A veces pienso que uno es masoquista al buscar ver cosas que sabemos casi que a ciencia cierta no nos va a gustar ni convencer pero igual ahí estamos, fieles a la curiosidad cinéfila por descubrir nuevas producciones. "I Came By" o en español "Yo estuve aquí" es un nuevo thriller que nos trae Netflix de la mano de Hugh Bonneville, un actor que se dio a conocer por la serie Downton Abbey y que en esta ocasión llega para ser el personaje siniestro de esta historia que no es mala pero que sin dudas tiene sus cosas que hacen que flaqueen un poco cuando pretendemos analizar toda la trama y su desarrollo.

Sometimes I think one is masochistic to seek to see things that we know almost for sure we will not like or convince us but still there we are, faithful to the cinephile curiosity to discover new productions. "I Came By" or in Spanish "Yo estuve aquí" is a new thriller that Netflix brings us from the hand of Hugh Bonneville, an actor who became known for the series Downton Abbey and that this time comes to be the sinister character of this story that is not bad but certainly has its things that make it falter a little when we try to analyze the whole plot and its development.

Basicamente es una historia en donde el suspenso es el principal ingrediente, donde esa zozobra constante por lo que pueda pasar es constante y que en varias oportunidades te sorprende al punto de decir una que otra palabrota porque no te esperabas lo que iba a pasar. No es la película más digna de Netflix ni mucho menos pero si tengo que decir que me entretuvo más de la cuenta, por aquello que uno es masoquista y la verdad no esperaba eso. Y no lo esperaba por par de razones, porque es Netflix y porque estamos ante un genero el cual es sumamente complicado de lograr. Pero bueno, a lo que vinimos y hablemos un poco de este nuevo thriller.

Basically it is a story where suspense is the main ingredient, where that constant anxiety about what might happen is constant and that on several occasions surprises you to the point of saying a word or two because you did not expect what was going to happen. It is not the most worthy Netflix movie by far but I have to say that it entertained me more than it should have, because one is a masochist and the truth is that I did not expect that. And I didn't expect it for a couple of reasons, because it's Netflix and because we are facing a genre which is extremely complicated to achieve. But well, what we came to and let's talk a little of this new thriller.

La historia se centra en un par de jóvenes Toby (George Mackay) y Jay (Percellle Ascott) quienes son grafiteros urbanos y lo único que hacen es ir a las casas de las personas de clase alta, adineradas y con cierto status y hacer un grafiti dentro de las propiedades solo para demostrar que pudieron burlar la seguridad y también porque existe cierto resentimiento hacia esas personas el cual viene dado por la forma de pensar de uno de ellos. La cosa es que todo se complica cuando en una de esas casas Toby descubre un secreto muy perturbador, uno que le traerá muchos problemas y eventualmente peligros a las personas más cercanas a él.

The story centers on a couple of young men Toby (George Mackay) and Jay (Percellle Ascott) who are urban graffiti artists and all they do is go to the homes of upper class, wealthy and status people and graffiti inside the properties just to show that they were able to circumvent security and also because there is some resentment towards those people which comes from the way of thinking of one of them. The thing is that everything gets complicated when in one of those houses Toby discovers a very disturbing secret, one that will bring many problems and eventually dangers to the people closest to him.

La casa en cuestión le pertenece a Hector Blake (Hugh Bonneville), un juez retirado que vive su vida tranquilo y que de pronto toda esa tranquilidad se verá quebrantada gracias a este par de muchachos. A partir de acá la trama se centrará en descubrir que es lo que Blake oculta en su sótano, que fue aquello que dejó sin palabras a Toby y como de repente todo pasa a palabras mayores hasta el punto que la misma policía comienza a hacer preguntas y sospechar de aquel juez que en teoría es una persona respetada en las altas esferas de la sociedad. Pero como no todo lo que brilla es oro pronto la misma trama nos llevará a un viaje en donde se descubrirán cosas turbias que estaban escondidas en el pasado.

The house in question belongs to Hector Blake (Hugh Bonneville), a retired judge who lives his life quietly and suddenly all that tranquility will be broken thanks to this pair of boys. From here the plot will focus on discovering what Blake is hiding in his basement, what was it that left Toby speechless and how suddenly everything goes to big words to the point that the police themselves begin to ask questions and suspect the judge who in theory is a respected person in the upper echelons of society. But as all that glitters is not gold, soon the same plot will take us on a journey where shady things that were hidden in the past will be discovered.

Al ser un thriller claramente lo que reina es el suspenso perenne que hay durante casi toda la película, digo casi porque esta comienza un poco lenta, al principio lo que vemos es como una presentación de los personajes, sus contextos de vida lo que hará que entendamos un poco mejor la forma de ser y de actuar de cada uno. Ya conforme van pasando los minutos la trama se va volviendo un poco más entretenida porque nos vamos metiendo en el problema de lleno, una que los mantendrá con los ojos abiertos y atentos a todo lo que pueda pasar porque si, hay un par de escenas que logran que el espectador tenga esa reacción de asombro/susto al ser algo que obviamente nos agarra desprevenidos, esas cosas aunque puedan ser clichés se agradecen.

