En el mundo del cine existe una premisa y es que las segundas partes, ya sean precuelas o secuelas, muy rara vez salen bien ya sea porque la película simplemente no es buena o porque no hay punto de comparación con la anterior. Cada vez que hago una reseña de algún film de terror lo digo y es que soy extremadamente critico y quisquilloso con el genero ya que hacer una película que de verdad valga la pena y sea aceptable es muy complicado, por algo es de los géneros más difíciles de complacer. La Huérfana pudiéramos considerarla como un clásico, no? - y si la respuesta es afirmativa, que tanto le hacía falta otra película?...
In the world of cinema there is a premise that second parts, whether prequels or sequels, very rarely do well either because the film is simply not good or because there is no point of comparison with the previous one. Every time I do a review of a horror film I say it and I am extremely critical and picky with the genre because making a film that is really worthwhile and acceptable is very complicated, which is why it is one of the most difficult genres to please. La Huérfana could be considered a classic, right? - And if the answer is yes, how much it needed another movie?...
Esta nueva entrega de esta saga, por ponerle un nombre, es una precuela, esto quiere decir que su línea temporal se ubica un par de años atrás de los hechos ocurridos en aquella película del 2009. Acá veremos básicamente el inicio del comportamiento errático de esta huérfana que nos ayudará a darnos un poco más de contexto y conocer más el trasfondo de este personaje tan mítico hoy en día. Es un terror muy promedio pero que se deja ver y que tiene un plus importante el cual es que el personaje está interpretado por la misma actriz de hace 12 años atrás. Así que sin más hablemos un poco más de este nuevo film que llega con la intención de reavivar la nostalgia.
This new installment of this saga, to give it a name, is a prequel, this means that its timeline is located a couple of years behind the events that occurred in that 2009 film. Here we will basically see the beginning of the erratic behavior of this orphan that will help us to give us a little more context and learn more about the background of this mythical character today. It is a very average but watchable horror that has an important plus which is that the character is played by the same actress from 12 years ago. So without further ado, let's talk a little more about this new film that comes with the intention of reviving nostalgia.
Como les conté esta historia se ubica un par de años antes de los sucesos de la primera película. Todo empieza con Leena Klammer (Isabelle Fuhrman) una paciente de un hospital psiquiátrico en Estonia quien es altamente peligrosa por los problemas psicológicos que tiene, ella hace vida encerrada en aquel centro en donde la única intención parece ser tenerla alejada de la sociedad, por las razones obvias. La cosa es que si viste la primera película sabrás que ella no es una niña cualquiera y ordinaria por lo que sus habilidades están un poco por encima del promedio, razón que le permite idear un plan para lograr escapar de ese lugar y así poder hacer lo que mejor sabe: manipular a las personas.
As I told you this story is set a couple of years before the events of the first film. It all starts with Leena Klammer (Isabelle Fuhrman) a patient in a psychiatric hospital in Estonia who is highly dangerous because of the psychological problems she has, she lives locked up in that center where the only intention seems to be to keep her away from society, for the obvious reasons. The thing is that if you saw the first movie you will know that she is not an ordinary girl, so her skills are a little above average, reason that allows her to devise a plan to escape from that place and thus be able to do what she knows best: manipulate people.
Mientras está fugitiva tiene que buscar la manera de pasar desapercibida y lo hace haciéndose creándose una identidad falsa de una niña desaparecida de una familia con mucho dinero en los Estados Unidos. Es en este momento cuando la trama empieza a andar y Leena, ahora Esther, comienza a vivir con su nueva familia, una que como todas tiene secretos y que pronto se dará cuenta que esa nueva vida no es como ella la imaginó y todo comenzará a desmoronarse. Y en gran parte esto sucede porque le tocará enfrentarse a una madre que hará todo lo que esté en su poder para proteger a su familia. Aquí es donde veremos de que está hecha Leena/Esther y si será capaz de llevar a cabo su plan.
While she is on the run, she has to find a way to go unnoticed and she does it by creating a false identity of a missing girl from a family with a lot of money in the United States. It is at this moment when the plot begins to move and Leena, now Esther, begins to live with her new family, one that like all of them has secrets and that will soon realize that this new life is not as she imagined it and everything will begin to fall apart. And in large part this happens because she will have to face a mother who will do everything in her power to protect her family. This is where we will see what Leena/Esther is made of and if she will be able to carry out her plan.
