No amigos, no están leyendo mal, ese es el titulo de esta reseña porque lo político tuvo mucho que ver en los orígenes de este gran juego. Quien no ha jugado Tetris alguna vez? - creo que todos por acá lo hemos hecho y es que por allá a principios de los noventas fue un verdadero boom cuando este juego de bloques llegó a la gente de la mano de Nintendo. Pero no todo fue color de rosas, para que eso pasara sucedieron cosas bastantes siniestras que se dieron en un contexto en donde la extinta Unión Soviética estaba a punto de desaparecer pero que aún así querían que las cosas se hicieran a su modo, como buenos comunistas.
No friends, you are not reading wrong, that is the title of this review because politics had a lot to do with the origins of this great game. Who hasn't played Tetris at some time? - I think all of us around here have done it, and back in the early nineties it was a real boom when this block game came to the people by the hand of Nintendo. But not everything was rosy, for that to happen some pretty sinister things happened in a context where the extinct Soviet Union was about to disappear but they still wanted things to be done their way, like good communists.
Por si no alguno no lo sabe el juego de Tetris fue inventando por un ruso, Alekséi Pázhitnov, estando en pleno Moscú a finales de los ochenta; es a partir de acá en donde empieza esta película. Recuerdo que me había salido en las sugerencias y no le di mucha importancia hasta que leí algo por ahí que llamó mi atención por lo que al final sucumbí. Debo decir que me sorprendió muchísimo el film, no me lo esperaba en lo absoluto, es un thriller tipo Argo en donde hay una tensión perenne por estar en un sitio en donde no eres bienvenido, en este caso en la Rusia más comunista, y en el que al mínimo error todo puede terminar muy mal. Entonces vayamos y hablemos de como fueron las negociaciones para que Tetris fuera lo que es hoy en día.
In case someone doesn't know it, the Tetris game was invented by a Russian, Alekséi Pázhitnov, being in Moscow at the end of the eighties; it is from here where this movie starts. I remember that it had come up in the suggestions and I didn't give it much importance until I read something that caught my attention and I finally succumbed. I must say that I was very surprised by the film, I did not expect it at all, it is a thriller like Argo where there is a perennial tension for being in a place where you are not welcome, in this case in the most communist Russia, and in which at the slightest mistake everything can end very badly. So let's go and talk about how the negotiations went to make Tetris what it is today.
Esta magnifica historia comienza con Henk Rogers (Taron Egerton), un programador y vendedor de videojuegos al que la vida no le estaba favoreciendo mucho que digamos. Un buen día en una conferencia en Las Vegas descubre lo que sería su boleto a una mejor vida pero también una de sus más grandes pesadillas para los próximos días y hasta meses, el famosos juego de Tetris. Como es de esperarse todo esto se maneja bajo licencias y derechos en lo que a consolas, arcades o lo que viene siendo las famosas maquinitas y hasta de los dispositivos portátiles se refiere, es por eso que para poder comercializar algo tiene que estar todo en regla y de esto es de lo que va este film, de como se dan las conversaciones con todas las partes involucradas.
This magnificent story begins with Henk Rogers (Taron Egerton), a video game programmer and salesman whose life was not going too well. One day at a conference in Las Vegas he discovers what would be his ticket to a better life but also one of his biggest nightmares for the coming days and even months, the famous Tetris game. As expected all this is handled under licenses and rights as far as consoles, arcades or what is becoming the famous machines and even portable devices are concerned, that's why in order to market something has to be all in order and that is what this film is about, how the conversations with all parties involved are given.
Cuando se pensaba que todo estaba resuelto es cuando inician las tensiones por este bendito juego en donde la Unión Soviética, Mirrorsof, empresa británica del mundo de los videojuegos, la misma Nintendo y Henk, quien fue el que descubrió el juego en Japón entraron en una lucha "legal" o más bien de fuerza por ver quien se quedaba con el poder de Tetris. La cosa es que pronto nuestro amigo Rogers caerá victima de una red de corrupción abismal dentro de la URSS en donde su vida está potencialmente en peligro. La verdad es un film que te mantiene en vilo porque por historia una sabe de lo que eran capaces de hacer los soviéticos por lo que si, la intriga y el suspenso están a la orden del día.
When it was thought that everything was solved is when tensions began to arise over this blessed game where the Soviet Union, Mirrorsof, a British company in the world of video games, Nintendo itself and Henk, who was the one who discovered the game in Japan entered into a "legal" struggle or rather of force to see who would get the power of Tetris. The thing is that soon our friend Rogers will fall victim to a network of abysmal corruption within the USSR where his life is potentially in danger. The truth is a film that keeps you in suspense because by history one knows what the Soviets were capable of doing so yes, intrigue and suspense are the order of the day.
Como dije anteriormente lo que predomina en esta película es la intriga buena y dura, que no te confunda el contexto del film. Es una historia la cual nos muestra una Unión Soviética por dentro, como podían llegar a pensar sus oficiales y políticos, como todo se manejaba a punta del miedo, intimidación y extorción, como es estar vigilado y espiado las veinticuatro horas del día; de allí a que la trama en muchos momentos se tornara angustiante. Todo esto hacía, por lo menos en mi caso, que el interés nunca lo perdiera como de hecho no hice, me enganché rápidamente. Es verdad que al principio cuesta un poco agarrarle el hilo pero una vez todas las negociaciones arrancan es cuando entiendes la magnitud de todo lo que hay detrás.
