Recuerdo que mis inicios con las series se remontan a los años 90 con títulos como: Married with Children, Everybody Loves Raymond, Seinfeld, 3rd Rock from the Sun, The Nanny, aunque muy fanático de esta última no fui, y por supuesto de That '70s Show, son o fueron series que marcaron mucho mis días porque fue gracias a ellas que descubrí este mundo en el que sigo inmerso hoy en día; obviamente no fueron las pioneras pero algunas si llegaron a dejar un gran legado, uno que Kitty y Red decidieron continuar con esta nueva entrega, un poco más woke y políticamente correcto que su antecesor, pero bastante disfrutable o por lo menos esa fue la impresión que me dio.

I remember that my beginnings with series go back to the 90's with titles like: Married with Children, Everybody Loves Raymond, Seinfeld, 3rd Rock from the Sun, The Nanny, although I wasn't a big fan of the latter, and of course That '70s Show, they are or were series that marked my days a lot because it was thanks to them that I discovered this world in which I am still immersed today; obviously they were not the pioneers but some of them did leave a great legacy, one that Kitty and Red decided to continue with this new installment, a little more woke and politically correct than its predecessor, but quite enjoyable or at least that was the impression it gave me.

Para aquellos que no han visto That '70s Show puede que les resulte un poco complicado captar todas las referencias que acá se van a ver y que son el verdadero gancho de esta historia por lo que mi consejo es que traten de buscarla si y solo si están interesados en ver esta nueva adaptación. Para el resto que si la vieron sabemos que aquella historia era mucho más ácida y con un humor más frontal y directo, esto es porque en aquella época no había filtro y todo era más "aceptable". Esto no quiere decir eso haya sido malo o bueno, simplemente eran otros tiempos y ya está. La cosa es que esta nueva trama si se cuida un poco de esas viejas mañas y, como era de esperarse, toca temas que están en la conversación actual para buscar encajar mejor en las nuevas generaciones. Pero bueno, hablemos entonces un poco de lo que es esta nueva aventura de los Forman.

For those who have not seen That '70s Show may find it a little complicated to grasp all the references that will be seen here and that are the real hook of this story so my advice is to try to find it if and only if you are interested in seeing this new adaptation. For the rest of you who have seen it, we know that that story was much more acidic and with a more frontal and direct humor, this is because at that time there was no filter and everything was more "acceptable". This does not mean that it was bad or good, they were simply other times and that's it. The thing is that this new plot does take care a bit of those old tricks and, as expected, touches on issues that are in the current conversation to try to fit better with the new generations. Esta secuela comienza con Kitty y Red (Debra Jo Rupp y Kurtwood Smith), los entrañables padres y ahora abuelos que fueron unas piezas fundamentales en la vida de Point Place. Ellos son los padres de Eric quien después de un noviazgo bastante particular con Donna se casaron y tuvieron una hija, Leia (Callie Haverda) quien decide pasar el verano entero en casa de sus abuelos. En dicho tiempo ella conocerá a algunos jóvenes que viven en el vecindario haciendo que muchos recuerdos y vivencias vuelvan a aparecer en las tranquilas vidas de los Forman haciéndonos recordar a los espectadores lo cariñosa y peculiar que es Kitty y lo profundamente cascarrabias que es Red.

This sequel begins with Kitty and Red (Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith), the endearing parents and now grandparents who were instrumental in Point Place's life. They are Eric's parents who after a rather peculiar courtship with Donna married and had a daughter, Leia (Callie Haverda) who decides to spend the entire summer at her grandparents' house. During that time she will meet some young people who live in the neighborhood making many memories and experiences reappear in the quiet lives of the Formans reminding the viewers how affectionate and peculiar Kitty is and how deeply curmudgeonly Red is.

