Hemos llegado a una de las películas que más ganas tenía de ver y esto es por dos razones: porque soy muy fanático del tenis y porque soy más fanático todavía de Will Smith así que estaba seguro que vería un film que estaría a la altura y más si está nominado a los premios Oscar. Smith siempre me ha gustado como actor por su capacidad interpretativa y la facilidad con que encarna a un personaje real, lo vimos cuando hizo "En búsqueda de la felicidad" y ahora con el papá de las hermanas Williams.

We have arrived at one of the movies I was most looking forward to see and this is for two reasons: because I am a big tennis fan and because I am even more of a Will Smith fan so I was sure I would see a film that would be up to par and even more if it is nominated for an Oscar. I have always liked Smith as an actor because of his acting ability and the ease with which he embodies a real character, we saw it when he did "In Pursuit of Happyness" and now with the Williams sisters' dad.

Es una película en la que no necesitas saber quienes son Venus y Serena para entenderla y empatizar con ella ni muchos entender de tenis para disfrutarla. Te lo digo porque es una historia que va más allá de eso, es como un drama social con tintes raciales pero que también tiene una altísima carga de superación, dedicación y entrega a la hora de estar detrás de un sueño o un objetivo. Por lo general estas películas autobiográficas en el mundo del deporte son muy buenas, muchas de las que he visto valen la pena y El Método Williams no es la excepción a esa regla. Hablemos entonces un poco de ella.

It is a film in which you don't need to know who Venus and Serena are to understand and empathize with it, nor do you need to understand tennis to enjoy it. I say this because it is a story that goes beyond that, it is like a social drama with racial overtones but also has a high load of overcoming, dedication and dedication when it comes to being behind a dream or a goal. Usually these autobiographical films in the world of sports are very good, many of the ones I've seen are worthwhile and The Williams Method is no exception to that rule. So let's talk about it a little bit.

Bueno, para aquellos que no estén familiarizados con el tema esta es una historia que habla acerca de Richard Williams (Will Smith), padre de las super potencias del tenis mundial Venus (Saniyya Sidney) y Serena Williams (Demi Singleton). Aquí no es que vamos a ver la historia de la familia ni la de él mismo, esto se basa en una parte muy especifica de sus vidas cuando Richard comienza a entrenar a sus hijas apegándose a un plan de su propia autoría con el que prometía y aseguraba llevar a sus hijas a lo más alto del tenis mundial.

Well, for those of you who are not familiar with the subject this is a story about Richard Williams (Will Smith), father of tennis super powers Venus (Saniyya Sidney) and Serena Williams (Demi Singleton). Here we are not going to see the story of the family or himself, this is based on a very specific part of their lives when Richard begins to train his daughters sticking to a plan of his own authorship with which he promised and assured to take his daughters to the top of the tennis world.

Por si alguno no lo saben pero el tenis era conocido como el "deporte blanco" por razones obvias, era una disciplina dominada enteramente por personas blancas y en donde la gente negra no tenía cabida. Ese fue uno de los grandes paradigmas con el que Richard tuvo que batallar por muchos años para lograr el éxito que tanto quería para sus hijas.

In case some of you don't know, but tennis was known as the "white sport" for obvious reasons, it was a discipline dominated entirely by white people and where black people had no place. That was one of the great paradigms that Richard had to struggle with for many years to achieve the success he wanted so badly for his daughters.

Este film es un viaje de superación de principio a fin. Estamos hablando de una familia que vivía en un barrio peligroso dominado por bandas callejeras y al ser cinco hermanas las convertía en fichas fáciles de cualquier malviviente de la zona. Y es ahí en donde vemos la determinación de Richard que impulsado por su plan y su pasado nunca permitió que sus hijas se desviaran del camino; al principio puede que esa figura paterna les choque por sus formas y maneras de impartir esa disciplina pero la realidad es que siempre tuvo la razón, a pesar de lo estricto e intransigente que podía llegar a ser.

This film is a journey of overcoming from beginning to end. We are talking about a family that lived in a dangerous neighborhood dominated by street gangs and being five sisters made them easy targets for any bad guy in the area. And it is there where we see the determination of Richard who, driven by his plan and his past, never allowed his daughters to deviate from the path; at the beginning this father figure may shock them because of his ways and ways of imparting discipline, but the reality is that he was always right, despite how strict and uncompromising he could be.

Lo importante en esta película es el plan; había que mantenerse en el plan para logra el éxito. Un éxito que Richard visualizó años y años atrás al conocer el gran potencial de sus hijas y que combinado con sus métodos y formas de enseñar sin duda alguna garantizaron la inmensa cantidad de logros que cosecharon estas hermanas en las canchas de tenis. Y es que un padre siempre va a querer lo mejor para sus hijos y puede que la forma no guste pero el fondo de la situación es lo vital acá, esa es la enseñanza que a mi parecer deja esta historia.

