Hello friends, good vibes to everyone.

Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.

Day 18 of "spooky season," and this Sunday we wrap up the week with a Korean film that took the world by storm a couple of years ago. Exhuma is the perfect example of how Asian horror—which includes Japanese, Filipino, and even Thai cinema—operates on an entirely different level when it comes to the viewer's experience. Paranormal films often fall into clichés; what sets some apart from others is how that horror is presented and the impact it manages to deliver. A particularly cool aspect is that films from this part of the world often lean into folklore, infusing their stories with the cultural elements and mysticism unique to each nation—and that is precisely what we see in Exhuma: a blend of religious and cultural beliefs.

The story begins with a newborn suffering from a strange affliction—a supernatural ailment, unrelated to the child’s physical health. To address this, the infant’s wealthy family hires a renowned young shaman, Hwa-rim, along with her assistant, Bong-gil. Upon their initial assessment, they determine that the situation stems from a long-standing curse linked to the grandfather’s grave. Realizing they cannot handle this alone, they enlist two additional experts in funerary matters: a geomancer (someone who interprets the land and its features for divination) and an embalmer. The four of them set out for the grave, which is situated atop a mountain that radiates a deeply malevolent energy.

Once at the site, they exhume and remove the coffin with the intention of cremating it—but then, something goes wrong. The coffin was supposed to remain sealed, yet circumstances lead to it being opened, unleashing a nightmare for the four individuals involved and the family in question. Something escapes: a malevolent, demonic force that, after all these years, seeks only vengeance—a force intrinsically linked to the history of Korea as a nation and its war with Japan. From this point on, a series of horrific events unfolds, while the characters scramble to find a way to contain this entity and send it back to where it came from. Believe me when I say that if you’re looking for a full-blown, quintessential horror movie, this should be your top pick. The film packs in everything a good paranormal thriller needs to be truly effective: palpable tension, high-impact terrifying moments, jump scares, a touch of gore, a deep infusion of religious culture, and a compelling plot. The latter is a major highlight; it ensures that the film doesn’t just command respect through its scares, but also weaves a narrative thread that sparks genuine curiosity throughout.

Visually, it’s a spectacle. The entire Korean aesthetic—from cultural customs and shamanic rituals to the scenes where spirits emerge—is masterfully used to craft a truly terrifying atmosphere. And, of course, the depictions of the entity itself are genuinely unsettling. The Koreans excel in this regard; they clearly go to great lengths to ensure the final product is as disturbing as possible. There is also some gore—not excessive, but specifically tied to the supernatural manifestations. I thoroughly enjoyed this film; it’s been a long time since I’ve had such a great time watching a horror movie—perhaps not even Sinister provided this much of a thrill. The plot is also excellent; it functions like a puzzle that is gradually pieced together to uncover the entity’s identity and, most importantly, how to stop it.

I’ve said it before: Korean actors are incredibly expressive and emotional—even the quietest, most serious individuals turn out to be exceptional performers. The acting here is as strong as the film itself; the cast conveys exactly what is needed for the viewer to truly feel the fear, terror, or anguish in every scene. There are no weak links, not even among the supporting characters. The entire film is a wave of sensations; it never lets its guard down—even when the pace slows, it injects an extra dose of horror and intrigue to keep you completely immersed in its chilling atmosphere. I agree with everyone I’ve heard or read on the subject: this is one of the best films to come out in recent years—it has absolutely everything. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys this genre or Korean cinema. It runs for just over two hours, but it really flies by. I’ve included the trailer here so you can take a look.

I like the curse plot and the way it incorporates Korean culture and all the mysticism that comes with it. I can picture those horror scenes—it looks like a movie worth watching.

I enjoyed this movie when I watched it a couple of months ago. I was impressed with the cast's performance. It was an unexpected experience. Never knew I would enjoy a Korean horror movie. Also, the locations lent more personality to the storyline. Good review!
