Hello friends, good vibes to everyone.

Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.

It’s October 5th, and we’re keeping the "spooky season" spirit alive here. Christmas is still a couple of months away, but we’re celebrating right now with a story full of death, murder, and trauma—a month dedicated to horror cinema. Within the genre, I think slashers are the kind of movies people really enjoy; it’s surprising, but many people are more afraid of the paranormal than of someone chasing them down with an axe or some other weapon to kill them—I suppose the fear of the unknown, or of the unseen, runs deeper. But that’s not what this film is about; this story focuses on trauma, nightmares, and a "duty" that must be fulfilled once December rolls around. The team at "Bloody Disgusting" is behind this project—they’ve produced films like the Terrifier saga—so let that serve as a reference point for what to expect.

Billy Chapman’s life has not been easy. When he was just a child, he was traveling with his parents one night. On a dark, deserted road, another car approached theirs; after a brief exchange of words, Billy’s parents were brutally murdered by a man dressed as Santa Claus—or Father Christmas, however you prefer to call him. Naturally, this event scarred young Billy for life; he was never the same, and those images remained seared into his mind. As time passed, he grew up carrying that trauma, which manifested as a voice—not merely a voice, but something far more terrifying—telling him what to do and whom to kill. You see, following that incident, Billy had come into physical contact with his parents' killer, triggering a change in his body that allowed an "entity" to take up residence within him from that moment on.

Billy arrives in a town and meets Pamela, who acts as a sort of catalyst, helping him control the impulses that strike him from time to time. Essentially, an inner voice allows him to identify people who are evil and deserve to die; Billy then dons his Santa Claus suit—linked to his past trauma—and hunts them down to kill them. It plays out much like an Advent calendar: one day, one death. The plot follows Billy as he—unintentionally, deep down wanting to change—eliminates his targets while simultaneously trying to solve a series of disappearances in the town. Describing him as a vigilante isn't far off the mark; he kills people who deserve it, even though they appear harmless at first glance. Personally, I find it very entertaining to watch; the slasher elements are excellent on their own, and the fact that he metes out justice makes it a perfect watch.

The film is very graphic—we’re talking axe killings, beheadings, stabbings, crushed heads, and viscera and brains spilling out of bodies; it’s everything you’d expect from this type of movie. The story is interesting because everything has a reason for being; while the film doesn't explicitly explain the true origin of the ability to hear voices and see things others can't, I don't think it needs to. I attributed it to trauma—it makes a lot of sense—as if the person receiving this "power" does so to fill an inner void. A standout feature is seeing the backstories of the people destined to die, which helps you understand just how much they deserve it; that’s a great touch—it’s not killing for the sake of killing; there is a purpose. All of this ensures the movie is never boring; I repeat, if you enjoy slasher films, you’re sure to have a good time with this one.

There aren't any powerhouse performances here—I’ve said this before—but films like this don't need them; the focus lies elsewhere. What matters is the visual aspect and having a story that actually makes sense. Fortunately, this movie delivers on both counts. In fact, by the end, you realize nothing was random; even the death of Billy’s parents has a deeper significance. I think the ending is great—it’s unexpected, which is why I really liked it—and it feels consistent and true to the protagonists' story. Anyway, if you’re looking for a solid, decent slasher—one that occasionally veers into comedy but delivers the goods when it comes to kills—then this is the movie for you. Highly recommended; the hour-and-a-half runtime flew by. I’ve included the trailer below so you can get a feel for what it’s all about.

A Christmas slasher with trauma, supernatural elements!! and a vigilante angle? I'm definitely curious about this one.
