Uno de los directores que sin duda ha logrado revolucionar todo lo que es el mundo del terror hoy en día es Jordan Peele. Primero lo hizo con aquella película, una que lo llevó a ganarse un Oscar, "Get Out" esa que habla del racismo en Estados Unidos pero con el toque terrorífico de Peele y su segundo titulo "Us" que también dio mucho de que hablar al momento de su estreno. Sabiendo todo esto mi curiosidad era más que obvia por querer ver este nuevo trabajo de este director así que me tomé un poco más de dos horas para disfrutar de esta historia, una que por lo menos curiosa y un tanto extraña es.
One of the directors who has undoubtedly managed to revolutionize the world of horror today is Jordan Peele. First he did it with that film, one that won him an Oscar, "Get Out" that talks about racism in the United States but with Peele's terrifying touch and his second title "Us" that also gave a lot to talk about at the time of its release. Knowing all this my curiosity was more than obvious for wanting to see this new work of this director so I took a little more than two hours to enjoy this story, one that is at least curious and somewhat strange.
Por qué se llama Nope? - porque es una expresión usada en USA cuando no se quiere aceptar o reconocer que está sucediendo algo, es como una negación auto forzada o impuesta. Esto lo digo porque lógicamente en la película la usan muchísimo bajo el contexto que les acabo de decir por lo que al verla la entenderán mejor. Es un film que tiene unas altas dosis de escenas raras, perturbadoras, que más de una puede que te saquen un escalofrío, llenas a su vez de un suspenso latente en casi toda la película y por supuesto con el factor alienígena, extraterrestre o lo que sea que vemos sobre los cielos de aquellas tierras. Así que sin más hablemos un poco de lo que es esta nueva historia de Peele.
Why is it called Nope? - Because it is an expression used in the USA when you don't want to accept or recognize that something is happening, it is like a self forced or imposed denial. I say this because logically in the film they use it a lot under the context that I just told you, so when you see it you will understand it better. It is a film that has a high dose of weird, disturbing scenes, that more than one can make you shiver, filled in turn with a latent suspense in almost the entire film and of course with the alien factor, extraterrestrial or whatever we see over the skies of those lands. So without further ado, let's talk a little bit about what this new Peele story is all about.
La trama se centra en un rancho en Hayward, una pequeña localidad en California en donde las personas que allí viven se encargan de entrenar a caballos para que estos sean usados en Hollywood. A la cabeza de aquel lugar está OJ (Daniel Kaluuya) junto con su hermana Emerald (Keke Palmer) quienes son los encargados de que todo vaya en orden con el negocio de los caballos adiestrados. El tema es que un día totalmente al azar comienzan a suceder cosas un poco inexplicables y un tanto desconcertantes las cuales pueden llegar a afectar el comportamiento tanto de los animales como de las mismas personas, es algo que no se sabe a ciencia cierta que es pero que sin ninguna duda está en los alrededores de aquel lugar.
The plot centers on a ranch in Hayward, a small town in California where the people who live there are in charge of training horses to be used in Hollywood. At the head of that place is OJ (Daniel Kaluuya) along with his sister Emerald (Keke Palmer) who are in charge of making sure that everything goes smoothly with the horse training business. The thing is that one day totally random things begin to happen a little inexplicable and somewhat disconcerting which can affect the behavior of both the animals and the people themselves, is something that is not known for sure what it is but that no doubt is in the vicinity of that place.
En lo que empiezan a pasar esas cosas tal parece que no hay vuelta atrás y es allí en donde inicia la busqueda de respuestas de estos hermanos por descubrir que es lo que está inquietando a sus caballos y a la tranquilidad que supone vivir en un lugar tan apartado de las grandes ciudades y sobre todo de la gente. Poco a poco veremos como todo se va convirtiendo en una pesadilla en la que cada vez nuevos personajes van haciendo acto de presencia para formar parte de ella. Claro que la busqueda de esas respuestas tienen un trasfondo un poco enfocado hacia una critica social, como todas las películas de Peele que siempre tienen algo que decir, pero que obviamente no la comentaré por acá porque estaríamos cayendo un poco en spoilers.
Once these things begin to happen, it seems that there is no turning back and it is there where the search for answers begins for these brothers to discover what is disturbing their horses and the tranquility of living in a place so far away from the big cities and especially from the people. Little by little we will see how everything is becoming a nightmare in which new characters are making an appearance to be part of it. Of course, the search for those answers has a background a little focused on a social criticism, like all Peele's films that always have something to say, but obviously I will not comment here because we would be falling a little in spoilers.
