For fourteen days this October, we have been discussing the horror genre—a genre both loved and loathed by many. Today, we turn our attention to a 2020 film—a year defined by the pandemic and lockdowns. This context is crucial, as the movie revolves around that very situation: the necessity of social distancing and the shift to online gatherings. The film was made on a budget of approximately $100,000—though some sources cite an even lower figure. This is significant because the story grossed $450,000—nearly five times its budget—suggesting it is a truly excellent film. But is it? Yes; it is a movie that captures the essence of horror to absolute perfection.
Catorce días de este mes de octubre que llevamos hablando de este género tan querido y odiado por muchos como lo es el terror. El día de hoy lo haremos con un film del año 2020, aquel que estuvo marcado por la pandemia y el confinamiento y digo esto porque el contexto de la película tiene que ver con ese detalle, el de estar todos a distancia y que las reuniones fueran de manera online. Estamos hablando que este film tuvo un presupuesto de aproximadamente 100 mil dólares aunque otras fuentes hablan de una cifra mucho más corta. Esto es importante porque esta historia casi quintuplicó sus ganancias con 450 mil dólares dándonos a entender que es un film realmente bueno. Pero, lo es? - si, es una película que capta a la perfección absoluta el significado del terror.
In the midst of the COVID pandemic, six friends decide to cure their boredom by holding an online séance via a Zoom call. Haley, the organizer, contacts a medium to guide them through the ritual and ensure nothing strange or unsettling happens. Everyone is instructed to take the session very seriously; disrespecting the spirits or failing to treat the process with gravity could be dangerous. However, as often happens in groups, there are a couple of pranksters; one of them, Jemma, decides to mock the situation by making up a story to scare the others—unaware that this would be a grave mistake. The reason this is forbidden is that such behavior invites in malevolent, deceptive spirits; it is akin to opening a door to the unknown—one that, as they are about to discover, proves very difficult to close.
Estamos en plena pandemia del COVID y están estos seis amigos que deciden matar el aburrimiento haciendo una sesión espiritista de manera online a través de una llamada por Zoom. Haley, la organizadora de todo, contacta a una médium para que los guie en este viaje/ritual y así no pasen cosas raras y extrañas. Una de las cosas que se les pide a todos es que se tomen la sesión muy en serio, faltarle el respeto a los espíritus o no tomárselos en serio puede ser peligroso. Pero como casi siempre pasa hay par de graciosos en los grupos y una de ellas, Jemma, decide inventar una historia en modo de burla para que los demás se asusten sin saber que aquello sería un error garrafal. La explicación del por que esto no se puede hacer es que con esas actitudes estarían invitando a espíritus falsos y malignos, es como abrir una puerta a lo desconocido la cual y como ellas mismas vivirán, será muy difícil de cerrar.
Once all this is done, the experience turns into a total nightmare. Unexplained events begin to occur in the homes of all the friends involved; poltergeist activity takes center stage, and terror grips each of them. This is where the fear and suspense truly kick in; we watch as these five friends—since a sixth dropped out of the call—must survive a demonic presence that stalks them relentlessly. The first thing to note is that the film is shot in a video-call format; rather than having a camera crew filming the scenes, the perspective we see is that of each girl through her laptop. This makes the experience more immersive and "real"—there are genuinely moments where it feels as though we are right there with them, living through the terror they are enduring. As I mentioned at the start, this film is the perfect example of how you don't need massive visual effects to connect with the audience; creating the right atmosphere is more than enough.
