The film industry seems to have found this season's cliché: humanoids with artificial intelligence that rebel. Films like M3gan, Alice: Subservience with Megan Fox, and Companion with Sophie Thatcher are some of the stories that tell us about the potential dangers of AI. Some of these films didn't work, others only a little; the point is, it seems they're always looking for ways to twist a plot that, frankly, doesn't have much more to offer than seeing a robot with free will. And that's why Soulm8te arrives, an AI whose power is sexual dominance—just like you read it.
El mundo del cine parece haber encontrado lo cliché de la temporada, los humanoides con inteligencia artificial que se revelan. Films como M3gan, Alice: Subservience con Megan Fox o Companion con Sophie Thatcher son algunos de las historias que nos cuentan los posibles peligros que pueden existir con el uso de IA. Algunas de esas películas no funcionaron, otras solo un poco; la cosa es que pareciera que siempre buscan la forma de darle la vuelta a una trama que la verdad no tiene mucho más que ofrecer más allá de ver como un robot tiene libre albedrío. Y es por esto que llega Soulm8te, una IA cuyo poder es la dominancia sexual, así tal cual lo leen.
It's worth noting that this is a spin-off of M3gan, as it all takes place within the same cinematic universe; in fact, there are small references to that film. The story begins with David, a man grieving the death of his wife. Instead of socializing and spending time with his work friends—he certainly has some, as he's not alone—he decides to acquire an AI-powered android made by the company he works for. The purpose of these robots (lovebots) is to provide affection in the face of the current epidemic of loneliness. Everything seems to be going according to plan, but David's desperation is such that, like the skilled engineer he is, he decides to alter the code to make Sara more independent, more self-aware, and more capable of making decisions.
Hay que decir que esto es un spin-off de M3gan ya que ocurre todo dentro del mismo universo cinematográfico, de hecho en el film se pueden ver pequeñas referencia a esta película. Esta trama comienza con David, un hombre que está pasando por un luto tras la muerte de su esposa. En vez de socializar y estar con sus amigos del trabajo, que los tiene, no es que está solo en la vida, decide adquirir un androide con IA hechos por la empresa para la que trabaja. La razón de ser de estos robots (lovebot) es la de proporcionar afecto ante la epidemia de soledad que hay. Todo parece ir dentro de lo esperado pero la desesperación de este hombre es tal que decide alterar los códigos, como buen ingeniero que es, para que Sara sea más independiente, tenga más conciencia y poder de decisión.
Giving her free will, as I mentioned before, was poor David's big mistake. From this point on, Sara, the name David gave her, becomes possessive, dangerous, and uses sex to try to get close to people, in this case, men. Starting with this last point, I'd say this is an erotic drama, as described on several websites, and perhaps that makes sense. The film has a couple of explicit scenes with nudity that suggest sex is part of these androids' configuration as a way to be more affectionate; that is, it's used as a tool of manipulation and as a deadly weapon because you'll literally see someone die during the act. This is the only new thing I can find in this plot, since in essence it's the same as the previous films mentioned at the beginning.
Darle el libre albedrio, tal y como les comenté antes, fue el gran error del pobre de David. A partir de acá Sara, nombre que le puso David, se convierte en algo posesivo, peligroso y que usa el sexo para buscar llegarle a las personas, en este caso a los hombres. Empezando por esto último decir que esto es un drama erótico, reseñado así en varias páginas y es que puede que tenga sentido. El film tiene un par de escenas explicitas con desnudos incluidos en donde dejan entrever que el sexo forma parte de la configuración de estos androides como método para ser más afectivos, es decir, se usa como un arma de manipulación y como un arma mortal porque literalmente verán como alguien muere en pleno acto. Esto es lo unico novedoso que puedo rescatar de esta trama ya que en esencia es lo mismo que las películas anteriores mencionadas al principio.
It obviously makes it very clear what interacting so much with AI entails, to the point where you never know when they're going to rebel. How many of us don't use ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini on a daily basis? Is this dangerous, or are these productions exaggerating? How far are we from actually seeing these humanoids? These are the typical questions that remain after watching this kind of thing. Soulm8te is marketed as horror, but for me, there's no horror. There is suspense because, in the end, there's a robot that represents a threat, killing people, so the goal is to escape it. I never connected with the protagonist. I tried to empathize with him because of his grief, but it wasn't possible. The decision to have that AI wasn't justifiable. He works with a colleague who clearly likes him, but even so, she chose to make that decision. I think that of all the movies I've seen in this genre, this is undoubtedly the worst.
Obviamente deja muy claro lo que supone interactuar tanto con las IA al punto de que uno nunca sabe cuando se van a revelar. Cuantos de nosotros no usamos ChatGPT, Claude o Géminis en el día a día?. esto será peligroso o estas producciones exageran?, que tan lejos estamos de ver estos humanoides? - son las típicas preguntas que quedan después de ver estas cosas. Soulm8te la venden como un terror, para mi no hay terror. Si hay suspenso porque al final hay un robot el cual representa una amenaza que está matando gente por lo que el fin es buscar escapar de él. Nunca conecté con el protagonista, busqué empatizar por el tema del luto pero no fue posible, la decisión de tener a esa IA no era justificable. Trabaja con una compañera que claramente gusta de él pero aún así prefirió tomar esa dedición. Creo que de todas las películas que he visto de este estilo, esta sin dudas es la peor.
How do they justify the horror? - Well, through the deaths. Not that many people die, but the way they do it (very graphic and explicit) makes me guess it falls into the genre. The ending is open to interpretation, but that doesn't excuse its weakness. The way they "eliminate" this robot is a poorly told joke; it didn't convince me at all. The acting is very average, absolutely nothing remarkable. Perhaps the best was Claudia Doumit (the same one from The Boys); I think she gave the best performance. Lily Sullivan (who was in Evil Dead: Rise) plays the android, and well, she's just okay, apart from her steamy scenes. What can I say, friends? I didn't like it, and it didn't impress me in the slightest. I knew what I was getting into, but in the end, it was just more of the same. If anyone has seen it, tell me what you thought. For those who haven't, well, the usual advice: go see it and tell me what you think. Exactly an hour and a half. I'll leave the trailer below.
Como justifican el terror? - pues por las muertes. No muere tanta gente pero por la forma en la que lo hacen (bien gráficas y explicitas) supongo entra en el género. El final de la película es interpretativo pero eso no le quita lo flojo. La forma en como "eliminan" a este robot es un chiste mal contado, no me convenció en ningún momento. Las actuaciones son muy promedio, absolutamente nada destacable, quizás la más top fue Claudia Doumit (la misma de The Boys), creo que la que mejor interpretó y actuó fue ella. Lily Sullivan (estuvo en Evil Dead: Rise) es la androide y bueno, normal más allá de sus escenas subidas de tono. Que les puedo decir amigos, no me gustó ni mucho menos me impresionó, sabía lo que iba a ver pero al final fue un licuado de más de lo mismo. Si alguien la vio díganme que les pareció, a los que no pues lo de siempre, vayan a verla y me cuentan. Hora y media exacta. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.
