Disney's influence on society has been so massive that we can't even begin to grasp it; I'm sure it's reached unimaginable places. But if we're talking about Disney, we should also mention Studio Ghibli, which is essentially the Japanese equivalent of Disney when it comes to film. Why am I making this comparison? Well, because today's film is somewhat related to that, and we're talking about, I don't know if it's a copy, but certainly a competitor to The Little Mermaid: Ponyo. I'm seeing fewer and fewer Ghibli films, so this time it was the turn of this great film, brimming with fantasy from beginning to end.

La influencia de Disney en la sociedad ha sido tan masiva que no la podemos dimensionar, estoy seguro que ha llegado a lugares inimaginables. Pero si hablamos de Disney también habría que hacer lo propio con el Studio Ghibli que vendría siendo el el Disney japonés en lo que a películas se refiere. Por qué hago esta comparación? - pues porque la película de hoy tiene que ver un tanto con eso y es que estamos hablando no se si de la copia pero si de la competidora de La Sirenita, Ponyo. Cada vez son menos y menos las películas de Ghibli que me faltan por lo que el turno esta vez le tocó a este gran film lleno de fantasía de principio a fin.

Here we have Sosuke, a 5-year-old boy who lives at the top of a cliff with his mother. One day, he goes down to the sea to play when he suddenly finds a small sea creature, perhaps a fish, trapped in a glass bottle. Upon rescuing her, a bond is automatically formed, a very beautiful and special relationship. Sosuke decides to name her Ponyo, and she happily accepts her new name. The thing is, she comes from the depths of the sea, having escaped from her father, who was preventing her from getting near humans. As you can imagine, Ponyo has certain magical powers that alter things, especially the sea, due to who her parents are.

Acá tenemos a Sosuke, un niño de 5 años que vive en lo más alto de un acantilado con su mamá. Un buen día él baja hacia el mar a jugar cuando de repente se consigue con una pequeña criatura marina, un pez quizás, atrapada en una botella de vidrio. Al rescatarla se crea de manera automática un lazo, una relación muy bonita y especial. Sosuke decide llamarla Ponyo y ella muy feliz acepta su nuevo nombre. La cosa es que ella viene de las profundidades del mar escapando de su padre quien estaba impidiendo que se acercara a los humanos. Como se pueden imaginar Ponyo tiene ciertos poderes mágicos que alteran las cosas y sobretodo el mar, esto a raíz de quienes son sus padres.

The central theme is Ponyo's determination to become human, which is why she seeks to escape the sea. What she's unaware of is the immense power she possesses, and her escape unleashes a great imbalance in the sea, causing storms with giant waves that ultimately affect the humans of the coastal village where Sosuke lives. Ponyo experiences all these powers firsthand when she tastes human blood, which she does unintentionally when she shares it with Sosuke after he rescues her. Essentially, the film focuses on the birth and development of the relationship between these two children and how this will later become crucial when Ponyo makes the most important decision of her life, both for the present and the future.

El centro de todo es que Ponyo está decidida a ser humana, de ahí a que ella buscará escapar del mar. De lo que ella no es consciente es del inmenso poder que tiene por lo que al escapar desató un gran desequilibrio en el mar lo que originó tormentas con olas gigantes que terminó afectando a los humanos del pueblo costero en donde vive Sosuke. Ponyo experimenta todos estos poderes al probar la sangre humana ya que lo hizo sin querer al compartir con Sosuke cuando la rescató. Basicamente el film trata sobre el nacimiento y el crecimiento de la relación entre este par de niños y de como esto más adelante importará a la hora de que Ponyo tome la decisión más importante de su vida, tanto para el presente como en el futuro.

But of course, this imbalance doesn't just affect the sea and everything around it; it seems the planet itself is about to suffer serious consequences if Ponyo's situation isn't resolved quickly. Look, this film is one of Ghibli's most innocent and sincere, showing us the mind and heart in their purest form. That's one of its highlights: the importance of friendship, not judging someone by their appearance, and the commitment to always being there for others. It's not a very deep or elaborate film, but it's precisely that simplicity that makes it special. Miyazaki has a gift for creating really cool characters, and here it's undoubtedly Sosuke and his mother, because yes, she's ultimately the reason he is the way he is.

Pero claro, este desequilibrio no solo afecta a el mar y todo lo que lo rodea, parece que también el propio planeta estaría a punto de sufrir graves consecuencias si la situación de Ponyo no se resuelve rápidamente. A ver, este film es de los más inocentes y sinceros que tiene Ghibli y es que vemos como es la mente y el corazón en su estado más puro. Esa es una de las cosas a destacar, la importancia de la amistad, el no juzgar a alguien por su apariencia y el compromiso que puede ver en siempre estar para el otro. No es una película muy profunda y elaborada pero es precisamente esa simpleza lo que la hace especial. Miyazaki tiene el don de crear personajes muy cool y acá es Ssosuke sin dudas y su mamá, porque si, ella al final es la razón del porque él es como es.

The animation is perfect, and the way it shows us other worlds, in this case the underwater one, is spectacular. The film also offers a critique of humanity as a society, highlighting our lack of awareness regarding the environment. One of the reasons Ponyo's father wants nothing to do with humans is because they are destructive and disrespectful of nature; the film shows how the sea and its depths are filled with trash. So yes, the film has several messages, all of them necessary and very relevant. In the end, you'll see Ponyo's decision, which brings this gem to a close. It's practically a children's story, but with the distinctive touches of Studio Ghibli. The film is highly recommended, as you might expect. An hour and a half of adventure where boredom is simply not an option. I've included the trailer below.

La animación es perfecta, la forma en como se nos muestra otros mundos, en este caso el acuático es espectacular. La película también tiene una critica hacia los humano como sociedad en el sentido del nivel de inconciencia que tenemos con no cuidar lo que nos rodea. Una de las razones del porque el papá de Ponyo no quiere nada con los humanos es porque estos son destructores y no respetan la naturaleza, en el film se muestra como el mar y su fondo está lleno de basura. Así que si, la película tiene varios mensajes y todos ellos son necesarios y muy acertados. Al final verán la decisión que toma Ponyo y con esto el fin de esta joya. Es prácticamente un cuento infantil pero con las pinceladas del Studio Ghibli. Muy recomendado el film, como no podía ser de otra manera. Hora y media de aventuras en donde aburrirte no está en los planes. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.
