Finalmente había llegado el día en el que vería una de las películas que están llamadas a ser de las mejores del genero de terror de este año 2022. Me considero un gran fan de este estilo de films pero también entendiendo que hacer una historia realmente buena y que atrape por lo general es muy complicado y casi siempre sale mal, de ahí a que sean muy pocos los títulos cinematográficos que realmente valgan la pena ver a lo largo de la historia reciente. El terror tiene que tener, en mi opinión, la mezcla perfecta entre un contenido gore y unas dosis de suspenso que más allá que te asuste que sean muy inesperados.

Finally the day had arrived when I would see one of the films that are called to be one of the best of the horror genre of this year 2022. I consider myself a big fan of this style of films but also understanding that making a really good and gripping story is usually very complicated and almost always goes wrong, hence there are very few film titles that are really worth watching throughout recent history. Horror has to have, in my opinion, the perfect mix between a gore content and a dose of suspense that, beyond scaring you, is very unexpected.

Habiendo dicho esto, The Black Phone cuenta con esos requisitos? - la verdad yo creo que si, es una película muy buena, con unas interpretaciones espectaculares, con algunas referencias a otros films del genero y que al final del día te logra atrapar con su trama. Pero, y llegamos al bendito pero, muy personalmente yo esperaba un poco más para todo lo que se había dicho y se sigue diciendo, creo que es muy cosa mía porque soy muy exigente con el terror pero si me quedé esperando ese extra que me hace pensar y decir: "vaya palo de película". Tampoco hay que malinterpretar, como ya dije es un film que vale mucho la pena de ver, no se si será de los mejores pero cumple bastante. Hablemos entonces un poco más acerca de lo nuevo de Ethan Hawke...

Having said that, does The Black Phone meet those requirements? - I really think so, it is a very good movie, with spectacular performances, with some references to other films of the genre and at the end of the day it manages to catch you with its plot. But, and we get to the blessed but, very personally I expected a little more for all that had been said and is still being said, I think it's very much my thing because I am very demanding with horror but if I was waiting for that extra that makes me think and say: "what a movie stick". I don't want to misunderstand, as I said it's a film that is worth watching, I don't know if it will be one of the best but it is quite good. So let's talk a little more about Ethan Hawke's new movie...

La historia está ambientada a finales de los años setenta en un pueblo de Colorado, Estados Unidos. Es un pueblo pequeño y con nada fuera de lo extraordinario salvo por un detalle: hay un secuestrador que está raptando a los niños que allí viven. Son varios los protagonistas en esta ola de secuestros pero uno solo es el que resalta, Finney (Mason Thames), un joven extremadamente inteligente e introvertido que por desgracia cae en manos de este "mago" de segunda. Finney tiene una hermana, Gwen (Madeleine McGraw) quien es su apoyo, su amiga, defensora y que además tiene un don muy particular y misterioso que para conocerlo tendrán que ver la película. La nombro porque es vital para la trama y porque su actuación es de lo mejor que vi.

The story is set in the late seventies in a town in Colorado, USA. It is a small town with nothing out of the ordinary except for one detail: there is a kidnapper who is abducting the children who live there. There are several protagonists in this wave of kidnappings but only one stands out, Finney (Mason Thames), an extremely intelligent and introverted young man who unfortunately falls into the hands of this second rate "magician". Finney has a sister, Gwen (Madeleine McGraw) who is his support, his friend, defender and who also has a very particular and mysterious gift that you will have to see the film to know. I mention her because she is vital to the plot and because her performance is one of the best I saw.

La cosa es que este asesino/raptor que no es otro que (Ethan Hawke) lleva a sus victimas a un viejo sótano donde los deja encerrados sin ningún motivo aparente o por lo menos eso es lo que se piensa. El detalle de todo esto y de la película en si es que en la pared de ese sótano hay un teléfono negro, uno que tiene una característica muy especial y para no dar muchos spoilers lo único que les voy a mencionar es que dicha peculiaridad tiene que ver con el mundo paranormal. A partir de acá la trama se va a centrar en como Finney busca salir de aquel lugar y en donde evidentemente veremos como se va forjando esa relación entre el secuestrado con el secuestrador.

