El genero de superhéroes, si es que se le puede llamar así, es uno que en los últimos años ha venido en franca caída y agotamiento por parte de los fanáticos y de las mismas productoras que no son capaces de entregar producciones de calidad. Hace tiempo dije que no volvía al cine a ver nada que esté relacionado con estas personas con poderes especiales, sean de Marvel o DC y cumpliendo a esa palabra y tras su salida a lo digital hoy vamos a hablar de Blue Beetle, lo más reciente del universo DC Comics ahora bajo la mente de James Gunn. Lo último que vi de DC fue The Flash, película con más oscuros que claros, lo que me lleva a decir que Blue Beetle con un presupuesto bastante menor se la lleva por el medio muy fácilmente, por lo menos para mi.

The superhero genre, if you can call it that, is one that in recent years has been in clear decline and exhaustion on the part of the fans and the same production companies that are not able to deliver quality productions. Some time ago I said that I would not go back to the movies to see anything related to these people with special powers, whether from Marvel or DC and keeping to that word and after its release to digital today we are going to talk about Blue Beetle, the latest from the DC Comics universe now under the mind of James Gunn. The last thing I saw from DC was The Flash, a movie with more dark than light, which leads me to say that Blue Beetle with a much smaller budget takes it down the middle very easily, at least for me.

Blue Beetle tiene una particularidad, para bien o para mal ya eso dependerá de cada quien, y es que está dirigida enteramente al publico latino pero al punto que en varios pasajes del film sentía que estaba viendo una típica novela mexicana. Muchas referencias, dichos, comportamientos, toda una idiosincrasia que en lo personal disfruté bastante porque al final se vuelve jocosa y te saca un par de sonrisas de una manera muy natural. Y es que hasta la trama se asemeja a una de esas producciones con sus personajes tan peculiares; ahora, esto la hace menos que cualquier otra? - para mi no aunque se sabe que su taquilla fue un fracaso. Pero bueno, hablemos un poco de este nuevo intento de DC Comics de querer revivir algo que está sumamente muerto.

Blue Beetle has a particularity, for better or worse that will depend on each person, and that is that it is aimed entirely at the Latino audience but to the point that in several passages of the film I felt I was watching a typical Mexican novel. Many references, sayings, behaviors, a whole idiosyncrasy that I personally enjoyed a lot because at the end it becomes humorous and makes you smile a couple of times in a very natural way. And even the plot resembles one of those productions with its peculiar characters; now, does this make it less than any other? - Not for me, although it is known that its box office was a failure. But well, let's talk a little about this new attempt by DC Comics to revive something that is extremely dead.

Con el inconfundible ritmo de Calle 13 con Atrévete-te-te da inicio esta historia en la que Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña), el mismo de Karate Kid, es un joven como cualquier otro que lo único que quiere hacer con su vida es poder ayudar a su familia a seguir surgiendo después de una serie de malas noticias. Como dije no es que esta familia sea particular, es que así son nuestras familias latinas, alegres, ruidosas, poco discretas pero con un amor y cariño inmenso y eso es lo que vemos de buenas a primeras. La cosa es que en esa busqueda de trabajo se topa, por mera casualidad, con Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezine), la hija de uno de los fundadores de la empresa Kord, una que se encarga de crear armaduras especiales para el combate usando tecnología de punta.

The thing is that in this job search, by mere chance, he runs into Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezine), the daughter of one of the founders of the company Kord, one that is responsible for creating special armor for combat using the latest technology.

Después de una serie de eventos desafortunados un escarabajo de naturaleza alienígena cae en las manos de Jaime. Lo que rápidamente descubrirá nuestro protagonista es que dicho escarabajo es otra armadura pero con cierta conciencia capaz de destruir lo que se le atraviese en el camino. A partir de acá veremos como Jaime, ya siendo un superhéroe en toda regla, será capaz de controlar y entender este nuevo cambio en su vida al mismo tiempo que le tocará proteger a su familia de aquellos que van tras dicho artefacto. Lo dicho, es un film en donde lo que predomina es el arraigo familiar, este será el motor de todo lo que pasa, incluso en ambos bandos.

After a series of unfortunate events, a scarab of alien nature falls into Jaime's hands. What our protagonist quickly discovers is that the beetle is another armor but with a certain conscience capable of destroying whatever comes in its way. From here we will see how Jaime, already a full-fledged superhero, will be able to control and understand this new change in his life while he will have to protect his family from those who are after this artifact. As said, this is a film where family roots predominate, this will be the engine of everything that happens, even on both sides.

Es más que sabido que tanto Marvel como DC tienen sus contrapartes en cada universo, para que entiendan un poco la naturaleza de Blue Beetle es como si dijéramos que estamos viendo el Venom de DC. Este es más tecnológico y artificial pero al final es casi lo mismo, son entes que a través de una simbiosis se unen al respectivo huésped para convertirse en uno a la hora de necesitarlo. Por lo que no es que sea una copia del personaje de Marvel sino que así ha sido siempre. Creo que esto es lo que hace que las personas se cansen un poco y de allí el fracaso de taquilla, la gente quiere algo novedoso, de calidad y no estar sacando personajes que parecen no ser tan relevantes como se piensa. Blue Beetle podría tener potencial a futuro? - dependerá de James Gunn pero si me lo preguntan yo pensaría que si, quizás algo con otra visión y mejor hecho.