Una vez Leia llega a la casa es cuando esta trama empieza su camino. Una que estará llena de historias de amor, drogas, sexo, pero todo bajo un manto mucho más cuidado y sutil de lo que a primera vista se puede pensar. No es sorpresa para nadie que este tipo de adaptaciones, si cabe el término, en la mayoría de los casos no termina cumpliendo con las expectativas de muchos porque los tiempos son otros y porque es muy difícil captar esa esencia que vimos en la original. Aquí pasa eso? - si y no. Hay muchas cosas con las que no conecté, más que todo personajes, pero hay otras que si debo decir que me causaron risa y me llevaron 25 años atrás, creo que esto pasó porque fueron los mismos creadores de That '70s Show los que llevaron a cabo esta producción.

Once Leia arrives at the house is when this plot begins its journey. One that will be full of love stories, drugs, sex, but all under a much more careful and subtle mantle than at first glance you might think. It is no surprise to anyone that this type of adaptations, if the term fits, in most cases do not end up meeting the expectations of many because the times are different and because it is very difficult to capture the essence we saw in the original. There are many things that I did not connect with, mostly characters, but there are others that I must say that made me laugh and took me back 25 years, I think this happened because it was the same creators of That '70s Show who carried out this production.

Esta nueva entrega al igual que la pasada no tiene una trama en concreto, o si la tiene pero son más situaciones de vida, cosas cotidianas en el día a día de unos adolescentes, de ahí a que el peso y éxito dependan enteramente de sus personajes y de como sean capaces de llevar la serie sin aburrir o ser cansinos. Las comparaciones son odiosas y creo que ese es el error que estamos cometiendo todos porque si, me incluyo, al querer poner en una balanza un producto que tiene casi 30 años de hecho con otro realizado en pleno 2022, evidentemente no va a ser igual y eso, vuelvo y repito, no es necesariamente malo, solo es diferente ante nuestra perspectiva y ojos. Esto no implica que la serie sea terrible pero tampoco es un diez pleno, hablando muy objetivamente.

This new installment, like the last one, does not have a specific plot, or if it does, it has more life situations, everyday things in the daily lives of teenagers, hence the weight and success depend entirely on their characters and how they are able to carry the series without being boring or tiresome. Comparisons are odious and I think that's the mistake we are all making because if, I include myself, wanting to put on a scale a product that is almost 30 years old with another made in 2022, obviously it will not be the same and that, I repeat, is not necessarily bad, it is just different in our perspective and eyes. This does not imply that the series is terrible but it is not a full ten either, very objectively speaking.

Con lo dicho muy probablemente para una persona de 20 años esta serie sea increíble y eso está bien, para mi no fue tan mala, me la esperaba peor la verdad. En términos generales por ser una serie corta, ya que sus capítulos son de un poco más de 20 minutos, muy personalmente nunca me aburrió, puede que por culpa de una que otra actuacion o escena si me haya descolocado un poco pero al fin de cuentas son cosas muy puntuales. Como dije el gancho son las referencias y los personajes del elenco original que hacen apariciones esporádicas en la serie, Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Topher Grace, Laura Prepon y Wilmer Valderrama. Sinceramente son las partes que más se disfrutan porque la esencia de sus personajes uno las puede seguir viendo después de tanto tiempo.

With that said, probably for a 20 year old person this series is incredible and that's fine, for me it wasn't that bad, I expected it to be worse. In general terms for being a short series, since its chapters are a little more than 20 minutes, very personally it never bored me, maybe because of one or the other acting or scene if I was a little off but at the end of the day they are very punctual things. As I said the hook are the references and the characters of the original cast that make sporadic appearances in the series, Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Topher Grace, Laura Prepon and Wilmer Valderrama. Honestly, these are the parts that are most enjoyable because the essence of their characters can still be seen after so much time.