The thing is that this killer/raptor who is none other than (Ethan Hawke) takes his victims to an old basement where he leaves them locked up for no apparent reason or at least that's what you think. The detail of all this and of the film itself is that on the wall of that basement there is a black phone, one that has a very special feature and not to give too many spoilers the only thing I will mention is that this peculiarity has to do with the paranormal world. From here the plot will focus on how Finney tries to get out of that place and where we will obviously see how the relationship between the kidnapped and the kidnapper is forged.

Lo primero que quiero decir es que esta trama está basada en hechos reales, claramente hay toques de ficción pero si fueron hechos que ocurrieron hace un tiempo, de hecho el niño secuestrado en aquel entonces se llamaba Steven Stayner y el secuestrador era Kenneth Parnell por si quieren investigar un poco, la verdad es que la historia es bastante turbia. Pero bueno, más allá del terror esta película es un thriller psicológico lleno de mucho suspenso, lo cual es uno de sus puntos más favorables, la capacidad que tuvo Scott Derrickson de crear las atmosferas llenas de tensión, ambientes sombríos y desoladores, buenos juegos de cámaras y buenas fotografías junto a una aceptable banda sonora hacen que la experiencia sea realmente buena, por momentos te sumerges y si, te llevas un par de sustos también.

The first thing I want to say is that this plot is based on real events, clearly there are touches of fiction but if they were events that occurred some time ago, in fact the kidnapped boy at that time was named Steven Stayner and the kidnapper was Kenneth Parnell if you want to investigate a little, the truth is that the story is quite murky. But well, beyond the horror this movie is a psychological thriller full of suspense, which is one of its most favorable points, Scott Derrickson's ability to create atmospheres full of tension, gloomy and desolate environments, good camerawork and good photography along with an acceptable soundtrack make the experience really good, at times you get immersed and yes, you get a couple of scares too.

Hay un toque con lo paranormal que está bien usado, no se exagera pero tampoco se pasa por debajo de la mesa, es el adecuado para darle contexto a la trama y entender un par cosas. Esto siempre es bueno porque por lo general cuando es terror hay poco de este elemento, todo se centra en la sangre y en la agonía y sufrimiento de las victimas; acá también hay un poco de eso pero repito, con toques en aquello que nuestros ojos no ven. Aquí es crucial lo que nombré antes, para que estos elementos funcionen tiene que existir lo impredecible y acá gracias a una buena dirección se consigue, son pequeños efectos que hacen que una escena pase de ser simple a una realmente aterradora.

There is a touch with the paranormal that is well used, it is not exaggerated but it is not under the table, it is adequate to give context to the plot and understand a couple of things. This is always good because usually when it is horror there is little of this element, everything is focused on the blood and the agony and suffering of the victims; here there is also a little of that but I repeat, with touches on what our eyes do not see. Here it is crucial what I mentioned before, for these elements to work there must be unpredictability and here thanks to good direction it is achieved, they are small effects that make a scene go from being simple to a really scary one.

Otro de los elementos que de igual manera hacen que una película de terror sea aceptable es su contenido gore. En The Black Phone si bien es verdad hay un poco de eso tampoco y de la misma forma que pasa con lo paranormal es excesivo y eso es algo que en lo personal aplaudo. Películas con cantidades desproporcionadas de sangre y violencia sin ningún tipo de sentido son cosas que restan en vez de sumar. Si algo tiene este film es que supo medir perfectamente estas cosas para que la película sea un buen terror y no una parodia mal hecha.

Another element that also makes a horror film acceptable is its gore content. In The Black Phone, while it is true that there is a little bit of it, and in the same way that happens with the paranormal, it is excessive and that is something that I personally applaud. Films with disproportionate amounts of blood and violence without any kind of sense are things that subtract instead of adding. If there's one thing this film has, it's that it knew how to perfectly measure these things so that the film is a good horror and not a poorly made parody.