Esta es una película que en lo personal me impactó más de lo que yo pensaba con algunas de sus escenas, el terror de Peele es uno que de por si extraño y abrumador pero la verdad es que tiene pasajes que si puede que te pongan los pelos de puntas y te generen uno que otro susto que no estaban en los planes, esa taquicardia que queda después de ver algo totalmente inesperado. Pues este es uno de los ingredientes que hacen que este film sea un poco incomodo de ver. No es algo que les va a sacar el alma del cuerpo pero si crea la sensación de urgencia de que alguna cosa va a suceder solo que no sabes por cual blanco va a aparecer ni de que forma lo hará, es una incertidumbre que se agradece mucho, son experiencias que hace que valga la pena ver estas películas.
This is a film that personally shocked me more than I thought with some of its scenes, Peele's terror is one that in itself is strange and overwhelming but the truth is that it has passages that can make your hair stand on end and generate one or another scare that were not in the plans, that tachycardia that remains after seeing something totally unexpected. Well, this is one of the ingredients that make this film a little uncomfortable to watch. It is not something that will take your soul out of your body but it does create a sense of urgency that something is going to happen, you just don't know which target will appear or how it will appear, it is an uncertainty that is very welcome, these are experiences that make it worth watching these films.
Otro gran placer que existe acá son las visuales y toda la cinematografía, hay unas escenas en particular en donde el terror es descrito de unas formas muy palpables que con solo ver lo que está pasando en la pantalla puedes llegar a saber y hasta sentir el nivel de horror que acompaña dichas escenas. Mucha sangre vemos aquí y su uso es vital para lo dicho anteriormente, este es un elemento importante para que una escena pase de ser desapercibida a una que realmente destaque como es el ejemplo de un par en donde sinceramente todo el encuadre es digno de un ben terror. Sin dudas Jordan Peele maneja muy bien estas características logrando unos muy buenos efectos visuales.
Another great pleasure that exists here are the visuals and all the cinematography, there are some scenes in particular where the terror is described in a very palpable way that just by seeing what is happening on the screen you can get to know and even feel the level of horror that accompanies these scenes. We see a lot of blood here and its use is vital for the above mentioned, this is an important element for a scene to go from being unnoticed to one that really stands out as is the example of a couple where honestly the whole framing is worthy of a ben terror. Undoubtedly Jordan Peele handles these characteristics very well, achieving very good visual effects.
La forma en la que es contada la historia también es curiosa porque es un film que está dividido como en capítulos en donde cada uno se centra en algo o alguien importante pata la trama lo que la hace por lo menos un poco más amena de ver. Esta va de dando brincos en el tiempo pero lo hace para dar contexto, sobre todo con uno de sus personajes, Ricky "Jupe" Park (Steven Yeun) quien es otro que es un poco relevante en esta historia pero por todo lo que hay detrás de él, es un personaje bastante curioso. En síntesis es una trama que no aburre, no es la más profunda y mejor planteada pero que si cumple con su función que para mi es la de que el espectador se ponga incomodo y disfrute un poco de lo inentendible e inexplicable.
The way the story is told is also curious because it is a film that is divided into chapters where each one focuses on something or someone important to the plot which makes it at least a little more enjoyable to watch. It jumps around in time but it does it to give context, especially with one of its characters, Ricky "Jupe" Park (Steven Yeun) who is another one that is a bit relevant in this story but for everything that is behind him, he is quite a curious character. In short, it is a plot that does not bore, it is not the deepest and best plot, but it fulfills its function, which for me is to make the viewer uncomfortable and enjoy a little of the incomprehensible and inexplicable.
En cuanto a los personajes como tal tenemos a OJ. Su rancho está pasando por momentos económicos un poco complicados por lo que deberá buscar maneras de hacer dinero como sea y es acá en donde entra esa critica social que mencioné anteriormente, todas estas historias tienen un trasfondo que hay que analizarlos un poco para caer en lo que el directo quiere decir. OJ es una persona entregada a su trabajo y a sus caballos pero con muy poca paciencia, hay que decir que Daniel acá no sobresale tanto como lo hizo en "Get Out" o en otros trabajos en donde si vimos buenas actuaciones, la actuación de esta película es bastante simple y plana y que cumple con lo justo.
As for the characters as such we have OJ. His ranch is going through economic times a little complicated so he must find ways to make money however he can and this is where the social criticism that I mentioned above comes in, all these stories have a background that must be analyzed a little to fall into what the direct wants to say. OJ is a person dedicated to his work and his horses but with very little patience, it must be said that Daniel here does not stand out as much as he did in "Get Out" or in other works where we did see good performances, the performance of this film is quite simple and flat and that meets just enough.
