Yes, folks, the Koreans have done it again. The last thing I saw from them was a series—or K-drama—called Agent Kim Reactivated, which is absolutely wild. For a long time—and rather foolishly on my part—I was reluctant to watch these kinds of productions, but the reality is that our friends from South Korea have the quality, the budget, and the great actors to pull off whatever they set their minds to. Today, I want to talk to you about one of the hottest trending movies—in fact, it was trending here on Srobble for several weeks: Colony, a film reminiscent of World War Z (the one starring Brad Pitt). I don't think I need to explain the genre much, but I can tell you right now that it is a high-quality, superbly crafted film.
Y si amigos, los coreanos lo han vuelto hacer. La última cosa que vi de ellos fue una serie o k-drama llamado "Agent Kim Reactivated" el cual es una verdadera locura. Por mucho tiempo y de manera tonta de mi parte estuve reacio a ver este tipo de producciones pero la realidad es que nuestros amigos de Corea del Sur tienen mucha calidad, presupuesto y grandes actores para hacer lo que se propongan. En esta oportunidad les venga a hablar de una de las películas que más en tendencia están, de hecho acá en Srobble lo estuvo por varias semanas; Colony, una especie de Guerra Mundial Z, aquella protagonizada por Brad Pitt. Creo que no hay que explicar mucho el género de esto pero desde ya les digo que es un film de mucha calidad y super bien hecho.
Yeon Sang-ho is the director here—the same filmmaker behind Train to Busan, another major South Korean zombie movie. What is this one about? It begins at a conference where a pioneering company is showcasing its breakthroughs in biotechnology—a field that uses living organisms to improve various aspects of life or, in this instance, to enhance humanity itself. A deadly, contagious virus is deliberately released at the venue—as you’ll see in the film—turning people into "zombies." However, they are actually part of a collective or colony that gradually learns and evolves by absorbing information from its surroundings. In other words, these aren't your typical infected types who just stumble into walls and stay there; far from it. They are creatures with an extraordinary capacity for adaptation, making them extremely dangerous.
Yeon Sang-ho es el director de esto, el mismo de Tren a Busan, otra de las grandes películas de zombies surcoreanas. De que trata esta? - pues nos encontramos en una conferencia en donde una empresa pionera está presentando sus avances en la biotecnología, ciencia que usa a los seres vivos para mejorar otros aspectos de la vida o como en este caso para mejorar a la propia humanidad. Resulta que en dicho lugar y de manera deliberada, ya lo verán en el film, se libera un virus mortal y contagioso que convierte a las personas en "zombies", aunque en realidad son parte de una comunidad o colonia que hace que poco a poco vayan aprendiendo conforme van obteniendo información de su entorno. Es decir, no son los típicos infectados que se tropiezan con las paredes y allí se quedan, nada que ver; son criaturas con una capacidad altísima de adaptación lo que cual las hacen muy peligrosas.
The story unfolds in a shopping and convention complex; as terror spreads, the building is sealed off, trapping everyone inside with no way in or out. Naturally, there are survivors—including Se-jeong, a biotechnology expert—who must band together to stay alive. It won't be easy; the infected creatures are not merely sick but extremely aggressive and unpredictable, defying any fixed behavioral patterns. The survivors must rely on their wits, scientific knowledge, raw survival instinct, and even physical force in their fight to make it out alive. As is typical of zombie movies, the plot is straightforward. In this instance, however, the story centers on a form of vengeance; as I mentioned, the events were deliberate rather than accidental. The virus, its spread, and the potential cure were orchestrated by someone with a somewhat philosophical agenda—the sort of person who believes humanity requires a "rebirth" to cleanse itself.
