This is someone writing to you who grew up in the amazing 90s, one of the best decades ever in terms of pop culture. Many things emerged during those years that are defining the world today in terms of music and entertainment, one of them, without a doubt, being the Looney Tunes. On a Saturday morning, it was practically mandatory to wake up watching all those cartoons; there were quite a few, actually. Among them was the famous Wile E. Coyote trying to catch the Road Runner. His story, as we saw it, was full of failures; it was hard to understand how the things that happened to him actually happened—it was inexplicable. He always had a perfectly crafted plan to finally eat and fill his stomach, but something ALWAYS happened to ruin everything: fate, bad luck, or was there something more? Well, that's what we'll find out in this film.
Por acá les escribe alguien que creció en los impresionantes años 90, una de las mejores décadas que ha habido en lo que a cultura pop se refiere, en esos años salieron muchas cosas que están definiendo al mundo hoy en día a nivel musical y de entretenimiento siendo una de ellas, sin ninguna duda, los Looney Tunes. Un sábado en la mañana era obligatorio despertarse viendo todas esas comiquitas, eran bastante la verdad y entre ese grupo está el famoso Wile E. Coyote tratando de atrapar al Correcaminos. La historia de él ante nuestros ojos fue una llena de fracasos, no se entendía como las cosas que le pasaban realmente sucedían, era inexplicable. Siempre con un plan perfectamente elaborado para por fin poder comer y llenar el estomago pero SIEMPRE algo pasaba que le trucaba todo: el destino, mala suerte o había algo más? - pues eso es de lo que nos enteraremos en este film.
The protagonist of this story is Wile E. Coyote, who, after many years—decades, I'd say—finally grew tired of all his failed attempts to catch the Road Runner. For him, there's only one culprit: the powerful ACME Corporation. But why ACME? Because of the malfunctioning of all their products. Remember, Wile E. Coyote always ordered products from this brand, but something always went wrong; his claim is that these products are defective. To help him in this crusade, he hires Kevin Avery (Will Forte), a down-on-his-luck lawyer with a total loser mentality. At first, their relationship wasn't the best, but little by little, and with the help of other members of the firm, things start to progress until what began as a simple lawsuit ends up becoming a massive trial.
El protagonista de esto es Wile quien después de muchos años, décadas diría yo, finalmente se cansó de todos los fracasos en sus intentos por atrapar al Correcaminos por lo que para él el culpable es uno solo: la gran Corporación ACME. Pero por qué ACME? - pues por el mal funcionamiento de todos sus productos. Recuerden que el Coyote siempre pedía productos de esta marca pero algo salía mal; su demanda es que esos productos están defectuosos. Para ayudarlo en esa cruzada contrata a Kevin Avery (Will Forte), un abogado humano en la absoluta decadencia y con una mentalidad super perdedora. Al principio la relación no fue la mejor pero poco a poco y con ayuda de otros miembros del bufete la cosa comienza a avanzar hasta el punto de que lo que en principio era una simple demanda se termina convirtiendo en un juicio masivo.
On the ACME side, we have Buddy Crane (John Cena), the corporation's CEO and a powerful, intimidating lawyer who knows poor Kevin very well and knows how to make him give in quickly. The thing is, none of this intimidation and financial deals work because that's not what Wile wants (although Kevin obviously does). So, from this point on, the two men's relationship shifts, almost by necessity, and they begin to become friends, eventually developing a deep and sincere friendship. Defeating ACME is impossible, so we'll see help from some familiar characters from the world of cartoons, and yes, plenty of chaotic action worthy of the Looney Tunes. To give you an idea, this is very similar to Space Jam in the sense of the union between humans and cartoons; it seems we're in a world where the two universes coexist harmoniously and without problems.
