I think it's no secret that Jason Statham is one of the best action actors in Hollywood, not so much because of the movies themselves, but because the guy really knows how to fight (kickboxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, karate, taekwondo, etc.) are some of the disciplines he handles with great skill. All of this makes watching his films a must, because maybe they won't be Oscar-worthy, but I can guarantee you'll be entertained. Mutiny is his most recent film, and it's driven by his usual and most effective formula: revenge. I'm telling you, this hour-and-a-half film is EVERYTHING you expect from a Statham movie, nothing more, nothing less. And well, around here we're big fans of a well-executed revenge.
Creo que para nadie es un secreto que Jason Statham es uno de los mejores actores de acción que tiene Hollywood, no tanto por las películas en si que hace sino porque el tipo realmente sabe pelear (Kickboxing, jiu-jitsu brasileño, karate, taekwondo, etc) son algunas de las disciplinas que maneja con mucha destreza. Todo esto hace que ver sus films sean una obligación porque a lo mejor no serán los dignos de un Oscar pero te puedo garantizar que te vas a entretener. Mutiny es la más reciente de sus películas y es una cuyo motor es el de siempre y el más efectivo: la venganza. Ya te digo que este film de hora y media es TODO lo que esperas de una película de Statham, ni más ni menos. Y bueno, por acá somos fanáticos de que una venganza bien aplicada.
Cole Reed works as a private security guard, a sort of bodyguard for a Thai billionaire. His relationship with this man is almost paternal, as Reed lost his own father, so there's a bond between them that goes beyond business. Before this job, Cole was a police officer, and before that, a Marine. He excelled everywhere he went, always at the top of his game, so you can imagine his ability to handle things. One night, after a gala, Tibu, the boss, is killed in an ambush, and despite everything, Reed couldn't save him. The problem is, this might be bigger than it seems, to the point that he's framed and forced to go on the run. But will he just stand idly by? I can tell you right now, no.
Cole Reed es un hombre que se desempeña como seguridad privada, es una especie de guardaespaldas de un multimillonario tailandés. La relación que tiene con este hombre es casi paternal ya que Reed perdió a su padre por lo que entre ellos hay un cariño más allá de los negocios. Antes de este trabajo Cole era policía y antes de eso fue un marine, en todos lados resaltó y fue el mejor por lo que ya se imaginarán la capacidad que tiene para hacerse cargo de las cosas. Una noche, después de una gala, Tibu, el jefe, es asesinado en una emboscada en la que Reed a pesar de todo, no pudo salvarlo. El tema es que esto puede que sea más grande de lo que parece al punto de que lo incriminan por lo que le toca huir. Pero, se quedará con los brazos cruzados? - ya les digo que no.
As the plot unfolds, we realize this is a large-scale conspiracy involving many people. Reed must enter the "lion's den"—in this case, a cargo ship—to uncover what's really going on. As I mentioned, this film is everything you'd expect from a story where a Jason Statham character is possessed and his only desire is to annihilate those who have wronged loved ones or himself. We know this plot is practically 100% of his films, but for some strange reason, they always work, some more than others, but they always deliver. And why? Because revenge sells, but getting paid sells even more, and if there's anyone who's an expert at that, it's Statham.
A medida que avanza la trama nos damos cuenta de que esto es una conspiración a gran escala en la que muchas personas están involucradas. Reed deberá entrar en la "boca del lobo", en este caso un barco de carga, para así descubrir que es lo que realmente está pasando. Como ya les comenté esta película es todo lo esperable de una historia en donde un personaje de Jason Statham está endemoniado y lo unico que quiere es aniquilar a las personas que le hicieron daño a personas cercanas o él mismo. Estamos claros que esta trama es casi el 100% de sus películas pero por alguna extraña razón siempre funcionan, unas más que otras, pero al final siempre cumplen. Y por que? - pues porque precisamente la venganza vende mucho pero cobrarla vende más y si hay alguien experto en ese trabajo es Statham.
This particular film takes place almost entirely on a cargo ship in the middle of the ocean. This means all the action is concentrated in a confined space, making it easy for chaos to ensue. Add to that the fact that spaces on a ship are quite small, and the action is mostly hand-to-hand, which is decent. There are the typical fights with all sorts of weapons and objects, gunshots, punches; all the ingredients for effective action. The plot isn't boring, but it is very basic; everyone who watches it will probably know how it all ends. Negative points? I've always said that for this type of film, you shouldn't focus too much on scripts or dialogue, but it's true that the villains in this story are incredibly inept. There are details that are easily overlooked, details that even a 12-year-old would notice. I think that's the only negative point I would make; a little more effort to put up a fight would have been nice.
Este film en particular se lleva a cabo en un 90% en un buque de carga en medio del mar. Esto hace que toda la acción se concentre en un espacio reducido por lo que el caos es muy fácil que reine. Si a esto le sumamos que de por si los lugares en un barco son bastante pequeños la acción es cuerpo a cuerpo y en ese aspecto está decente. Hay las típicas peleas con todo tipo de armas y objetos, disparos, golpes; todos los ingredientes para que la acción funcione. La trama no es aburrida pero si es super básica, seguramente todo el que la vea va a saber como terminará todo. Cosas negativas? - siempre he dicho que para este tipo de films no hay que fijarse tanto en guiones ni diálogos, pero si que es verdad que los malos de esta historia pecan de inútiles pero por mucho, hay detalles que se pasan por alto los cuales hasta un niño de 12 años se fijaría. Creo que es el único punto negativo que le pondría, un poco más de esfuerzo para poner resistencia hubiese estado bien.
Statham is joined by Annabelle Wallis, the same actress from Peaky Blinders, in a role where she's his right-hand woman on the ship. Her performance isn't particularly impressive, but it does help prevent the film from being a Jason monologue. Acting and Statham don't belong in the same sentence; what is worth appreciating is how visually appealing he still is in this type of film despite being 59 years old, and the answer is simple: very much so. He's a guarantee of entertainment and good action scenes; he's an actor of this genre, and you shouldn't expect anything deeper. The film is what it is: an action thriller where revenge is a dish best served cold. Don't expect anything else. If you're looking to wake up a bit and kill some boredom, I recommend it. A Stathan lo acompaña Annabelle Wallis, la misma de Peaky Blinders, en un rol en donde será su mano derecha dentro del barco. Nada impresionable su actuación pero si ayuda a que el film no sea un monologo de Jason. Actuación y Statham no caben en la misma oración, lo que si hay que valorar es que tan vistoso sigue siendo para este tipo de películas a pesar de sus 59 años y la respuesta es simple: mucho, todavía. Es garantía de entretenimiento y buenas escenas de acción, es un actor de ese género y no hay que pedirle nada más profundo. La película es lo que es, un thriller de acción en donde la venganza se sirve en un plato frío, no esperen otra cosa. Para despertarse un poco y matar el aburrimiento, se las recomiendo.
