Por segunda vez consecutiva le quise dar una oportunidad a un contenido de Netflix en lo que a terror, misterio y suspenso se refiere y es que basándome en lo que vi en el tráiler de esta miniserie la cosa podía pintar a estar bastante decente considerado a la plataforma que está detrás de todo. Y es que no es sorpresa para nadie, de hecho lo he dicho muchas veces por acá, la compañía de la letra N roja no se caracteriza mucho por hacer un buen producto, salvo sus excepciones porque si, las hay. La cosa es que Devil in Ohio es otra de esas miniseries que pudo ser un verdadero palo, como decimos en mis tierras, pero que desafortunadamente no lo fue o por lo menos para mi.

For the second time in a row I wanted to give a chance to a Netflix content as far as horror, mystery and suspense is concerned and based on what I saw in the trailer of this miniseries the thing could look pretty decent considering the platform that is behind it all. And it's no surprise to anyone, in fact I've said it many times here, the company with the red letter N is not characterized much for making a good product, with some exceptions, because yes, there are. The thing is that Devil in Ohio is another of those miniseries that could have been a real hit, as we say in my country, but unfortunately it was not, at least for me.

No hay nada que llame más la atención que una buena historia, sea ficticia o no, sobre este tipo de "organizaciones" o sectas que las personas se inventan con la finalidad de darle sentido a sus vidas. No quiero sonar como un psicólogo o un teólogo pero es que es así, la mayoría de los cultos son estafas o métodos para controlar a las personas; pudiéramos decir lo mismo de las religiones pero ese otro tema mucho más denso que no cabe acá. La historia detrás de esta miniserie es en parte real pero también cuenta con partes fantasiosas que en la idea está muy buena pero en la ejecución dejó mucho que desear. Hablemos entonces de esta nueva trama que nos trae Netflix.

There is nothing that attracts more attention than a good story, fictitious or not, about these types of "organizations" or cults that people invent in order to give meaning to their lives. I don't want to sound like a psychologist or a theologian but that's how it is, most cults are scams or methods to control people; we could say the same about religions but that's another much denser topic that doesn't fit here. The story behind this miniseries is partly real but also has fantasy parts that in the idea is very good but in the execution left much to be desired. Let's talk then about this new plot that Netflix brings us.

Esta historia da inicio con Suzanne Mathis (Emily Deschanel), una psiquiatra quien tiene una vida muy tranquila y relajada junto a su familia, esposo y tres hijas. Un buen día al hospital en donde trabaja Suzanne llega una misteriosa joven, quien parece estar desorientada y sin poder hablar pero sobre todo con un miedo terrible en su mirada; esta muchacha con el tiempo descubren que se llama Mae (Madeleine Arthur) y que su pasado esconde cosas que hubiese sido mejor si no son descubiertas. Dada la vulnerabilidad de Mae, nuestra psiquiatra decide darle alojo en su casa, algo que sin saberlo obviamente le traería más problemas que satisfacciones en un futuro muy cercano.

This story begins with Suzanne Mathis (Emily Deschanel), a psychiatrist who has a very quiet and relaxed life with her family, husband and three daughters. One day a mysterious young woman arrives at the hospital where Suzanne works, who seems to be disoriented and unable to speak but above all with a terrible fear in her eyes; this girl eventually they discover that her name is Mae (Madeleine Arthur) and that her past hides things that would have been better if they were not discovered. Given Mae's vulnerability, our psychiatrist decides to give her lodging in her house, something that without knowing it would obviously bring her more problems than satisfactions in a very near future.

Conforme va avanzando la trama nos vamos dando cuenta que Mae no es quien dice ser o que por lo menos oculta cosas que pueden ser un tanto extrañas, cosas que poco a poco van haciendo mella en una familia que casi era perfecta. También nos vamos enterando un poco más de que va y cuales son las características de la secta o culto a la que pertenecía o pertenece esta enigmática joven y del alcance de esta en algunos miembros de la sociedad. La historia tiene sus tintes de terror y suspenso que en lo personal no me terminaron de convencer, creo que vi más drama que otra cosa porque a la larga todo esto se termina convirtiendo en un problema familiar que como una bola de nieve va creciendo a medida que pasa el tiempo.

As the plot progresses we realize that Mae is not who she says she is or at least she is hiding things that may be a little strange, things that little by little are making a dent in a family that was almost perfect. We also learn a little more about the characteristics of the sect or cult to which this enigmatic young woman belonged or belongs and the reach of this in some members of society. The story has its dyes of terror and suspense that personally did not convince me, I think I saw more drama than anything else because in the long run all this ends up becoming a family problem that like a snowball is growing as time goes by.

Como dije esta serie pudo ser muy buena y le pudieron haber sacado mucho más a esa historia pero decidieron no hacerlo y pasa porque llevaron por el camino de un thriller sumamente juvenil. Creo que por eso es que no me llamó tanto la atención, porque sencillamente cuando una serie va dirigida a un público en especifico, en este caso a adolescentes y personas mucho más jóvenes que yo es inevitable que no las encuentre atractivas ya que lo que rodea a la trama son "problemas" típicos de estudiantes como el no ser popular, el baile de graduación, los amigos que se pelean por banalidades, etc. Esta miniserie es todo eso pero con la pincelada de que uno de sus personajes tiene un trasfondo oscuro que solo es tocado de vez en cuando.