The important thing in this film is the plan; you had to stick to the plan to achieve success. A success that Richard envisioned years and years ago when he knew the great potential of his daughters and that combined with his methods and ways of teaching undoubtedly guaranteed the immense amount of achievements that these sisters reaped on the tennis courts. A father will always want the best for his children and may not like the form, but the essence of the situation is what is vital here, that is the lesson that I believe this story teaches us.

Hay algo que realmente me impresionó y es la caracterización de Will Smith. Repito, no hace falta tener contexto del tenis ni de sus personajes para disfrutarla pero en lo personal se como es y como habla el padre de las Williams y la similitud con respecto al papel de Will es de otro mundo. La forma de la voz al hablar, los gestos, el caminar y sobretodo la actitud arrogante, soberbia pero increíblemente decidida daban la sensación como que si realmente estuviéramos viendo al verdadero Richard en la pantalla.

There is something that really impressed me and that is the characterization of Will Smith. I repeat, it is not necessary to have a context of tennis or its characters to enjoy it but personally I know how the Williams' father is and how he speaks and the similarity with respect to Will's role is out of this world. The way he speaks, the gestures, the way he walks and above all the arrogant, arrogant but incredibly determined attitude gave the feeling that we were really seeing the real Richard on the screen.

Will Smith es un señor de la actuación al que sin duda habría que considerar seriamente para ganarse la estatuilla de los Oscars este año, hizo un papel de diez alagado por las mismas hermanas Williams. Creo que no hay mejor critica que esa. Dentro del casting tenemos también a Jon Bernthal quien hace de Rick Macci, el entrenador que en definitiva terminó entrenando a Venus. Hay que decir y ya que estamos hablando del casting que fue uno muy bien hecho porque además de Will, los papeles de las hermanas fueron otros que estuvieron a la altura.

Will Smith is an acting gentleman who should definitely be seriously considered to win the Oscars statuette this year, he played a ten role praised by the Williams sisters themselves. I think there is no better review than that. Also in the cast we have Jon Bernthal who plays Rick Macci, the trainer who ultimately ended up training Venus. It must be said and since we are talking about the casting that it was a very well done one because besides Will, the roles of the sisters were others who were up to par.

Hagan este ejercicio: busquen fotos de Venus y Serena de niñas y verán el parecido tan impresionante con respecto a estas dos actrices. No quiero sonar repetitivo pero al igual que con Smith estas dos jóvenes lograron captar la esencia pura de las Williams, la forma de ser siendo Venus más calmada y Serena más aguerrida, la forma de jugar el tenis y de como daban los golpes y se movían en la cancha, vuelvo de nuevo con la forma de hablar y el caminar. Son elementos que hay que apreciar y tomar mucho en cuenta porque son personas reales a las que ellos están interpretando y mientras más exacto sea todo, más creíble será la historia y por tanto más valor tendrá.

Do this exercise: look for pictures of Venus and Serena as children and you will see the striking resemblance between these two actresses. I don't want to sound repetitive but as with Smith, these two young women managed to capture the pure essence of the Williams, the way of being, Venus being calmer and Serena being more tough, the way they played tennis and the way they hit their shots and moved on the court, I come back again to the way they talked and walked. These are elements that have to be appreciated and taken into account because they are real people that they are interpreting and the more accurate everything is, the more credible the story will be and therefore the more value it will have.

En conclusión es una historia increíble que ya algunos conocíamos un poco pero verla llevada al cine por uno de los más grande como lo es Will Smith, porque el fue productor en esta película, es algo que merece mucho la pena ver. Deja una enseñanza clave de que la renuncia al trabajo duro y a las convicciones nunca debe ser una opción y que si tienes un plan, apégate a él, así de simple.

In conclusion it is an incredible story that some of us already knew a little but to see it brought to the movies by one of the greatest like Will Smith, because he was a producer in this film, is something that is well worth seeing. It leaves a key teaching that giving up hard work and convictions should never be an option and that if you have a plan, stick to it, simple as that.

Le doy un 8/10 por la gran actuación de Will Smith y porque supo captar a la perfección la personalidad de Richard Williams. Porque es un drama que aunque muchos conocemos el final de esa historia y de lo grande que llegaron a ser las hermanas no deja de ser duro e inspirador. Tiene una duración de un poco menos de dos horas y media en donde en ningún momento te vas a cansar y aburrir, al contrario es una historia que atrapa por lo profunda e interesante que es. El tráiler para que vean por encima el gran trabajo de Will Smith.

I give it an 8/10 because of Will Smith's great performance and because he knew how to capture the personality of Richard Williams to perfection. Because it is a drama that although many of us know the end of that story and how great the sisters became, it is still hard and inspiring. It has a duration of a little less than two and a half hours where at no time you will get tired and bored, on the contrary it is a story that catches you because of how deep and interesting it is.
