Quien alguna vez ha estado molesto con la vida al punto de que todo lo que te rodea, incluso lo más mínimo, te puede llegar a molestar a tal punto de que sientes como la ira te recorre tus venas sin ningún tipo de control? - pues de algo así es esta nueva serie de Netflix. Lo primero que deberían de saber es el concepto de la palabra BEEF cuyo significado se remonta a los raperos y no es otra cosa que una pelea física o de palabras entre dos partes que tienen algún tipo de diferencias. En esta nueva producción veremos como una mínima pelea o enfrentamiento se sale completamente de control al punto de llegar a sacar lo peor de cada quien, de hecho esa es su premisa.

Who has ever been annoyed with life to the point that everything around you, even the smallest thing, can annoy you to the point that you feel anger running through your veins without any control? - Well, that's what this new Netflix series is about. The first thing you should know is the concept of the word BEEF whose meaning goes back to rappers and is nothing more than a physical or verbal fight between two parties that have some kind of differences. In this new production we will see how a minimal fight or confrontation gets completely out of control to the point of bringing out the worst in everyone, in fact that is its premise.

Comencé a ver esta serie porque han sido innumerables veces que he leído maravillas de ella y debo decir que tenían toda la razón, les anticipo que para mi será de lo mejor del año incluso una grata sorpresa como en su momento fue Severance. Diez capítulos en donde la comedia y el drama van de la mano para lograr entender las vidas de dos personas que de por si odian su actualidad y que ese descontento lo materializan dirigiéndolo a su contraparte de una manera desmedida. Esta serie es una con la que muchas personas pueden sentirse identificadas, por no decir la inmensa mayoría, pero también es una que nos deja un aprendizaje importante. Pero bueno, vayamos y hablemos del mejor BEEF que he visto en mucho tiempo.

I started watching this series because I have read wonders about it countless times and I must say that they were absolutely right, I anticipate that for me it will be one of the best of the year, even a pleasant surprise as Severance was in its time. Ten chapters where comedy and drama go hand in hand to understand the lives of two people who hate their current situation and who materialize that discontent by directing it to their counterpart in a disproportionate way. This series is one with which many people can identify, not to say the vast majority, but it is also one that leaves us an important learning. But well, let's go ahead and talk about the best BEEF I've seen in a long time.

Este enfrentamiento comienza con Danny Cho (Steven Yeun) y Amy Lau (Ali Wong) cuando un buen día cada uno estaba en su mundo sumergidos en sus rutinas diarias hasta que el destino o las cosas de la vida los cruza en un mismo camino. Pero no de la mejor forma, nada que ver, esto fue en un estacionamiento en donde se da el primer roce y es que al intentar salir de el por poco chocan dando inicio a una oleada de odio sin sentido. Uno pensaría que todo terminaría allí pero nada más alejado de la realidad y es que por esa ira interna que llevan acumulada se desencadenaría una persecución entre los dos que culminaría en nada bueno.

This confrontation begins with Danny Cho (Steven Yeun) and Amy Lau (Ali Wong) when one fine day each one was in their own world immersed in their daily routines until fate or the things of life crosses them on the same path. But not in the best way, nothing to see, this was in a parking lot where the first friction occurs and when they try to leave the parking lot they almost collide, starting a wave of senseless hatred. One would think that everything would end there, but nothing could be further from the truth, because of the internal anger that they have accumulated, a persecution between the two would be unleashed, which would culminate in nothing good.

La trama empieza cuando ambos deciden tomar cartas en el asunto y comienzan a tomar la "justicia" por sus propias manos y a su manera. Poco a poco van descubriendo cosas uno del otro y van jugando con ellas al punto de que a medida que va avanzando la historia y sin darse cuenta su realidad, su modo de vida y todo su entorno se verán afectados por la decisiones que Danny y Amy comenzarán a tomar. Y es que la ira puede llegar a degastar tanto física como mentalmente y esto será la clave en esta serie. Honestamente esta serie es una genialidad y es que no lo dije pero está producida por A24, de las productoras más importantes y relevantes de la industria encargados de The Whale, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Uncut Gems, Midsommar entre cientos de otras.

The plot begins when both decide to take matters into their own hands and begin to take "justice" into their own hands and in their own way. Little by little they discover things about each other and play with them to the point that as the story progresses and without realizing it, their reality, their way of life and their entire environment will be affected by the decisions that Danny and Amy will begin to take. And it is that anger can degast both physically and mentally and this will be the key in this series. Honestly this series is a genius and I did not say it but it is produced by A24, one of the most important and relevant production companies in the industry responsible for The Whale, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Uncut Gems, Midsommar among hundreds of others.

Lo curioso de esta serie es que cuando la comienzas a ver la primera impresión que te da es de que pareciera que lo que se viene es una comedia negra llena de situaciones random en donde el objetivo único es reírse y ya pero no, no es eso. A medida que nos vamos adentrando en la vida de todos y en lo que deciden hacer solo para fregar al otro nos vamos dando cuenta de que hay cosas más profundas en la personalidad de todos los protagonistas que no han sido resueltas y que al final terminan siendo el combustible de todas su reacciones y acciones. Es algo así como una serie de hechos desafortunados que poco a poco se van haciendo más y más grandes hasta el punto de que todo se descontrola y sus vidas, tal y como la conocen, nunca vuelve a ser las mismas.