Hablando un poco de los personajes comencemos por Mason y Madeleine, los más jóvenes. Quedé realmente impresionado por las actuaciones de estos dos niños, sus personajes tienen una carga psicológica importante lo que hace que la interpretación sea más pesada y el trasfondo de sus acciones vayan de la mano con las cosas que viven en su día a día, rápidamente se darán cuenta de eso. Hay una escena en particular con Madeleine que creo que le parte en dos el alma a quien la ve, lo digo porque me pasó, y que con ella esa joven actriz se ganó mi respeto. Y a Mason por todo lo que le ha tocado vivir también tuvo que hacer gala de escenas de valentía y fuerza de voluntad. La verdad un 10 el trabajo de estos pequeños actores.

Talking a bit about the characters let's start with Mason and Madeleine, the youngest ones. I was really impressed by the performances of these two children, their characters have an important psychological burden which makes the interpretation heavier and the background of their actions go hand in hand with the things they live in their day to day, you will quickly realize that. There is one scene in particular with Madeleine that I think breaks the soul in two who sees it, I say that because it happened to me, and that with it that young actress earned my respect. And Mason also had to show scenes of courage and willpower because of all that he had to live through. The truth is a 10 for the work of these little actors.

En cuanto a Ethan Hawke estamos hablando de un actor de más consagrado capaz de hacer el papel que le pongan enfrente. A él lo he visto mucho últimamente, en Moon Knight, The Northman y todos ellos personajes distintos y todos hechos de gran forma. En esta oportunidad sacó su parte más oscura, siniestra y perturbadora para darle vida a un asesino sociópata con probablemente muchas carencias emocionales. Es de esos personajes que ponen incomodo al espectador, que son impredecibles, que todo su accionar es una sorpresa rodeado de una maldad pura. Ethan lo volvió a hacer, dio vida a un personaje que no nos extrañe se convierta en una figura de la cultura pop de aquí en adelante. Puede que me haya faltado conocer un poco más acerca de él pero aún así, muy buen personaje.

As for Ethan Hawke, we are talking about a more established actor capable of playing any role that is put in front of him. I've seen him a lot lately, in Moon Knight, The Northman and all of them different characters and all done in a great way. This time he brought out his darkest, most sinister and disturbing side to give life to a sociopathic killer with probably a lot of emotional deficiencies. He is one of those characters that make the viewer uncomfortable, that are unpredictable, that all his actions are a surprise surrounded by pure evil. Ethan did it again, he gave life to a character that will become a pop culture figure from now on. I may have missed knowing a little more about him but still, very good character.

Finalmente que queda por decirles? - pues que si, estamos con una aceptable película de terror, es muy buena y mejor que muchas de las que hemos visto últimamente pero que tampoco es el Santo Grial del genero como muchas veces leí por ahí. Cumple con todo lo que el terror pide para que sea disfrutable pero repito, muy personalmente esperé un poquito más. Aún así la recomiendo a todo el mundo, sin dudas es una película que deberían de ver por las grandes actuaciones que hay y todo ese ambiente macabro y sombrío que la rodea que como se darán cuenta es de lo mejor del film.

Finally, what's left to tell you? - Well, yes, we are with an acceptable horror movie, it is very good and better than many of the ones we have seen lately but it is not the Holy Grail of the genre as many times I read around. It complies with everything that horror requires to be enjoyable but I repeat, I personally expected a little more. I still recommend it to everyone, it is definitely a movie you should see for the great performances and all the macabre and gloomy atmosphere that surrounds it, which as you will notice is the best of the film.

Le doy un 8/10, no es para nada una mala nota pero fácilmente pudo tener un 9 o hasta más. Tiene una duración de un poco más de hora y media y está en las salas de cine. Les dejo el tráiler para aquellos que no hayan visto nada acerca de ella. Vayan a verla, no se queden sin hacerlo.

I give it an 8/10, not a bad score at all but it could easily have been a 9 or even higher. It has a running time of a little over an hour and a half and is in theaters. I leave you with the trailer for those of you who haven't seen anything about it. Go see it, don't miss it.
