Sydney Sweeney es una de las actrices que más rápido se está haciendo espacio en esta industria tan competitiva y depredadora como la de Hollywood y no precisamente por lo que pueden estar pensando. Comenzó pisando fuerte en Euphoria, esta serie tan aclamada y que ha dado mucho de que hablar, hasta a aparecer en la primera temporada de The White Lotus. Evidentemente ha salido en varias películas pero si me peguntan estas dos apariciones es donde mejor la puedes ver actuar. Por que hago este contexto? - pues porque en esta producción todo el peso y los focos se centran en ella y en como fue capaz, estando en un cuarto totalmente vacío, de interpretar y transmitir de la forma en la que lo hizo.

Sydney Sweeney is one of the actresses who is quickly making a name for herself in the highly competitive and predatory Hollywood industry, and not exactly what you might be thinking. She started out strong in Euphoria, the highly acclaimed and much talked about series, even appearing in the first season of The White Lotus. Evidently she has appeared in several movies but if you ask me these two appearances are where you can see her acting at its best. Why do I make this context? - Because in this production all the weight and the spotlight is focused on her and how she was able, being in a totally empty room, to interpret and transmit the way she did.

Para los que desconocen esta "trama" se trata de un hecho basado de la vida real el cual puso de cabeza a un país entero, Estados Unidos para ser exactos. Nos habla de lo mucho que controlan y tienen monitoreado todo el tema de la seguridad nacional y de lo que para ellos significa una fuga de información y que esta caiga en manos indebidas. Esta mujer en su momento leyó, extrajo y compartió material al cual no debió tener acceso creando una desinformación, o no, de un hecho relacionado a las elecciones presidenciales del año 2016. La verdad es que un film bastante incomodo de ver por momentos el cual es engalanado por una muy buena Sydney. Pero si más vayamos y hablemos un poco de este particular trabajo realizado por HBO.

For those who do not know this "plot", it is a fact based on real life which turned an entire country upside down, the United States to be exact. It tells us how much they control and monitor the whole issue of national security and what it means to them if information leaks and falls into the wrong hands. This woman at the time read, extracted and shared material to which she should not have had access creating a disinformation, or not, of a fact related to the 2016 presidential elections. The truth is that a film quite uncomfortable to watch at times which is embellished by a very good Sydney. But let's go ahead and talk a little bit about this particular work made by HBO.

Como ya dije esta historia se basa en algo que sucedió por allá en junio del 2017 cuando a Reality Winner, una ex miembro de la fuerza aérea de los Estados Unidos, la arrestan y la acusan de espionaje. Reality llevaba una vida normal trabajando como traductora para una agencia encargada de la seguridad nacional del país, esto le permitía tener acceso a información que probablemente no debería de estar a su alcance. El cansancio que suponía vivir en dicho país es lo que hizo que Reality hiciera lo que terminó haciendo, era un país convulsionado políticamente en donde lo único que se respiraba eran conflictos de esa naturaleza, con esto no se pretende eximir las acciones de Winter pero es probable que de un poco de contexto.

As I said this story is based on something that happened back in June 2017 when Reality Winner, a former member of the United States Air Force, was arrested and charged with espionage. Reality was leading a normal life working as a translator for an agency in charge of the country's national security, this allowed her to have access to information that probably should not have been available to her. The fatigue of living in that country is what made Reality do what she ended up doing, it was a politically convulsed country where the only thing that was breathed were conflicts of that nature, this is not intended to exempt Winter's actions but it is likely to give a bit of context.

Pero de que va esta producción? - lo bueno de esta es que todas las interacciones que vemos son sacadas de las grabaciones originales de aquel interrogatorio el cual se dio en la casa de Reality. Por lo que si, los 85 minutos de film comprenden un incomodo, complejo y hasta difícil de ver interrogatorio en donde se ve a unos agentes del FBI haciendo gala de todas las técnicas conocidas para buscar persuadir y quebrar la mente de, en este caso, la sospechosa. De buenas a primeras puede parecer aburrido y cansino de ver pero en lo personal no fue así, la actuacion de Sweeney junto a la forma de interacción con los agentes hizo que el interés no lo perdiera nunca.

But what is this production about? - The good thing about this one is that all the interactions we see are taken from the original recordings of that interrogation which took place in the Reality house. So yes, the 85 minutes of film comprise an uncomfortable, complex and even difficult to watch interrogation where we see FBI agents using all the known techniques to persuade and break the mind of, in this case, the suspect. At first glance it may seem boring and tiring to watch but personally it was not so, Sweeney's performance along with the way of interaction with the agents made the interest never lost.

Algo curioso que se ve y no se si de verdad así son estas personas en la vida real o fue algo adaptado al film es la forma tan extraña y bizarra de actuar de estos agentes. Puedo entender que sea una formula para hacerte sentir incomodo y en paralelo a gusto, se que suena raro, pero había escenas en la que uno como espectador no entendía la forma de actuar de algunos de estos agentes. Esto no es sinónimo de algo malo, todo lo contario, me pareció curioso en una buena manera al punto que te ríes pero por el nivel de absurdo de las interacciones. Estoy convencido que todo es adrede en aras de crear un ambiente en el que ellos sean los que demuestren el poder absoluto.

