Two things caught my attention before I sat down to watch this film: the first is that it's set during one of the many battles of World War II, a subject I'm a huge fan of, and the second is because of two of the actors in it: Scott Eastwood and Colin Hanks, yes, the sons of Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks, respectively. Knowing that we were going to be in the middle of a war, I could already imagine the themes, but what I wasn't at all sure about was the acting quality of these two men whose surnames are quite prestigious, immense, I would say. Obviously, it's a mistake to give them such a heavy burden, but unfortunately, it's noteworthy, which is why I ended up watching the film.
Hay dos cosas que me llamaron la atención antes de sentarme a ver esta película: la primera es que está ambientada en una de las tantas batallas que se dieron durante la segunda guerra mundial, tema del que soy muy fanático, y la segunda es por dos de los actores que hacen vida en este film. Scott Eastwood y Colin Hanks, si, los hijos de Clint Eastwood y Tom Hanks respectivamente. Al ver que íbamos a estar en plena guerra ya la temática la podía imaginar pero lo que no tenía nada claro era el como iba a ser la calidad actoral de estos dos hombres cuyos apellidos son bastante grandes, inmensos diría yo. Obviamente es un error darles semejante carga pero lamentablemente llama la atención, por algo terminé viendo el film.
This time, we find ourselves in the forests of Belgium during what would be one of Hitler's last attempts to rewrite history and what was already practically a foregone conclusion: his defeat. The Battle of the Bulge lasted less than a month and was a resounding failure for the Nazis, partly due to the United States Army. Captain John Castle (Scott Eastwood), along with his men, was tasked with demolishing bridges and clearing roadblocks to halt the German advance. In an ambush, Castle finds himself alone in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by the entire army of the Third Reich and the SS, who were even more ruthless than the soldiers themselves. An unexpected situation from which he will have to find a way to survive.
En esta ocasión nos encontramos en los bosques de Bélgica en lo que sería uno de los últimos intentos de Hitler por tratar de torcer la historia y de lo que ya estaba prácticamente hecho, su derrota. La batalla de las Ardenas duró menos de un mes y fue un verdadero fracaso para los nazi y parte de esa derrota se le debe al ejercito de Estados Unidos. El capitán John Castle, (Scott Eastwood), juntos a sus hombres eran los encargados de la demolición de puentes y obstrucciones de carreteras para frenar la avanzada alemana. En una emboscada Castle queda solo en medio de la nada y rodeado por todo el ejercito del tercer Reich y de las SS, quienes eran peores que los propios soldados. Una situación inesperada y de la que él tendrá que buscar la manera de sobrevivir.
Having to fight his way through enemy lines is incredibly difficult, but it's thanks to his desire to return home to his family, his training, and an old radio that he'll be able to complete the mission. For a war film, it felt short to me, just over an hour and a half, during which we see John confront the Nazis, fight for his life, and save others. This captain practically dominates the screen time because, in addition to showing us the brutality of war, the plot also transforms into a kind of survival thriller amidst a minefield, tanks, and gunfire. This is the third World War II film I've seen in a short time, all this year; I'd previously seen Nuremberg and Pressure, and I must say all three are decent, some better than others, but all quite acceptable.
Tener que hacerse camino al mismo tiempo de estar entre líneas enemigas es algo muy complicado pero será gracias al deseo de volver a casa con su familia, de su entrenamiento y de una vieja radio es que podrán completar la misión. Para ser una película con temática bélica para mi fue corta, un poco más de hora y media, tiempo en el que veremos a John hacer frente a los nazis, pelear por su vida y salvar a otras vidas. Prácticamente la totalidad del tiempo en pantalla se lo lleva este capitán porque además de mostrarnos la crudeza de una guerra también la trama se transforma en una especie de thriller de supervivencia en medio de un campo lleno de minas, taques y disparos. Esta es la tercera película que veo en poco tiempo, todas este año, de la segunda guerra mundial, antes había visto Nuremberg y Pressure y debo decir que las tres cumplen, una más que otra, pero son bastante aceptables.
What I'm noticing is that the focus has shifted; it's no longer the typical action-packed plot. Now it seems they're searching for those stories out there that might be interesting to tell and show because, of course, it's all based on real events. Watching a captain try to survive thanks to a radio and a cigarette is epic. The cigarette storyline is about the well-known brand Lucky Strike. When I say a cigarette saves a life, it's because something happens in the plot that allows Castle to live another day. It would be a spoiler to say more, but yes, it's incredibly interesting how handling a cigarette can change someone's fate. The film is gritty, as expected; there's no gore, but there are deaths and injuries, and it clearly portrays the absolute evil of the Nazis. I'll always say it: if they kill Nazis, I'm going to see it.
Lo que me estoy dando cuenta es que el enfoque ha cambiado, ya no es la trama típica llena de acción; ahora pareciera que están buscando esas historias que hay por ahí que pueden ser interesantes de contar y mostrar porque claro, todo esto es basado en hechos reales. Ver como un capitán busca sobrevivir gracias a una radio y un cigarro es épico. La historia del cigarro es por la marca conocida Lucky Strike. Cuando digo que un cigarro salva una vida es porque en la trama pasa algo que le permite a Castle contar con otro día de vida. Sería spoiler hablar de más pero si, super interesante como el manejo de un cigarro puede cambiar el destino de alguien. El film es crudo, como es de esperarse, no hay gore pero si muertes y heridos además de dejar en claro la maldad absoluta de los nazi. Siempre lo voy a decir: película en donde maten a nazis, película que voy a ver.
What didn't I like? - The limited screen time Colin Hanks had. His role, completely random and superficial for the purposes of the plot, wasn't relevant, and therefore we didn't get to see much of him acting. The truth is, I don't really know how good an actor he is, but I would have liked to find out. As for Scott Eastwood, well, we have an average, normal performance; I didn't see anything extraordinary, even though he's 85% of the film. Good drama, good war scenes, and I liked the twist that happens near the end with the cigar story; I think it's a very cool anecdote, if it actually happened. It's not the best film in this genre, but it's quite watchable. Recommended especially for fans of this type of film, and for those who aren't, no worries, it's still enjoyable. Que no me gustó? - el poco tiempo que se vio a Colin Hanks. Su papel, uno totalmente random y superficial para efectos de la trama, no fue relevante y por tanto y no se pudo ver mucho de él actuando. La verdad es que tampoco se que tan buen actor es pero me hubiese gustado averiguarlo. En cuanto a Scott Eastwood pues tenemos una actuación promedio, normal, no vi nada extraordinario a pesar de que la película es en un 85% él solo. Buen drama, buenas escenas de guerra y me gustó el giro que ocurre casi al final con la historia de los cigarros, creo que es una anécdota muy cool, en caso de que en efecto haya ocurrido. Tampoco es la mejor película de este género pero si es bastante pasable. Recomendada sobretodo para los fanáticos de esta temática y los que no pues no pasa nada, igual es disfrutable.