Por el lado de ACME tenemos a Buddy Crane (John Cena), el CEO de la corporación y un abogado lleno de poder e intimidante que conoce muy bien al pobre de Kevin ya que sabe como hacerlo claudicar rápido. La cosa es que nada de esta intimidación y acuerdos económicos funcionan porque eso no es lo que quiere Wile (aunque Kevin si, obviamente) por lo que a partir de acá la sintonía de los dos cambia, casi que por obligación, y comienzan a hacerse amigos al punto de que llegamos a ver una amistad bien profunda y sincera. Ganarle a ACME es imposible por lo que veremos ayudas de algunos personajes conocidos de este mundo de las comiquitas y si, mucha acción caótica digna de los Looney Toons. Para que se hagan una idea esto es muy parecido a Space Jam en el sentido de la unión entre humanos y caricaturas, al parecer estamos en un mundo en donde los dos universos conviven sin problemas y de forma armoniosa.
It's a real blast from the past because we see characters I haven't seen in years: Tweety Bird, Sylvester the Cat, Foghorn Leghorn, Porky Pig, Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd, and a very long etcetera. That alone won me over. The other really cool thing is the scenes, all evoking that era, the typical wacky stuff, Wile E. Coyote talking to signs, senseless slapstick and explosions—everything that characterizes Looney Tunes. Believe me when I say there's action, and it's a lot of fun to watch. But it's not just that, and here's the really important part: the plot makes a lot of sense. They didn't make an empty, soulless movie; no, there's a very powerful reason for being, which provides closure for all of us: we'll finally know why everything happened to poor Wile E. He's not the enemy or the bad guy; the film comes to dismantle all those theories we had and show us things we never saw happening.
Es un golpe duro a la nostalgia porque veremos personajes que hacía años que no veía, Piolín, el gato Silvestre, el Gallo Claudio, Porky, Bugs Bunny, el Pato Lucas, Elmer Fudd y un larguísimo etc. Ya con ese simple hecho se ganó mi cariño. Lo otro que es muy cool son las escenas, todas evocando a ese pasado, las típicas cosas disparatadas, el Coyote hablando con carteles, golpes y explosiones sin sentido; todo lo que caracteriza a los Looney Toons. Créanme cuando les digo que hay acción y ella es muy divertida de ver. Pero no solo es eso y acá viene lo realmente importante: la trama tiene mucho sentido, no hicieron una película vacía y sin alma, no, hay una razón de ser muy poderosa la cual supone un cierre para todos nosotros: por fin sabremos el porque le pasaba de todo al pobre Wile. Y es que él no es el enemigo ni el malo; el film viene a desmontar todas esas teorías que teníamos y mostrarnos cosas nunca veíamos que pasaban.
But it's not all fun and games. To wrap things up, I'll say that this movie has its sentimental and reflective side. There's a fresh perspective on the relationship between Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner, and we see how big companies always have dark secrets; not everything is as it seems. You'll laugh, you'll be moved, you'll remember things from your childhood; the movie is a real emotional journey. The characters are great, John Cena is top-notch, his charisma is undeniable; Lana Condor also appears in a role that really helps Kevin; in fact, everyone was fantastic. As I said, this isn't just another film; there's depth, but above all, there's nostalgic value for a generation that grew up with this and for new generations to start learning about the Looney Tunes universe. Highly recommended, one of the best movies in this genre I've seen, and believe me, it's not hard to do it wrong. It has everything, and its success and acclaim are no accident. It's under two hours long. I'll leave the trailer here, go to the cinema and see it, it's well worth it.
Pero no todo es diversión. Para ir cerrando les digo que esta película tiene su toque sentimental y reflexivo. Hay una nueva mirada a esa relación entre el Coyote y el Correcaminos, vemos como las grandes compañías siempre tienen secretos oscuros; no todo es lo que parece. Te vas a reír, a conmover, vas a recordar cosas de tu infancia; la película es todo un viaje lleno de emociones. Los personajes están muy buenos, John Cena es top, el carisma de este tipo es muy evidente; sale también Lana Condor en un papel que ayuda mucho a Kevin; en realidad todos estuvieron muy cool. Como les decía esto no es un film más, hay profundidad pero sobretodo hay valor nostálgico para una generación que creció con esto y para las nuevas y así empiecen a conocer sobre este universo de los Looney Toons. Mega recomendada, de las mejores películas en este género que he visto y miren que no es difícil hacerlo mal. Lo tiene todo y no es casual el éxito y la aceptación que está teniendo. Dura menos de dos horas. Les dejo el tráiler por acá, vayan al cine y véanla, vale mucho la pena.
