suspense, intrigue, there is the element of surprise that helps a lot to the plot, there are jumpscare that are quite unexpected and it is a very simple story but in the end everything comes to a rather murky secret. As for the ending, it was an acceptable one, I'm not complaining, nothing to complain about. It has a duration of one hour 45 minutes and you can find it in Disney Plus.