Cual es mi problema? - que muchas de las cosas las sentí forzadas, es como si quisieran querer parecerse demasiado a lo que fue en vez de buscar hacer algo más original. Entiendo lo de la "esencia" que lo he repetido mucho hoy pero no hacía falta que todo se viera tan artificial, como con una necesidad de buscar quedar bien con todo el mundo, tanto con mi generación como con las nuevas y es allí en donde se pierde un poco esta serie. Los culpables? - algunos personajes. De Kitty y Red no tengo nada negativo que decir, son el alma de esta serie, el ancla, los que mantienen TODO unido, siguen siendo graciosos, siguen dando risa, son personajes a los que les tomas cariño muy fácil y agradezco mucho que estuvieran porque sino... esto hubiese sido un rotundo fracaso.

What is my problem? - I felt that many of the things were forced, it's as if they wanted to look too much like what it was instead of trying to do something more original. I understand the "essence" thing, I've repeated it a lot today, but it wasn't necessary to make everything look so artificial, like a need to look good with everyone, both with my generation and with the new ones, and that's where this series gets lost a little bit. The culprits? - Some of the characters. I have nothing negative to say about Kitty and Red, they are the soul of this series, the anchor, the ones that hold EVERYTHING together, they are still funny, they still make you laugh, they are characters that you get attached to very easily and I am very thankful that they were there because otherwise... this would have been a complete failure.

Dentro de los personajes jóvenes y nuevos Leia es quizás con la que mejor me sentí. Un personaje muy parecido a lo que fue su papá Eric solo que a ella la noté muy natural y genuina, siento que ella en la vida real puede que sea un poco así, a lo mejor por eso no la vi con una interpretación tan falsa logrando que me gustara un poco. De resto amigos, confieso que no conecté con ninguno. Ozzie, quien desconozco si es gay en la vida real, lo vi en exceso forzado, buscando querer ser el nuevo Fez y debo decir que no me gustó nada la actuación de Reyn Doi, tiene sus líneas decentes o remates de chistes graciosos pero hasta ahí. Los demás muy promedio todos, no se, totalmente intrascendentes en caso de que no hubiera una segunda temporada, estoy seguro que no te acordarías de ninguno.

Among the young and new characters Leia is perhaps the one with whom I felt the best. A character very similar to what her father Eric was, only that I noticed her very natural and genuine, I feel that in real life she may be a little bit like that, maybe that's why I didn't see her with such a false interpretation, making me like her a little bit. As for the rest of the friends, I confess that I didn't connect with any of them. Ozzie, who I don't know if he is gay in real life, I saw him too forced, trying to be the new Fez and I must say I didn't like Reyn Doi's acting at all, he has his decent lines or funny jokes but that's it. The rest very average all, I don't know, totally inconsequential in case there wasn't a second season, I'm sure you wouldn't remember any of them.

En fin, una serie que en efecto nos trae un poco de nostalgia con una ambientación en los mediados de noventa y que con todo esto vemos una trama juvenil muy estándar que es capaz de hacernos pasar el rato sin mayores sorpresas. Me gustó mucho el cameo de los actores de la primera serie, de lo mejor que vimos, creo que ahí juega la nostalgia de la que les hablo y bueno, larga vida a Kitty y Red, son extraordinarios. Creo que por ellos me animé a ver la serie y aunque no lo crean no me arrepiento. Le doy un 7/10 porque todas las referencias, las transiciones entre las escenas, el estilo y la forma en como la grabaron y una que otras situaciones de la trama estuvieron bastante decentes y buenas. In short, a series that indeed brings us a bit of nostalgia with a setting in the mid-nineties and with all this we see a very standard juvenile plot that is able to make us pass the time without major surprises. I really liked the cameo of the actors from the first series, one of the best we saw, I think that's where the nostalgia I'm talking about plays and well, long live Kitty and Red, they are extraordinary. I think it was because of them that I decided to watch the series and believe it or not I don't regret it. I give it a 7/10 because all the references, the transitions between scenes, the style and the way it was filmed and some other situations of the plot were pretty decent and good.