Esta es una trama muy parecida a la primera película, la verdad parece que no se quisieron romper mucho la cabeza creando una historia un poco distinta a lo ya visto pero de igual manera es una que te engancha porque este tipo de films son así, aunque sabes que vaya a pasar igualmente te genera una tensión que hace que el interés no lo pierdas, o por lo menos en algunas partes. Con el terror y el suspenso es muy complicado mantener al espectador concentrado sin que caigamos en las risas por algún absurdo que hayamos visto o alguna escena que nos parezca simplona, pues acá no les voy a negar que hay un par en las que uno se pregunta, por qué pasó eso?, que necesidad había? o la típica: eso solo pasa en las películas. Tampoco es algo para crucificar a esta película porque entiendo que estas cosas son más comunes de lo que quisiéramos, al final son los clichés del terror.
This is a plot very similar to the first film, the truth seems that they did not want to break much head creating a story a little different from what we have already seen but still is one that hooks you because this kind of films are like that, even if you know what is going to happen, it still generates a tension that makes you do not lose interest, or at least in some parts. With horror and suspense is very difficult to keep the viewer focused without falling into laughter for some absurdity that we have seen or some scene that seems simplistic, because here I will not deny that there are a couple in which one wonders, why did that happen, what was the need? or the typical: that only happens in the movies. It is not something to crucify this movie because I understand that these things are more common than we would like, in the end they are the clichés of horror.
Las escenas puras de terror, esas en donde vemos que algo inesperado va a pasar pero que en el fondo sabemos que no es tan inesperado siento que están decentes, por lo general están marcadas por el factor sorpresa, una buena ambientación, una buena musicalización y lo mas importante, que se vean reales y que existe una buena cantidad de sangre o el conocido elemento gore. En este film hay mucho de eso y está bien pero también hay una atmosfera inquietante, algo que perturba y que pone el ambiente tenso y creo que es la presencia de Esther, tan solo con que ella esté en un salón es capaz de poner incomodo a cualquiera y esto pasa por la calidad de la actriz, siento que Esther forma parte de Isabelle y esa conexión entre personaje/actriz es vital para que as actuaciones sean creíbles.
The pure horror scenes, those where we see that something unexpected is going to happen but deep down we know that it is not so unexpected, I feel they are decent, they are usually marked by the surprise factor, a good setting, good music and most importantly, that they look real and that there is a good amount of blood or the well known gore element. In this film there is a lot of that and that is fine but there is also a disturbing atmosphere, something that disturbs and makes the atmosphere tense and I think it is the presence of Esther, just her being in a room is capable of making anyone uncomfortable and this happens because of the quality of the actress, I feel that Esther is part of Isabelle and that connection between character/actress is vital for the performances to be credible.
Otras de las cosas importantes es que para esta película no se usaron ningún tipo de ayudas tecnológicas para recrear la niñez de Esther, hay que recordar que Isabelle cuando grabó el primer film tenía un poco más de 10 años. En cambio lo que si se hizo, según la propia actriz, es usar todo tipo de planos, trucos con la cámara, cambios de perspectivas y hasta alguna que otra prótesis para que el aspecto fuera lo más realista posible. Habiendo dicho esto tengo que decir que el trabajo en ese departamento estuvo a la altura, la verdad es que el aspecto es sumamente real acompañado por el vestuario característico de ella. En términos de traer de vuelta a la vida a Esther no fallaron o por lo menos yo no le conseguí un fallo monumental.
Another important thing is that for this film no technological aids were used to recreate Esther's childhood, remember that Isabelle was just over 10 years old when she shot the first film. Instead what was done, according to the actress herself, is to use all kinds of shots, tricks with the camera, perspective changes and even some prosthetics to make the look as realistic as possible. Having said that I have to say that the work in that department was up to par, the truth is that the look is extremely realistic accompanied by her characteristic wardrobe. In terms of bringing Esther back to life they didn't fail or at least I didn't get a monumental failure.
