Forty years have passed since the day Goku met Krillin at Kame House to begin training with Master Roshi. All of this made me feel a bit nostalgic because Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z are anime I grew up with; they're a part of many people's lives. This universe, in addition to the well-known sagas, has several movies, OVAs, and specials that, surprisingly, I may not have seen even though I probably know what happens in them. Perhaps it's laziness, or maybe I just take things for granted, but the reason is that I'm missing a few things, and that's why I've decided to catch up. Today, I'll be discussing Trunks' backstory.

40 años se cumplen desde aquel día en el que Goku conoció a un tal Krilin en la Kame House para comenzar a entrenar con el maestro Roshi. Todo esto me hizo sentir un poco de nostalgia porque DB y DBZ son anime que crecieron conmigo, forman parte de la vida de muchas personas. Este universo, además de las sagas ya conocidas, tiene unas cuentas películas, OVA y especiales que aunque parezca sorprendente puede que no haya visto a pesar de que seguramente sepa que suceda en ellos. Desidia o que simplemente uno da por sentado muchas cosas pero la razón es que me faltan unas cuentas cosas y es por eso que he decidido ponerme al día con esto y el día de hoy le toca al trasfondo de Trunks.

It's really hard for me to choose just one of the three Dragon Ball Z sagas; they all have something special. But today we have to focus on one where, in the timeline in which it takes place, the main villain doesn't even exist—and yes, I'm referring to Cell. Here we are in the future, where none of the Z Fighters, except for Gohan and Trunks, manage to survive. Remember that Goku dies from a heart condition, and from then on, no one is able to stop the threat posed by Androids 17 and 18. I find it incredible that even in Dragon Ball they used time travel to solve problems, an element that's extremely common and well-known these days; this shows how advanced it was for its time.

Me cuesta mucho escoger una de las tres sagas de DBZ, todas tienen algo especial pero hoy nos tenemos que centrar en una que en la línea del tiempo en el que se desarrolla no llega a existir el villano principal y si, me refiero a Cell. Acá estamos en el futuro en donde ninguno de los guerreros Z, salvo Gohan y Trunks, logran sobrevivir. Les recuerdo que Goku muere producto de una enfermedad del corazón y a partir de ahí nadie es capaz de detener a la amenaza que representan los androides 17 y 18. Me parece increíble que hasta en Dragon Ball hayan usado los viajes en el tiempo para solucionar cosas, elemento sumamente usado y conocido en estos tiempos; esto nos habla de lo adelantado que estaba para la época.

Returning to the special, we're in the future where Gohan, now an adult and incredibly weak compared to everyone else (he doesn't even transform into a Super Saiyan 2 here), is the only one who can somewhat hold his own against this pair of androids, but always with the same result: defeat time and time again. Trunks, barely a teenager, also lacks the skills and power to fight, so he has to resign himself to always being in Gohan's weak shadow. No matter the era or timeline, Gohan will always be the most "nerfed" character in the anime. It's astonishing how Chi-Chi, his mother, ended up taking away such a great warrior. But anyway, in this timeline, Androids 17 and 18 are running rampant with unbridled evil, killing everyone indiscriminately to the point that Gohan is killed, and only Trunks remains as the resistance.

Volviendo al especial estamos entonces en el futuro en donde Gohan, ya de adulto y siendo tremendamente débil en comparación a cualquiera (acá él no se llega a transformar en SS2), es el único que puede medio hacerle frente a este par de androides pero siempre con el mismo resultado, derrotado una y otra vez. Trunks siendo apenas un adolescente tampoco tiene las habilidades ni poder para pelear por lo que le toca resignarse a siempre estar bajo la débil sombra de Gohan. No importa en que época estemos o línea del tiempo, siempre Gohan será el personaje más "nerfeado" del anime, es impresionante como Milk, su mamá, terminó quitándonos a semejante guerrero. Pero bueno, en este tiempo 17 y 18 hacen de las suyas con una maldad desmedida asesinando a diestra y siniestra a todo el mundo al punto de que Gohan es asesinado y solo Trunks es la resistencia.

This is where Bulma, always resourceful and resourceful, builds the time machine that Trunks uses to travel to the past, give Goku the medicine, and save him. But it's also during this time that Vegeta's son trains with his father, becomes ten times stronger, and returns to the future to easily deal with the androids. Trunks is one of the coolest characters in DBZ, at least for me. I think the sword adds a certain something, and I believe he could have been more powerful than Vegeta, but he chose not to be so as not to hurt his father's pride; in fact, this happens in DBZ when they fight Cell. One of the things that caught my attention is that Bulma in this future never says she wishes Vegeta were alive; she always refers to Goku as the savior. It bothers me because even in death, they still support poor Vegeta, to the point that she barely speaks to Trunks about his father; these are interesting details.

Es acá en donde Bulma, siempre crack y resolutiva, construye la maquina del tiempo que usa Trunks para viajar al pasado, darle la medicina a Goku y salvarlo. Pero también es en esa época en donde el hijo de Vegeta entrena acompañado de su padre, se vuelve 10 veces más fuerte y regresa al futuro para hacerse cargo, de una manera super sencilla, de los androides. Trunks es de los personajes más cool que tiene DBZ, por lo menos para mi, creo que la espada le da un toque y que creo que pudo ser más poderoso que Vegeta solo que él no decidió hacerlo para no herir el orgullo de su padre; de hecho eso pasa en DBZ cuando pelean contra Cell. Una de las cosas que me llamaron la atención es que Bulma en este futuro nunca dice que ojalá Vegeta estuviera vivo, siempre se refiere a Goku como el salvador. Me da bronca porque hasta muerto segundan al pobre Vegeta hasta el punto de que ella le habla muy poco de su padre a Trunks; son detalles interesantes.

And well, the androids' evil is also a factor to consider. They have absolutely no humanity. That makes me wonder, why the time jump? I think it was out of fear. They realized that Goku and his friends were much more powerful, and there was also the threat of Cell, who wanted to absorb them. As I said, I knew this story inside and out, but I had seen this episode many years ago, so revisiting it is always a really cool thing to do. My conclusion is that the true savior is Bulma, both for building the time machine and for giving Goku the medicine. She's one of the most underrated characters in anime, and this special proves it. Dragon Ball can be about suffering and sadness; sometimes you have to connect with that. I'll leave the trailer below.

Y bueno, la maldad de los androides también es un elemento a tomar en cuenta. Acá no tienen ningún ápice de humanidad. Eso me hace preguntarme, por qué el cambio entre épocas? - creo que fue por miedo, se dieron cuenta que Goku y compañía eran mucho más poderosos además de la amenaza de Cell por el tema de que buscaba absorberlos. Como les dije, esta historia me la conocía al pie de la letra pero esto lo había visto hace muchos años por lo que retomar siempre será algo muy cool de hacer. La conclusión a la que llego es que la verdadera salvadora es Bulma. Tanto por la construcción de la maquina del tiempo como por la medicina para Goku. Ella es uno de los personajes más infravalorados del anime y este especial lo demuestra. Dragon Ball puede ser sufrimiento y tristeza, a veces hay que conectar con eso.