Por otro lado la que si puedo decir que destacó un poco más fue Keke Palamer. Un personaje con mucha carisma, que cuando la trama le pedía que fuera dura y aguerrida lo hacía y cuando era necesario el drama, la angustia y el suspenso también lo bordaba correctamente. Diría que es el personaje central de esta historia más allá que Daniel pueda ser considerado el protagonista principal. Es una persona que es muy parecida a su hermano en el sentido que sin importar qué tratarán de conseguir todo lo que se propongan sin importar todo lo que pueda pasar en el camino, son muy decididos y tercos. Y por último tenemos a Steven Yeun, un personaje secundario que está para darle un poco de particularidad a la historia, como les dije "Jupe" tiene un pasado perturbador que marcará su vida y su forma de ganársela.
On the other hand, the one that I can say that stood out a little more was Keke Palamer. A character with a lot of charisma, that when the plot asked her to be tough and tough she did it and when it was necessary the drama, anguish and suspense she also embroidered it correctly. I would say that he is the central character of this story beyond the fact that Daniel can be considered the main protagonist. He is a person who is very similar to his brother in the sense that no matter what they will try to achieve whatever they set their minds to no matter what may happen along the way, they are very determined and stubborn. And finally we have Steven Yeun, a secondary character who is there to give the story a little bit of particularity, as I told you "Jupe" has a disturbing past that will mark his life and his way of earning it.
Es una película que cumple medianamente con lo que propone, no es un mal producto solo que es diferente a lo que estamos acostumbrados a ver. Tampoco considero que sea el mejor trabajo de Peele pero se agradece que esta vez se haya arriesgado con una historia como las que nos trajo con NOPE, hablándonos de misterios y terror alienígena, eso siempre creo que llamará la atención. Tiene un buen suspenso, es un thriller decente con unas muy buenas escenas y unos efectos visuales sobresalientes que sin ninguna duda vale mucho la pena echarle un ojo.
It is a film that moderately complies with what it proposes, it is not a bad product, it is just different from what we are used to seeing. I don't consider it Peele's best work either, but it's appreciated that this time he took a risk with a story like the ones he brought us with NOPE, talking about mysteries and alien terror, I always think that will attract attention. It has a good suspense, it's a decent thriller with some very good scenes and outstanding visual effects that is definitely worth a watch.
Le doy un 7.5/10 por todo lo dicho anteriormente, me gustó pero no me atrapó del todo. La nota es por el esfuerzo en traer algo novedoso y por los grandes efectos visuales que podemos apreciar. Es un film que está disponible en los cines y tiene una duración de un poco más de dos horas. Como siempre les dejo el tráiler para que vean un poco de que va.
I give it a 7.5/10 for everything said above, I liked it but it didn't catch me completely. The note is for the effort to bring something new and for the great visual effects that we can appreciate. It is a film that is available in theaters and has a duration of just over two hours. As always I leave you the trailer so you can see a little of what it's about.

The director's career so far has become one string of films that make me go: just wth im looking at? And that is something alright, but i will lay expecting this one doesnt dissapoint me as im yet to see it, thank you for your review, i just added it to my list :)
The title is very creative. It also made me think why it is title this way the firs time I saw it.
I watched the trailer and it seems it's not a movie for me. Sorry, it's just a personal preference. 😊
Pues sí, no es la gran cosa, quizás hasta es un poco lenta, pero vale la pena para pasar el rato si tienes bastante tiempo libre, me gustó bastante el nuevo concepto que aplican respecto a los platillos voladores, de hecho sería bastante lógico ya que según en los relatos recogidos de antaño sobre los platillos voladores estos siempre estaban en zonas muy rurales como granjas y en vez de caballos también abducían vacas, ha de saber bien el bistec crudo xd.
Buen, yo soy miedosa no me gusta el terror para nada así que no sé que hago leyendo esto 😅, pero sé que el director por las pelis que nombras es un referente en el género, incluso quería atreverme a ver get out y us hace un tiempo, pero después se me pasó en la lista.
Pero para que tu veas lo que va a terminar de llamar mi atención es la historia de extraterrestres jajajaj porque eso sí me gusta y mucho de hecho vine a leer tu post porque vi la imagen e imaginé que trataba algo de eso, así que tal vez la película llame a esas masas extrañas que tal vez no habían visto las pelis anterior como yo 🙃🙃.
El problema de hacer películas muy buenas al principio es después seguir llenando esos zapatos, es complicado, pero por lo que cuentas la película es buena, solo que tal vez no tanto como las anteriores, sin embargo tal vez para otros amantes del terror si lo haya sido.

I haven't even seen the trailer, I like Jordan Peele's Get Out, but US was a disappointment for me, I didn't like it, I didn't like The Twilight Zone remake series either. I don't doubt the director's talent, but I'm not going to set high expectations. I'm still not going to see it, I've stayed away from spoilers and anything related to this movie.