As I said before what predominates in this film is the good and hard intrigue, do not be confused by the context of the film. It is a story which shows us a Soviet Union on the inside, how its officials and politicians could think, how everything was managed by fear, intimidation and extortion, how it is to be watched and spied on twenty-four hours a day; hence the plot in many moments became distressing. All this made, at least in my case, that I never lost interest and in fact I did not, I got hooked quickly. It is true that at the beginning it is a little hard to grasp the thread but once all the negotiations start is when you understand the magnitude of everything that lies behind.
Casi toda la película es una "pelea" por ver quien puja más por Tetris, en donde el verdadero creador no tenía voz ni voto puesto que dentro de la URSS era ilegal vender algo a extranjeros. A pesar de esto es super entretenido de ver porque es una lucha de intereses en donde en teoría deberían de ganar los que más influencia y poder tenían, en este caso esto pasó a medias. Era hasta cómico ver como una ideología se caía por su propio peso cuando el dinero hacía acto de presencia y es que veo este film más allá de un tema cultural porque siento que esto es cultura general, como una película para que las nuevas generaciones entiendan como era parte del mundo hace 30 años.
Almost the whole movie is a "fight" to see who bid more for Tetris, where the real creator had no say because in the USSR it was illegal to sell anything to foreigners. In spite of this it is super entertaining to watch because it is a struggle of interests where in theory those who had more influence and power should win, in this case this happened half-heartedly. It was even comical to see how an ideology fell under its own weight when money made its presence felt and I see this film beyond a cultural issue because I feel that this is general culture, as a film for the new generations to understand how the world was 30 years ago.
Otro detalle cool pero no menos importante es la forma en como animaron la película. Dentro de algunas escenas incorporaron animaciones para simular que estábamos dentro de un videojuego de la época, cuando hacían viajes, para mostrar locaciones, hay una persecución en donde se aprecia de una forma muy top todo esto; son estos detalles los que para mi le dan más valor a lo que estoy viendo. Es un golpe a la nostalgia este film, cuando salió el primer Game Boy, aquellos juegos del NES como son Punch Out, Mario, Zelda, hay muchas referencias que hacen que uno termine disfrutando aún más esta película, sin duda es una de las razones del por que me gustó tanto.
Another cool detail but not less important is the way they animated the movie. In some scenes they incorporated animations to simulate that we were inside a video game of the time, when they made trips, to show locations, there is a chase where all this is appreciated in a very top form; these are the details that for me give more value to what I'm seeing. It is a blow to nostalgia this film, when the first Game Boy came out, those NES games like Punch Out, Mario, Zelda, there are many references that make you end up enjoying this film even more, it is certainly one of the reasons why I liked it so much.
El personaje Taron Egerton es uno el cual no acepta un no como respuesta y es que hay que entender que esta apuesta por el Tetris es una que para él supone o quedarse sin nada o tener lo que siempre soñó. Lo actúa bien, tampoco es algo increíblemente relevante pero está bien, se sabe o buen actor que es. Hay personajes secundarios que son importantes, por ejemplo Robert Maxwell quien es el dueño de Mirrorsoft, el tipo es el propio patán que se cree influyente solo porque es amigo de tal persona, al final terminarán odiándolo porque es todo lo que está mal dentro de los negocios. Y bueno los personajes rusos, es impresionante como cualquiera puede ser despreciable sin necesidad de actuar tanto, la verdad es que generan todo lo que deberían de generar.
The character Taron Egerton is one who does not take no for an answer and it must be understood that this bet on Tetris is one that for him means either to be left with nothing or to have what he always dreamed of. He acts well, it is not something incredibly relevant but it's okay, you know how good an actor he is. There are secondary characters that are important, for example Robert Maxwell who is the owner of Mirrorsoft, the guy is the very lout who thinks he is influential just because he is a friend of such a person, in the end you will end up hating him because he is everything that is wrong within the business. And well the Russian characters, it is impressive how anyone can be despicable without the need to act so much, the truth is that they generate everything they should generate.
El film no era lo que me esperaba, fue mucho más. Buena ambientación, buenas actuaciones, una trama que invita a la intriga y a la incertidumbre, es un buen contexto histórico y cultural y definitivamente no es algo que cansa porque siempre hay como un plot twist dentro de las propias negociaciones que abren otro camino por lo que al final se torna muy interesante todo. Le doy un 8/10, se las recomiendo mucho a todos. Está disponible en Apple Tv+ y dura un poco menos de dos horas. Por acá abajo les dejo el tráiler.
The film was not what I expected, it was much more. Good setting, good performances, a plot that invites intrigue and uncertainty, it is a good historical and cultural context and definitely not something that tires because there is always like a plot twist within the negotiations themselves that open another way so that in the end it becomes very interesting everything. I give it an 8/10, I highly recommend it to everyone. It is available on Apple Tv+ and lasts a little less than two hours. Below is the trailer.

Este film si que fue una grata sorpresa. yo quede encantado, a mi lista de los mejores de este año. Hicieron un gran trabajo, adaptando la historia real con todo ese rollo de espionaje, humor, drama, es muy entretenida y eso que se logre con la historia de la creación y comercialización de un videojuego, es fascinante. Excelente película.