The funny thing about this series is that when you start watching it the first impression you get is that it seems that what is coming is a black comedy full of random situations where the only goal is to laugh and that's it, but no, it's not that. As we get deeper into everyone's lives and what they decide to do just to screw with each other we realize that there are deeper things in the personalities of all the main characters that have not been resolved and that in the end end end up being the fuel for all their reactions and actions. It's something like a series of unfortunate events that little by little get bigger and bigger to the point that everything spirals out of control and their lives, as they know it, are never the same again.

Y si, hay comedia porque al final es una serie que cabe perfectamente dentro de ese genero. Hay escenas en donde te ríes duro de las desgracias ajenas ya que al final es eso, ver como dos familias buscan sacar lo peor del otro pero en el medio pasan muchos sinsentidos que son verdaderamente buenos y graciosos. Evidentemente también está el drama que supone los efectos de todas esas cosas que hacen en nombre de la rabia, siempre hay consecuencias. Hay un tema familiar importante porque una de las premisas es que nadie es buena gente, todos en algunas ocasiones actuamos en beneficio propio y esto en parte es gracias a ciertos traumas del pasado que tienen que ver un poco con el entorno de la familia.

And yes, there is comedy because in the end it is a series that fits perfectly within that genre. There are scenes where you laugh hard at the misfortunes of others because in the end that's what it is, to see how two families seek to bring out the worst in each other but in the middle there is a lot of nonsense that is really good and funny. Obviously there is also the drama of the effects of all those things they do in the name of rage, there are always consequences. There is an important family theme because one of the premises is that nobody is good people, we all sometimes act for our own benefit and this is partly thanks to certain traumas of the past that have to do a little with the family environment.

Una vez que terminé de ver la serie si me hice la pregunta de que si uno verdaderamente puede llegar a verse como Danny o Amy en la vida real y la verdad creo que si. Es mentira que nadie haya pensado en tomar venganza hacia otra persona por alguna cosa que haya hecho o dicho, esos pensamientos están insertados en todos nosotros, los que nos diferencia es como actuamos ante esos "ataques". Claro, todo dependerá de que tan en orden esté nuestra vida justamente en ese momento y acá es donde está el punto clave, Danny y Amy no estaban pasando por el mejor momento, uno es un contratista fracasado y ella es una empresaria que está inconforme y cansada de su vida tal y como está. Bastó un casi choque para liberar toda esa presión y rabia que estaba contenida en sus cuerpos.

Once I finished watching the series I did ask myself the question if you can really see yourself as Danny or Amy in real life and the truth is that I think so. It is a lie that no one has ever thought of taking revenge on another person for something they have done or said, those thoughts are embedded in all of us, what makes us different is how we act in front of those "attacks". Of course, everything will depend on how in order is our life just at that moment and here is where the key point is, Danny and Amy were not going through the best moment, one is a failed contractor and she is a businesswoman who is dissatisfied and tired of her life as it is. A near collision was enough to release all that pressure and anger that was contained in their bodies.

Los personajes son brutales, todos y cada uno de ellos. Steven y Ali son increíbles, la química que hay entre ellos dos es abismal, se nota mucho a través de la pantalla, pero es una que va más allá de la típica romántica, cuando los ves odiándose y diciéndose de todo sabes que hay algo ahí interesante. Los dos son muy diferentes pero a la vez muy iguales, ambos tienen una presión y un trauma muy arraigado con sus padres que no superan aún y que sin dudas es el causante de la personalidad y forma de ser de cada uno. Ver como lidian con eso y con todo el "beef" es muy top. Otro personaje bueno es David Choe quien es Isaac, el primo de Danny. Para él la familia es primero a pesar de ser un delincuente y estafador, es quien le da un poco de acción a todo gracias a su explosiva personalidad, imperdible.

The characters are brutal, each and every one of them. Steven and Ali are amazing, the chemistry between the two of them is abysmal, it really shows through the screen, but it's one that goes beyond the typical romantic one, when you see them hating each other and telling each other everything you know there's something interesting there. The two are very different but at the same time very equal, both have a pressure and a deep-rooted trauma with their parents that they still do not overcome and that undoubtedly is the cause of the personality and way of being of each one. Seeing how they deal with that and all the "beef" is very top notch. Another good character is David Choe who is Isaac, Danny's cousin. For him the family comes first despite being a crook and conman, he is the one who gives a little action to everything thanks to his explosive personality, not to be missed.

Como ya dije de las mejores series que he visto y probablemente vea este año, actuaciones de primera, una historia muy curiosa y bien llevada, una comedia con todas las de la ley pero con una carga dramática en el fondo incluso hasta psicológica. De verdad es imperdible, le doy un 9/10, la recomiendo mucho ya que todo el mundo debería de verla. Está en Netflix, son diez episodios de media hora cada uno, se ve bastante rápido. El tráiler se los dejó por acá.

As I said, one of the best series I've seen and probably will see this year, first class performances, a very curious and well handled story, a full-fledged comedy but with a dramatic charge in the background even psychological. It really is a must-see, I give it a 9/10, I highly recommend it and everyone should see it. It's on Netflix, there are ten episodes of half an hour each, it's pretty quick to watch.
