Hello friends, good vibes to everyone.

Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.

We’ve spent the past week talking exclusively about horror during this "spooky season," and we’ll keep doing so until the month ends. It’s amazing how many scattered films out there are considered classics—or at least "must-watch" movies—that I’ve never actually had the chance to sit down and see. That’s something I plan to change, so today we’re going to talk about Malignant, a 2021 film directed by the renowned James Wan, creator of major hits like The Conjuring and Annabelle. It’s a story that starts out seeming like one thing but ends up being something entirely different; I think that journey through horror and the shift in direction make the film fascinating to watch.

Madison (Annabelle Wallis) is the protagonist. She lives with her partner and has managed to conceive for the third time, following the loss of her two previous pregnancies. Theirs is an unstable relationship in which she is a victim of domestic violence. Everything begins after she suffers a blow to the head—the result of being shoved by the man she lives with; from that point on, Madison starts experiencing deeply disturbing visions of murders, and her daily life is disrupted by an apparent presence haunting her home. This entity is a mysterious, deformed figure possessing superhuman strength that—as previously mentioned—begins to torment Madison in increasingly violent and intrusive ways.

The thing is, this figure is deeply connected to Madison's past—bound to her in a very strange way. And the problem arises because this entity can see everything she does—specifically the murders—which brings the police into the picture, with a pair of detectives playing a role in the story as well. So, it’s not just about the mystery and suspense surrounding this "thing" on the loose, or the film's graphic violence; there is also a significant detective-thriller element at play. Ultimately, the story is about uncovering what is tormenting Madison and others, all while she tries to survive the entity. One of the film's strengths is how well it blends those aforementioned elements; it kicks off on a high note with intense tension and expertly crafted suspense—including well-executed jump scares—establishing a clear paranormal tone. While that tone doesn't remain constant throughout, it certainly generates a great deal of intrigue.

What is the problem with this movie? It’s a matter of execution—or form—because, for me, the underlying concept isn't bad at all. I can't go into too much detail or explain further without dropping a massive spoiler, but the issue is that the entity's actions don't make much sense to me, considering who it is or where it comes from. I think they overplayed its presence; consequently, once the full truth is revealed, the way the character was built up loses some of its impact. That doesn't mean the film is bad or not worth watching; I think the gore, visual effects, graphic nature, and—above all—the suspense surrounding the hooded figure's appearances are of acceptable quality. The plot's progression—the way the story unravels—is full of intrigue, as everything isn't revealed until the very end; I can tell you that throughout the movie, you'll be wondering what is actually going on. And for me, that holds real value; it makes for an entertaining watch and keeps you from getting bored.

Annabelle Wallis is a veteran of horror and suspense cinema; she appeared in Annabelle, The Mummy (2017), and the recently released Netflix series Unabomber. She does a great job here, portraying a tormented woman who has endured endless hardships—including three pregnancy losses—and is now being hunted by whatever is stalking her. She effortlessly conveys terror, drama, and desperation. The film rests entirely on her shoulders; the supporting cast contributes little to nothing, especially the police officers. The "useless movie cop" cliché is a real thing, but these officers take it to a whole new level—it’s astounding just how incompetent they are. Ultimately, while the script and the presentation of the anomaly have their flaws, it remains a solid film. It may not be James Wan’s best work, but it’s a perfectly fine way to pass the time during the Halloween season. It has a runtime of nearly two hours. I’ve included the trailer below so you can check it out.
