It is the sixth day of "spooky season" this October, a month-long challenge where the goal is to discuss a different horror movie every day. This has been a really cool experience; it allows me to catch up on films I’ve been meaning to watch, but—more importantly—it lets me truly appreciate the genre in all its forms. That brings me to the film in question: Oddity. We often equate horror solely with the supernatural—slashers, serial killers, demonic possessions, and the like—but that isn't always the case. This film shows us that human beings are capable of inspiring terror and distrust without necessarily being serial killers. It encourages us to view the genre from a fresh perspective, proving just how effective and impressive it can be. Oddity stands out as one of the best horror films of 2024, and that is the movie we’ll be discussing today.

First, we meet Dani and her husband, Ted, who were moving into an old house. One night, Dani is left alone—as Ted works the night shift—to continue her paranormal research. Tragically, she is brutally murdered that very night. As time passes, we are introduced to Darcy, her twin sister; Darcy is blind and a medium who owns an antique shop filled with cursed objects. Convinced that the full truth about Dani’s death has yet to come to light, she sets out to uncover exactly what happened the night her sister died. To do so, she relies on her own abilities and various objects that help her "see" what is not visible to the naked eye.

Ted—Dani’s husband and Darcy’s former brother-in-law—is a man of science, a doctor who understandably puts little stock in tales of the paranormal or the inexplicable; consequently, he is quite reluctant from the start to pursue that line of inquiry. Faced with his refusal, Darcy decides to show up at the house herself to investigate the matter more deeply. From that point on, the journey into mystery and suspense begins as they seek the truth. One of the objects Darcy uses to aid her investigation is a sort of carved wooden mannequin—an item that has been in the family for some time and possesses a deeply unsettling appearance. I have to say, this is one of the most disturbing films I’ve seen recently, and I believe that is its real hook: the pervasive sense of unease and its ability to keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish with incredible suspense and intrigue. Oddity proves that a film doesn't need to rely on common horror clichés to be effective.

One of the film's greatest strengths is its cinematic execution; it features expertly crafted scenes that deliver genuine scares—the jump scares are exceptionally well done. It blends the unsettling feeling of facing an unknown, incomprehensible entity with paranormal elements. But let me reiterate: this isn't about possessions or demons; it’s something more mystical. From the very beginning, the film establishes palpable suspense and tension; the atmosphere is heavy, keeping the audience constantly on edge. But if we’re discussing the intangible, what role do terrifying humans play? Well, the underlying story is deeply rooted in human behavior and the fact that we never truly know people; there is always a dark, twisted side that can surface when least expected. I found the plot twist incredible—I never imagined the story would take that direction—and I believe it is one of the film's major highlights.

The acting is excellent; Carolyn Bracken plays both sisters, and I think she pulls off both roles—especially Darcy—brilliantly. Darcy has a unique personality; she is sharp and perceptive despite her blindness, as her gift clearly helps her understand people better. A great deal of drama and mystery surrounds her, making her scenes fascinating to watch. On the other hand, there is Ted (played by Gwilym Lee), the typical narrow-minded, insolent guy—you really dislike him the moment you see him, though by the end of the film, you’ll better understand the reason for that feeling. His ending is great; it closes a cruel loop, and the way it plays out proves that fate—or karma—always catches up with you. Highly recommended; it’s not your traditional horror movie, but it is truly excellent—a work of high quality and brilliance. It’s directed by Damian McCarthy, the same filmmaker behind Hokum, another great horror movie from this year. It has a runtime of an hour and a half. I’ve included the trailer here.

Perhaps what stands out most is that it breaks away from the clichés of horror movies to present a different formula that works very well and captivates the audience. I like that the protagonist is a twin and investigates her sister’s death through paranormal phenomena. That’s why she’s able to immerse herself in this dark world and use various items from her store to uncover the truth.

This movie shows how scary human beings can be. Sometimes danger does not come from ghosts, but from people.