Una vez hecho todo esto la experiencia se transforma en una pesadilla total. En las casas de todas las amigas involucradas comienzan a pasar cosas inexplicables, los poltergeist toman un protagonismo total y el terror las invade a cada una de ellas. Es a partir de acá cuando el miedo y el suspenso arrancan, veremos como estas 5 amigas, porque un sexto se fue de la llamada, tendrán que sobrevivir a una presencia demoniaca que las acechará sin piedad. Lo primero que hay que decir es que la película está hecha en un formato de videollamada, es decir, no es que hay un set de cámaras alrededor de las escenas sino que el POV que vemos es el de cada una de ellas a través de sus laptops. Esto hace que la experiencia sea más inmersiva y "real", de verdad hay momentos en donde pareciera que estamos con ellas viviendo el terror que están padeciendo. Como dije al principio esta película es la muestra perfecta de que no se necesita grandes efectos visuales para saber llegarle al espectador, con crear el ambiente ideal es más que suficiente.
Despite being a "low-budget" film, it succeeds—in my opinion—in fulfilling the core premise of horror: maintaining tension and delivering scares. Host is a classic movie built on startles, jump scares, and paranormal activity, but not the run-of-the-mill kind; it doesn't rely on mere shadows and noises. Instead, the activity is violent, aggressive, and deeply menacing. All five friends are in real danger; the idea that a ghost or entity can't actually hurt you is a lie here, simply because we aren't dealing with a benevolent spirit, but a demon—a truly evil presence. There isn't really a complex plot; it is simply a story of pure survival. The film is actually very well executed; I expected to find it annoying or boring, but that couldn't have been further from the truth. There are no major plot twists either—the story is very straightforward, which is precisely why it works so well.
Y es que a pesar de ser un film de "bajo presupuesto", según yo cumple con la premisa del terror: mantener la tensión y asustar. Host es la típica película de sobresaltos, jumpscare y actividad paranormal, pero no de una cualquiera, no es esa de la que se manifiesta con sombras y ruidos; es la violenta, la que se hace notar y la que es profundamente amenazante. Todas las cinco amigas corren peligro real, eso de que un fantasma o entidad no te puede hacer daño es mentira básicamente porque acá no estamos ante un espíritu bueno, es una demonio, una presencia maligna. Trama no hay, es simplemente supervivencia pura. La verdad es que está muy bien lograda la película, pensé que la iba a encontrar fastidiosa y que me iba a aburrir pero nada que ver. Tampoco hay grandes plot twit, la historia es muy directa, por eso creo que funciona tan bien.
Regarding the performances, they are incredible. The terror is truly visible in the faces and acting of the five friends (Haley, Emma, Radina, Jemma, and Caroline). They all go through moments of being tormented by this demon—scenes filled with fear and tension. When I speak of violence, I’m referring to a couple of things: the nature of the entity and what is actually shown on screen. The physical violence feels very real; while sometimes explicit, at other times it is left to the imagination, allowing us to construct the horror in our own minds. I particularly enjoyed it because it delivers exactly what I look for in a horror movie: genuine scares, compelling suspense, and a paranormal element that is well-executed and effective. I highly recommend it; fans of the genre will love it. One detail: it runs for less than an hour, and I think that brevity is precisely why it feels so direct. It has a great ending—sharp and straight to the point. I’ve included the trailer below.
Hablando un poco de las actuaciones decir que están increíbles. El terror es algo que realmente se ve en las caras y en las interpretaciones de las cinco amigas (Haley, Emma, Radina, Jemma y Caroline). Todas transitan por momentos en donde sufren el acoso de este demonio los cuales están llenos de miedo y tensión. Cuando hablo de violencia me refiero a par de cosas, a la naturaleza de la entidad y a lo que se ve en pantalla; la violencia física es muy real, en algunos casos es explicita pero en otros toca imaginársela lo que ayuda a que construyamos el terror según nuestra mente. Particularmente la disfruté bastante porque es lo que espero de una película de terror, que asuste, que el suspenso sea interesante y que lo paranormal esté hecho con cabeza y sea efectivo. La super recomiendo, a los fanáticos del género les va a gustar. Un dato: dura menos de una hora, creo que por ser tan corta es que termina siendo tan directa. Tiene un buen final, preciso y al grano. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.