As I said this series could have been very good and they could have taken much more out of that story but they decided not to do it and it happens because they took the path of a very juvenile thriller. I think that's why it didn't catch my attention, because simply when a series is aimed at a specific audience, in this case teenagers and people much younger than me, it's inevitable that I don't find it attractive because what surrounds the plot are typical student "problems" like not being popular, the prom, friends fighting over banalities, etc. This miniseries is all of that but with the twist that one of its characters has a dark undercurrent that is only touched upon from time to time.

Y es que si, el tema de este culto es tomado en cuenta siento como de una forma muy secundaria. Desconozco si la novela en la que se basó esta historia recorre el mismo camino pero sin dudas fue uno que lastimosamente no me enganchó. Pero es algo que se puede ver? - absolutamente, el tema es que hacia donde dirigieron la historia no es algo que me haya gustado. Cuando hacían hincapié en la parte donde se investigaba la secta y en todo lo que la rodeaba esos eran los momentos más interesantes de la historia porque era algo oculto, misterioso y eso es algo que llama a la curiosidad, ahí se creaba ese suspenso por querer conocer un poco más de esas personas pero de un golpe volvíamos a los problemas de pasillos de colegio.

And yes, the theme of this cult is taken into account I feel in a very secondary way. I don't know if the novel on which this story was based follows the same path but it was certainly one that unfortunately didn't hook me. But it is something that can be seen? - absolutely, the thing is that where they directed the story is not something I liked. When they emphasized the part where they investigated the sect and everything that surrounded it, those were the most interesting moments of the story because it was something hidden, mysterious and that is something that calls for curiosity, that created the suspense of wanting to know a little more about these people but suddenly we were back to the problems of school corridors.

Con esto no pretendo desmotivarlos a que no la vean, esto es solo un punto de vista de los miles que pueden haber. Creo que lo que más me gustó fue el trasfondo de los personajes, por lo menos el de Suzanne y Mae ya que son personas con un pasado bastante turbio y que reflejan esos traumas en la forma de vivir y actuar, reflejan esas carencias que llevan en sus espaldas con todos lo que los rodean y eso es algo que puede ser muy perjudicial. Suzanne es una persona que tuvo problemas familiares y que sin saberlo y por no haber sido capaz de superar aquello no logra avanzar por más que ella se lo proponga o se le crea. Y Mae es una persona indescifrable, no sabes si actúa de buena fe o con una doble intención, hay algo en ella que te invita a desconfiar pero a la vez sientes lastima por todo lo que vivió. Un personaje raro pero sin dudas el más atractivo. Hay personajes secundarios como el resto de la familia pero son eso, secundarios, el único aporte de ellos es secundar y elevar a los dos personajes principales.

I think what I liked the most was the background of the characters, at least that of Suzanne and Mae, as they are people with a rather murky past and reflect those traumas in the way they live and act, they reflect those shortcomings that they carry on their backs with all those around them and that is something that can be very harmful. Suzanne is a person who had family problems and who, unknowingly and because she has not been able to overcome them, is unable to move forward no matter how hard she tries or how much she is believed. And Mae is an indecipherable person, you do not know if she acts in good faith or with a double intention, there is something in her that invites you to distrust but at the same time you feel pity for everything she lived through. A rare character but undoubtedly the most attractive. There are secondary characters like the rest of the family but they are just that, secondary, their only contribution is to support and elevate the two main characters.

En algún momento el terror hizo efecto en mi? - no. Hay terror en esta miniserie? - si lo hay pero de una forma muy blanda y amistosa, no es uno invasivo y que no te dejará dormir. Para un amante del terror esta serie es un golpe en la cara porque siento que vendieron algo que no es ni se ve, yo llegué con las expectativas no altas pero si que me esperaba una cosa totalmente diferente a lo que me encontré. Sin dudas habrá a quienes les guste o les haya gustado pero dentro de ese grupo de personas no estoy y es una lastima, creo que había potencial. Y bueno, otra vez Netflix desperdiciando algo que podía ser por lo menos aceptable.

At some point the terror had an effect on me? - no. There is horror in this miniseries? - Yes there is but in a very soft and friendly way, it's not an invasive one that won't let you sleep. For a horror lover this series is a punch in the face because I feel that they sold something that is not and is not seen, I arrived with expectations not high but I was expecting something totally different from what I found. No doubt there will be those who like it or liked it but I'm not in that group of people and it's a shame, I think there was potential. And well, once again Netflix wasted something that could have been at least acceptable.

Le doy un 6.5/10 y estoy siendo generoso. La serie no es mala pero NO ES DE TERROR, no se puede vender algo que en esencia no lo es. Yo la catalogo más como un thriller adolescente/familiar, algo digno de ver frente al televisor con toda la familia reunida. Tiene sus detalles y guiños a un buen terror, pocos pero los tiene, puede que en ocasiones haya un poco de suspenso y tensión y los personajes estás bien, nada del otro mundo. Consta de ocho episodios de 45 minutos aproximadamente y como es sabido está en Netflix. Les dejo el tráiler para que vean y si, se animen y vean la historia, al final todo esto no es más que una opinión.

I give it a 6.5/10 and I'm being generous. The series isn't bad but it's NOT TERROR, you can't sell something that essentially isn't. I rate it more as a teen/family thriller, something worth watching in front of the TV with the whole family together. It has its details and nods to a good horror, few but it has them, there may be a little suspense and tension at times and the characters are fine, but nothing out of this world. It consists of eight episodes of approximately 45 minutes and as is known is on Netflix. I leave the trailer for you to see and yes, be encouraged and see the story, in the end all this is nothing more than an opinion.