Esto ocurre en una especie de centro comercial y de convenciones por lo que en lo que comienza a propagar el terror el edificio queda clausurado sin la posibilidad de salir ni de entrar. Obviamente quedan sobrevivientes, entre ellos una profesora en esta biotecnología, Se-jeong, quienes deberán trabajar en equipo para buscar sobrevivir. No será fácil porque no es que solamente estas criaturas están infectadas sino que son extremadamente agresivas e impredecibles por lo que no cumplen siempre con patrón de conducta fijo. Así que usarán la inteligencia, el conocimiento científico, el mero instinto de supervivencia y hasta la fuerza para pelear para tratar de terminar con vida. Al ser un film de zombies las tramas por lo general son sencillas. En este caso estamos ante una especie de venganza porque como les dije todo esto fue con intención, nada fortuito. El virus, su propagación y su posible cura fueron hecho por alguien con intenciones un tanto filosóficas; esos que creen que la humanidad necesita un "renacer" para depurarse a si misma.
In terms of action, the movie is excellent; naturally, there is constant activity since everyone is confined to the same location. It is packed with tension and suspense—while not exactly scary, it keeps you fully engaged with the unfolding events. As expected, it can be quite raw and graphic, featuring blood and bodily fluids that make the zombies look truly repulsive. This brings me to the visuals, which are top-notch. The makeup work is impressive, giving the creatures an intense, grotesque appearance. The chaotic scenes—featuring wild melees and chase sequences that feel like a hunt—as well as the actual battles between the humans and the creatures, are all well worth watching. It is easy for films like this to end up looking cheap or low-quality, but that is certainly not the case here.
La película en lo que acción se refiere es muy buena, obviamente siempre está pasando algo porque están todos encerrados en un mismo sitio. Hay mucha tensión y suspenso, no es algo que da miedo pero si que te mantiene atento a las cosas que pasan. Como es de esperarse también puede llegar a ser muy cruda y grafica, hay sangre, sustancias/fluidos que hace que el aspecto de estos zombies sean realmente asquerosos. Esto me lleva a decir que todo el apartado visual es top. La forma en como maquillaron a esa gente es impresionante, la apariencia que tienen es bien intensa y grotesca. Esas escenas en donde existe el caos, que se amontonan todos contra todos, las de persecución y es que al final es como una cacería, y las propias "peleas" entre las personas y estas criaturas también valen mucho la pena. Es muy fácil que estos films se vean malos y de baja calidad pero con este en particular esto no pasa.
There is something that I always highlight about Korean productions and that is always true: how good actors they are. Being a zombie may seem silly but THESE zombies are something else, they are agile, with an impressive capacity for movement, many of them even seemed to be contortionists. In addition, the simple interpretation was very successful. I know it doesn't make much sense to classify someone who plays a zombie well as a good actor, but the reality is that they were very good, they generated repulsion and even fear by mixing movements and appearance. The other actors, the healthy people, also did theirs. We see characters of all kinds, some more useless than others and the usual ones: first me and then me, the typical selfish and bad people. Clearly there is the dose of politicians who are of no use and those who are. All in all, an excellent zombie and action movie. It lasts a little more than hours. Highly recommended, it is well made and worth seeing, especially for the ending, which according to me leaves more questions than answers. I leave the trailer below.
Hay algo que siempre destaco de las producciones coreanas y que siempre se cumple: lo buen actores que son. Ser un zombie puede parecer una tonteria pero ESTOS zombies son otra cosa, son agiles, con una capacidad de movimiento impresionante, muchos de ellos hasta contorsionistas parecían ser. Además de que la simple interpretación estaba muy lograda. Se que no tiene mucho sentido eso de catalogar de buen actor a alguien que hace bien un zombie pero la realidad es que estos eran muy buenos, generaban repulsión y hasta miedo mezclando movimientos y apariencia. Los demás actores, las personas sanas, también hicieron los suyos. Vemos personajes de todo tipo, unos más inútiles que otros y los de siempre: primero yo y después yo, los típicos egoístas y malas personas. Claramente está la dosis de los políticos que no sirven para nada y de los que si. En fin, una excelente película de zombies y de acción. Dura poco más de horas. Muy recomendada, está bien hecha y vale la pena verla, sobretodo por el final, que según yo deja más preguntas que respuestas. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.