Something curious that is seen and I don't know if this is really how these people are in real life or if it was something adapted to the film is the strange and bizarre way these agents act. I can understand that it is a formula to make you feel uncomfortable and in parallel at ease, I know it sounds weird, but there were scenes in which one as a viewer did not understand the way of acting of some of these agents. This is not synonymous with something bad, on the contrary, I found it funny in a good way to the point that you laugh but for the level of absurdity of the interactions. I am convinced that everything is deliberate in order to create an environment in which they are the ones who demonstrate absolute power.

Otro factor es lo frágil que es la mente humana cuando no se está programada para hacer algo realmente malo. Al principio vemos a una Reality confiada y tranquila, una mujer segura de que no está pasando nada y que todo o es rutina o un malentendido. Pero a medida que los agentes comienzan a apretar las tuercas y a ser más incisivos todo poco se va desmoronando hasta llegar finalmente a la verdad. Y este "quiebre" se ve reflejado en la forma de actuar de nuestra protagonista, en los gestos, en el semblante de la cara, la forma de hablar y hasta en la postura haciendo que uno a través de la pantalla conecte de una mejor forma al punto de sentir esa incomodidad y la sensación de llagar a un callejón sin salida.

Another factor is how fragile the human mind is when it is not programmed to do something really bad. At first we see a confident and calm Reality, a woman sure that nothing is going on and that everything is either routine or a misunderstanding. But as the agents begin to tighten the screws and become more incisive everything little by little falls apart until we finally get to the truth. And this "breakdown" is reflected in the way our protagonist acts, in the gestures, in the countenance of her face, the way she speaks and even in her posture, making one connect through the screen in a better way to the point of feeling that discomfort and the sensation of reaching a dead end.

Esta película, no se si llamarla así, me recordó un poco a The Whale en el sentido de que todo se desarrolla dentro de una casa. Esto nos dice que no es necesario una producción de millones de dólares para saber llegarle a la audiencia, lo único necesario es una buena historia para ser contada y una actuacion que sea capaz de llenar todos y cado uno de los espacios. Puedo entender que esto no sea para todo el mundo, no hay acción de ningún tipo, cero disparos, ni golpes; lo único que hay es un drama muy bien elaborado acompañado de unos diálogos e interacciones sumamente particulares al punto de que termina siendo algo digno de ver. Darle vida a un interrogatorio que está documentado solo a través del audio y lograr captar las expresiones y la propia personalidad de cada persona es lo complicado acá y es la verdadera magia de este trabajo.

This film, I don't know if I should call it that, reminded me a bit of The Whale in the sense that everything takes place inside a house. This tells us that you don't need a million dollar production to know how to reach the audience, all you need is a good story to be told and an acting that is able to fill each and every space. I can understand that this is not for everyone, there is no action of any kind, no shooting, no hits; the only thing there is is a very well crafted drama accompanied by some very particular dialogues and interactions to the point that it ends up being something worth watching. Bringing to life an interrogation that is documented only through audio and managing to capture the expressions and personality of each person is the tricky part here and is the real magic of this work.

El trabajo actoral de joven promesa de la actuacion, porque apenas tiene 25 años, es brutal al nivel que esta interpretación debería de ser llevada a los grandes premios del cine y televisión. Recuerdo cuando la vi actuar en Euphoria dije en más de una ocasión que la capacidad que tiene esta mujer para transmitir emociones, cual quiera que sea su naturaleza, es gigantesca. Siento que en este papel logra mimetizarse de tal manera con la Reality original que si ven fotos de las dos puede llegar a costar reconocer cual es cual y es que si, el trabajo que debe de haber detrás tuvo que haber sido importante. Vi esta historia básicamente por ella y terminé muy satisfecho.

The acting work of a promising young actress, because she is only 25 years old, is brutal to the level that this interpretation should be taken to the major film and television awards. I remember when I saw her acting in Euphoria I said on more than one occasion that the ability of this woman to convey emotions, whatever their nature, is gigantic. I feel that in this role she manages to mimic in such a way with the original Reality that if you see pictures of the two it can be difficult to recognize which is which and yes, the work that must have been behind it must have been important. I saw this story basically because of her and I ended up very satisfied.

Es un trabajo sencillo pero de mucha calidad, mucha profundidad y mucho nivel interpretativo. Le doy un 8/10 porque cumple a cabalidad con su premisa la cual es vivir o revivir lo que fue ese interrogatorio haciendo sentir incomodo al espectador poniéndonos en la piel de la sospechosa. Creo que vale mucho la pena verlo y por tanto es algo que se lo recomiendo a todo el mundo. Tiene una duración de menos de hora y media y lo pueden conseguir en HBO. Les dejo el tráiler.

It is a simple but high quality work, with a lot of depth and a high level of interpretation. I give it an 8/10 because it fully complies with its premise which is to live or relive what was that interrogation making the viewer feel uncomfortable putting us in the skin of the suspect. I think it is well worth watching and therefore I recommend it to everyone. It has a duration of less than an hour and a half and you can get it on HBO. Here is the trailer.