Esa saga de La Huérfana tiene un sello, una marca que hizo que la primera fuera tan inolvidable y no es otra cosa que los plot twist. En la primera entrega lo disfrutamos y en esta segunda tampoco será la excepción a esa regla y es que una vez que se da este cambio o giro pues la historia sin dudas cobra otro sentido y la comenzaremos a ver con otros ojos. Se vuelve más atractiva porque es algo que nadie ve venir, de hecho hasta a mi me sorprendió un poco y eso es algo que agradezco, creo que sin ese plot twist la película hubiese sido un rotundo fracaso, esto por lo menos permitió que no se hundiera tan estrepitosamente, cuando lo vean se darán cuenta de eso.
This saga of The Orphan has a seal, a mark that made the first one so unforgettable and it is none other than the plot twist. In the first installment we enjoyed it and in this second will not be the exception to that rule and once this change or twist is given, the story undoubtedly takes on another meaning and we will begin to see it with different eyes. It becomes more attractive because it is something that no one saw coming, in fact even I was a little surprised and that is something I appreciate, I think that without this plot twist the film would have been a resounding failure, this at least allowed it to not sink so shockingly, when you see it you will realize that.
En cuanto a los personajes pues tenemos a los miembros de la familia en donde la que resalta es Julia Stiles quien hace de Tricia Albright, la mamá de la verdadera Esther. Su personaje es sombrío, raro y con un instinto de supervivencia al máximo. Es una mujer que como ya les comenté hará todo lo posible para mantener unida a su familia pero a un costo muy grande. En esta película es un valor agregado importante porque gran parte de la trama se centra en ella junto con Leena así que lo que veremos es una guerra de mujeres movidas por motores diferentes pero con un objetivo claro y similar.
As for the characters, we have the members of the family where the one that stands out is Julia Stiles who plays Tricia Albright, the mother of the real Esther. Her character is somber, weird and with a survival instinct to the maximum. She is a woman who as I mentioned will do everything she can to keep her family together but at a great cost. In this film it is an important added value because much of the plot focuses on her along with Leena so what we will see is a war of women driven by different engines but with a clear and similar goal.
Y bueno, que hablar de Isabelle. Lógicamente este personaje lo afronta desde una nueva perspectiva que no es otra que la madurez de ser una mujer de 25 años. Interpretar un personaje de una niña siendo una adulta es algo complejo, eso supuso un gran reto para ella el cual en mi humilde opinión logró salir airosa. En este film veremos un poco más a profundidad la verdadera personalidad de Esther, lo maquiavélica que es, lo increíblemente trastornada que está y lo psicópata y sociópata que puede llagar a ser, nada que no sepamos la verdad solo que acá lo vemos el ángulo de lo que fueron los inicios de sus matanzas. Un personaje aprobado con un poco más de lo justo.
And well, what to talk about Isabelle. Logically this character faces it from a new perspective which is none other than the maturity of being a 25 year old woman. Playing a character of a child as an adult is something complex, that was a big challenge for her which in my humble opinion she managed to succeed. In this film we will see a little more in depth the true personality of Esther, how Machiavellian she is, how incredibly deranged she is and how psychopathic and sociopathic she can be, nothing that we don't know the truth, but here we see the angle of what were the beginnings of her killings. A character approved with a little more than just enough.
Entonces, vale la pena ver esta precuela? - yo creo que si a pesar de las cosas mejorables que pueda tener, no es ni será la mejor película del año pero es una que entretiene durante la hora y cuarenta que dura. Tiene sus elementos de terror, hay un suspenso en el aire, el gore es algo que también está presente pero sobretodo los cambios de trama, eso amigos es lo que salva a esta película. Le doy un 6.5/10 porque soy una persona muy crítica con este genero, no me conformo con cualquier cosa, esta película no es tan terrible pero si le faltó mucho para que me llamara más la atención y me convenciera mejor. Les dejo el tráiler para ver si se animan, yo digo que la vean pero ya depende de ustedes.
So, is this prequel worth watching? - I think so, despite the things that can be improved, it is not and will not be the best movie of the year but it is one that entertains during the hour and forty that it lasts. It has its horror elements, there is a suspense in the air, the gore is something that is also present but above all the plot twists, that friends is what saves this movie. I give it a 6.5/10 because I am a very critical person with this genre, I do not settle for anything, this movie is not so terrible but it lacked a lot to call my attention and convince me better. I leave you the trailer to see if you want to see it, I say see it but it's up to you.
