Stockholm syndrome is a psychological and mental state in which a person who is or has been held against their will begins to develop feelings of affection toward their captors. In other words, you start to care for and empathize with your kidnappers. This is the best definition to understand this film. It caught my attention because it's marketed as a kind of horror film, but the truth is, it's not. It's a perverse psychological thriller, full of intrigue, where erratic behavior and dysfunctional individuals and families are the main focus and the central theme. This is because a couple of "broken" people try to "help" another person who is completely damaged by drugs and alcohol. I'm telling you, it's a strange, unsettling, but quite good film.
El síndrome de Estocolmo es un estado psicológico y mental en el que una persona la cual está o estuvo retenida en contra de su voluntad comienza a desarrollar ciertos sentimientos de afecto hacía sus captores. En otras palabras, empiezas a querer y a sentir empatía por los secuestradores. Esta es la mejor definición para entender esta película. Me llamó la atención porque se vende como una especie de terror pero la verdad es que no, es un perverso thriller psicológico y lleno de intriga en donde los comportamientos erráticos y la disfuncionalidad de las personas y familias son el plato fuerte y el centro de todo. Y esto es así porque un par de personas "rotas" pretenden "ayudar" a otra persona la cual está totalmente dañada por las drogas y el alcohol. Ya les digo que es un film raro, incomodo pero bastante bueno.
The story begins with Tommy (Anson Boon), a 19-year-old completely lost amidst the city's parties and nightlife. He's extremely violent and bully-like, consumes anything he can get his hands on, and drinks everyone else's alcohol. One night, completely wiped out by a combination of substances, he ends up separating from his group and wandering the streets, making him easy prey for Chris. This Chris (Stephen Graham) is the father of a dysfunctional family, married to Kathryn (a deeply troubled woman) and father to Jonathan (the compliant and well-behaved son). Tommy wakes up chained in the basement of this couple's house, a couple who appear normal and affectionate but are, in reality, extremely controlling to the point of being sociopathic.
La historia inicia con Tommy (Anson Boon), un joven de 19 años que está totalmente perdido entre fiestas y la vida nocturna de la ciudad, es sumamente violento y con actitudes de bully, consume lo que se le atraviese y se toma el alcohol de él y el de todos. Una noche, estando completamente aniquilado por la combinación de sustancias, termina apartándose de su grupo y queda deambulando por las calles lo que hace que se convierta en una presa fácil de capturar para Chris. Este Chris (Stephen Graham), es el padre de una familia bien disfuncional, casado con Kathryn (una mujer muy rota) y padre de Jonathan (el hijo complaciente y bueno). Tommy despierta encadenado en el sótano de la casa de este matrimonio, uno que aparenta ser normal y afectivo pero que en cambio son personas muy controladoras al punto de llegar a ser sociópatas.
What's truly terrible about the film? Well, this couple tries to subject Tommy to a kind of re-education therapy, basically by force, so that he improves and changes his behavior and ultimately becomes a "Good Boy." When I mention this syndrome, it's because at some point in the film, we begin to see it: Tommy's interactions with this family become increasingly strange as he tries to escape. The human mind is fascinating, for better or for worse, and the fact that someone suffering all kinds of abuse and mistreatment can develop a certain fondness or affection for the people responsible for that mistreatment is, to say the least, incredible. And on the other hand, seeing this family with these highly questionable behaviors, and perceiving them as normal and acceptable in their psyche and worldview, is equally, or even worse. What you have to understand is that all of this is the product of trauma, and that's exactly what this film is about.
Que es lo realmente terrible de la película? - pues que esta pareja busca someter a Tommy a una especie de terapia de reeducación, básicamente a la fuerza, para que él mejore y cambie su comportamiento y así al final termine siendo un "Good Boy". Cuando hablo de este síndrome es porque en algún momento de la película es algo que comenzaremos a ver y es que las interacciones de Tommy con esta familia cada vez se van haciendo más extrañas al mismo tiempo que él busca la manera de escapar. La mente humana es fascinante, para bien o para mal, y es que alguien el cual está sufriendo todo tipo de vejaciones y maltratos pueda llegar a formar cierto aprecio o cariño hacia las personas culpables de esos malos tratos es algo, como menos, increíble. Y por el otro lado ver a esta familia con estos compartimientos bien cuestionables y que en su psiquis y mirada de las cosas lo perciban como algo normal y aceptado es igual o hasta peor. Lo que tienen que entender es que todo esto es producto de traumas y eso exactamente de lo que va este film.
Being a thriller, this is a story full of intrigue because the answers are revealed bit by bit. At first, it's a little difficult to understand the family dynamics; you don't quite grasp the characters' behavior, especially Kathryn's (the most complex of them all), so little by little you begin to deduce what's happening to her. It's strange because at times you feel empathy for them; I think deep down they're good people, but profoundly broken and unstable, and that makes them all the more terrifying. The film maintains a constant tension, even in its "happiest" moments, because everything is so twisted, the interactions are awkward and superficial, and because you never know what action might trigger these traumas in almost every character. It's impossible for the film to bore you because these disturbing plots grab your attention since you generally don't know how it will end.
Al ser un thriller estamos ante una historia llena de intriga porque las respuestas nos la van dando a cuenta gotas. Al principio cuesta un poco entender la dinámica de la familia, uno no encaja del todo la forma de actuar de los personajes, sobretodo el de Kathryn (el más complejo de todos) por lo que poco a poco vamos a ir deduciendo que es lo que le pasa. Es raro porque por momentos sientes empatía por ellos; creo que en el fondo son gente buena pero profundamente rotas e inestables y eso las hace más aterradoras. El film vive en una tensión constante incluso en sus momentos más "felices" porque es muy retorcido todo, las interacciones son incomodas y superficiales y porque no sabes que acción puede detonar estos traumas en casi todos los personajes. Es imposible que la película te aburra porque estas tramas perturbadoras llaman la atención porque generalmente no sabes como va a ser su final.
As for the ending, personally, it was unexpected. I could have imagined it, but honestly, I didn't see it as feasible. It was a good ending, the one I expected given the story. The acting is quite good. Anson Boon absolutely nailed his performance, showing anger, rage, resignation, love, and heartbreak. Stephen Graham is a top-notch actor, but I want to highlight Andrea Riseborough. As I mentioned, I think her character is the most broken. She's very passive-aggressive, which makes her more unsettling and frightening, even though you'll eventually come to understand her. I'm not saying that you have to justify what she does, but I think part of the film's central question is whether or not you can empathize with these people. In conclusion, we have a great thriller where the human mind and its workings are key. It's captivating and intriguing. Highly recommended if you like the genre; it's almost two hours of unsettling and surreal behavior. I've included the trailer below. En cuanto a su final en lo personal fue inesperado, podía imaginármelo pero la realidad es que no lo veía factible. Fue un bue final, el esperado dada la historia. Las actuaciones son bastante buenas, Hablar de Anson Boon es decir que realmente la clavó con su interpretación, ira, rabia, resignación, amor, quiebre; todo eso lo mostró. Stephen Graham es un actor muy top pero acá destaco a Andrea Riseborough. Como les dije creo que su personaje es el más destrozado, es muy pasivo/agresivo lo que hace que genere más incomodidad y "miedo" a pesar de que vas a terminar por entenderlo. Con esto no digo que al final hay que justificar lo que hace pero creo que parte del tema de conversación de este film es que si se puede empatizar con esta gente o no. En conclusión tenemos un gran thriller en donde la mente humana y su funcionamiento será lo clave. Es atrapante e intrigante. Muy recomendado si les gusta el género, son casi dos horas de comportamientos inquietantes y surrealistas.