Being a thriller clearly what reigns is the perennial suspense that there is during almost the entire film, I say almost because it starts a little slow, at first what we see is like a presentation of the characters, their life contexts which will make us understand a little better the way of being and acting of each one. As the minutes go by the plot becomes a little more entertaining because we are getting into the problem fully, one that will keep you with your eyes open and attentive to everything that can happen because yes, there are a couple of scenes that make the viewer have that reaction of astonishment / shock to be something that obviously catches us off guard, those things although they may be clichés are appreciated.

Pero como toda película de este estilo tiene sus cosas que hay que ver con pinzas, sorprendentemente mi critica no va dirigida al fondo de la trama sino a la forma, porque el suspenso está, la intriga está; es lo que hacen los involucrados para que la tensión suba o no o para darle más vida a la historia. Hay situaciones muy obvias en donde una persona pensante y con sentido común actuaría de tal forma, el tema es que acá ese sentido común tal parece que no existe y es cuando se aplica ese dicho "solo pasa en las películas", por lo menos a mi me sacan un poco del "mood" cuando pasan esas cosas porque le quitan credibilidad y peso a la trama.

But like any film of this style has its things that must be seen with tweezers, surprisingly my criticism is not directed to the bottom of the plot but to the form, because the suspense is there, the intrigue is there; it is what those involved do to make the tension rise or not or to give more life to the story. There are very obvious situations where a thinking person with common sense would act in such a way, the issue is that here that common sense does not seem to exist and that is when the saying "it only happens in the movies" applies, at least to me they take me out of the "mood" when these things happen because they take away credibility and weight to the plot.

En cuanto a los personajes podemos hablar de Hugh Bonneville. Es un personaje bastante oscuro el cual es movido por sucesos y traumas de su pasado que lo dejaron marcado y que dichas heridas psicológicas como que dictan el camino por el que él transita en su vida, son cosas que lógicamente no ha superado y eso hace que esas frustraciones las paguen otras personas. Siento que es el típico psicópata, el promedio de todas las películas en donde su vida es una fachada y que debajo del traje de la amabilidad se esconde un verdadero monstruo, uno que si no es molestado pues seguirá haciendo sus atrocidades. Buena actuación de Hugh, por lo menos decente es, no hizo falta tener una actitud hostil ni violenta en exceso para parecer un completo sociópata.

As for the characters we can talk about Hugh Bonneville. He is a rather dark character who is moved by events and traumas of his past that left him marked and that these psychological wounds kind of dictate the path he follows in his life, they are things that logically he has not overcome and that makes those frustrations to be paid by other people. I feel that he is the typical psychopath, the average of all movies where his life is a facade and that under the suit of kindness hides a real monster, one that if he is not disturbed then he will continue to do his atrocities. Hugh's performance is good, at least decent, he didn't need to have a hostile or violent attitude in excess to look like a complete sociopath.

Los dos jóvenes son los típicos rebeldes que cuando las cosas se le vienen encima sale a flote su verdadera personalidad, muy duros por fuera pero al final son cobardes con problemas familiares. Uno de ellos es el que está en contra de todo, del sistema y de aquello que se le quiere imponer, el otro es un poco más centrado pero por circunstancias que le tocó vivir. Pero la mamá de uno de ellos, Lizzie (Kelly Macdonald) es la que más drama le inyecta a la historia, una mamá que es psicóloga y que a su vez tiene que lidiar con muchas cosas entre ellas la indiferencia de su hijo es como una paradoja la verdad. El actuar de ella, movido por el amor de una madre, es el que cuestiono, cosas muy obvias que fueron mal hechas pero que ella dentro de su mundo las veía necesarias de hacer. No estuvo terrible pero si para mi fue el punto débil de esta trama.

The two young men are the typical rebels that when things come down on them their true personality comes out, very tough on the outside but in the end they are cowards with family problems. One of them is the one who is against everything, against the system and against what they want to impose on him, the other one is a little more centered but due to circumstances that he had to live. But the mother of one of them, Lizzie (Kelly Macdonald) is the one who injects more drama to the story, a mother who is a psychologist and who in turn has to deal with many things including the indifference of his son is like a paradox the truth. Her actions, moved by a mother's love, is what I question, very obvious things that were done wrong but that she saw them as necessary in her world. It wasn't terrible but for me it was the weak point of this plot.

En general una película más decente de lo que pensé pero que aún como que no me terminó de convencer del todo. La historia es muy buena, siempre los problemas psicológicos llevados al extremo pueden ser muy llamativos por muy terrible que eso suene, hay un suspenso que hace el trabajo, de eso no me quejo y unas actuaciones bastante promedios, nada extraordinario. Otra vez Netflix sacando un producto por sacarlo y ya está. Le doy un 7/10 porque se puede ver, te entretiene, te llegas a sobresaltar un poco y porque es la típica película para verla un domingo en la tarde. Dura menos de dos horas. Les dejo el tráiler para que le echen un ojo.

Overall a more decent film than I thought it would be, but still not quite convincing. The story is very good, always the psychological problems taken to the extreme can be very striking as terrible as that sounds, there is a suspense that does the job, I'm not complaining about that and some pretty average performances, nothing extraordinary. Again Netflix putting out a product for the sake of putting it out and that's it. I give it a 7/10 because it's watchable, it entertains you, you get to be a little startled and because it's the typical movie to watch on a Sunday afternoon. It lasts less than two hours.