It is more than known that both Marvel and DC have their counterparts in each universe, to understand a little the nature of Blue Beetle is as if we were saying that we are seeing the Venom of DC. This one is more technological and artificial but in the end is almost the same, they are entities that through a symbiosis join the respective host to become one at the time of need. So it is not that it is a copy of the Marvel character but it has always been so. I think this is what makes people a little tired and hence the box office failure, people want something new, quality and not to be bringing out characters that seem to be not as relevant as they think. Blue Beetle could have potential in the future? - It will depend on James Gunn but if you ask me I would think so, maybe something with a different vision and better made.

Algo que si me sorprendió fue el bendito uso del CGI, notablemente mejor empleado que en Flash, parece una locura pero les prometo que no es así. A mi Flash me gustó, pudo ser cien veces mejor pero me gustó pero al ver las escenas en donde se usan estas imágenes computarizadas acá en Blue Beetle quedé un poco asombrado por la calidad que tenían, inmediatamente las comparé con las de Flash y me reí. Las escenas muy bien logradas, nunca sentí estar viendo algo de mala calidad, el diseño del traje y de todo lo que lo rodea también fue algo top. Desconozco si las escenas de peleas las hizo el propio Xolo, se que él sabe de este tipo de movimientos y coreografías, pero también estuvieron muy cool, en estos aspectos de verdad que la película es muy buena y digna.

Something that did surprise me was the blessed use of CGI, remarkably better used than in Flash, it seems crazy but I promise you it's not. I liked Flash, it could have been a hundred times better but I liked it but when I saw the scenes where these computerized images are used here in Blue Beetle I was a little amazed by the quality they had, I immediately compared them with those of Flash and I laughed. The scenes were very well done, I never felt I was watching something of bad quality, the design of the suit and everything around it was also top notch. I don't know if the fight scenes were made by Xolo himself, I know he knows this kind of movements and choreographies, but they were also very cool, in these aspects the movie is really good and worthy.

La trama. Es una película muy familiar, demasiada diría yo. Es una en donde el protagonismo a esos personajes secundarios muchas veces es excesivo con el afán de querer buscar ser gracioso y hacer que todo sea algo que esté "fuera de la caja", de hacer un poco más impredecible el curso de la historia. Que esto sea así hace que a lo largo de la película notemos mucho sentimentalismo, mucha conversaciones profundas, relaciones típicas entre los miembros de la familia, no se, a veces sentía que muchas no estaba viendo un film de superhéroes, ya lo dije pero es necesario volverlo a acotar. Esto es lo que quizás hizo que mi interés bajara bastante en varios momentos, pasaban cosas super innecesarias, ver a una abuela agarrar un ametralladora futurista casi de su tamaño fue algo que no lo vi venir y la verdad no se que opinar al respecto.

It is one where the protagonism to those secondary characters is often excessive with the desire to try to be funny and make everything something that is "out of the box", to make the course of the story a little more unpredictable. That this is so makes that throughout the film we notice a lot of sentimentality, a lot of deep conversations, typical relationships between family members, I do not know, sometimes I felt that many times I was not watching a superhero film, I already said it but it is necessary to rephrase it. This is what perhaps made my interest drop quite a bit in several moments, super unnecessary things happened, seeing a grandmother grab a futuristic machine gun almost her size was something I didn't see coming and I really don't know what to think about it.

Xolo es un actor decente, en lo personal no encajé con él, lo siento muy melodramático, a veces hasta exagerado en lo que hacía, a lo mejor él es una de las razones de que esta película no haya tenido el éxito que esperaban. No estuvo mal solo que a mi no me gustó del todo. Con el que si la pasé bien fue con Rudy (George López), el tío de Jaime. Fue el encargado de darle cierta chispa a todas las situaciones, evidentemente al ser un comediante tiene esa gracia necesaria para hacer reír. Un personaje totalmente polifacético y fresco. De resto pues sin mucho más que mencionar, Jenny estuvo promedio al igual que los demás miembros de la familia, nada destacable. Hay que mencionar a Susan Sarandon, una estrella consagrada quien hizo de villana. Desafortunadamente tampoco fue algo resaltable.

Xolo is a decent actor, personally I didn't like him, I felt he was very melodramatic, sometimes even exaggerated in what he did, maybe he is one of the reasons why this movie wasn't as successful as expected. It wasn't bad, I just didn't like it at all. The one I did have a good time with was Rudy (George Lopez), Jaime's uncle. He was in charge of giving a certain spark to all the situations, evidently being a comedian he has the necessary grace to make people laugh. A totally multifaceted and fresh character. As for the rest, Jenny was average as well as the other members of the family, nothing remarkable. We must mention Susan Sarandon, an established star who played the villain. Unfortunately, she was not outstanding either.

La película no es mala, sinceramente no lo es, el detalle es que tiene esos elementos que les comentaba que para mi le quitaron un poco de atractivo, a lo mejor otros dirán que precisamente esos detalles fueron la magia que hizo que a pesar de todo a las personas les gustara. Hay que recordar que por el hecho de que la taquilla haya sido mala no quiere decir que a la gente cuando le vio no le haya gustado. Buen CGI y buenas escenas. La recomiendo? - si, es diferente pero vale la pena echarle un ojo. Tiene una duración de dos horas. Les dejo el tráiler.

The film is not bad, honestly it is not, the detail is that it has those elements that I mentioned that for me took away a little of its appeal, maybe others will say that precisely those details were the magic that made people like it in spite of everything. You have to remember that just because the box office was bad doesn't mean that people didn't like it when they saw it. Good CGI and good scenes.
