It's 2026, and it's unbelievable that we're still seeing movies about killer sharks hungry for human blood. It's been proven time and again that these animals don't attack humans for no reason; in fact, they may be more afraid of us than humans are of them. Furthermore, they'll prefer the salty blood of other fish to human blood, but Amazon and the director of this film, Jeff Wadlow, chose not to consider this. Why do I say this? Because the moment we see inappropriate behavior in a real animal, movies cease to be serious and become parodies, and that's essentially what we see in "The Devil's Mouth"
Estamos en pleno 2026 y parece mentira que todavía estemos viendo películas con temáticas de tiburones asesinos y hambrientos de sangre humana. Se ha demostrado una y otra vez que estos animales no atacan a los humanos porque si, de hecho ellos pueden que nos tengan más miedo a nosotros de lo que las personas puedan sentir hacia ellos. Es más, van a preferir la sangre salada de otros peces que la humana, pero eso la gente de Amazon y el director de esto, Jeff Wadlow, no lo quisieron tomar en cuenta. Por que digo esto? - pues porque en el momento cuando vemos un comportamiento que no es el adecuado en un animal real las películas dejan de ser serias y se convierten en parodias y algo así es lo que se ve en "La boca del diablo".
I decide to watch it thinking that the threat would be of a different type but no, to my disappointment I was in charge of another film where a demon shark was going to be one of its kind. The story begins with 5 friends who are traveling in Thailand trying to live some last adventures before entering the adult world. Two couples and the organizer of everything, Sara, decide to visit a cave complex called "The Devil's Mouth." They are the typical carefree young people, who believe that they know everything and that anything for them is nothing as long as they have a good time. In fact, at the beginning of the film we are already presented with a situation that gives us an idea of the type of people they are.
Decido verla pensando que la amenaza sería de otro tipo pero no, para mi decepción estaba al frente de otra película en donde un tiburón endemoniado iba a ser de las suyas. La historia comienza con 5 amigos que están de viaje en Tailandia tratando de vivir unas últimas aventuras antes de meterse en el mundo adulto. Dos parejas y la organizadora de todo, Sara, deciden visitar un complejo de cuevas llamado "La boca del diablo". Son los típicos jóvenes despreocupados, que creen que se las saben todas y que cualquier cosa para ellos es la nada con tal de pasarla bien. De hecho al principio del film ya se nos presenta una situación que nos da a entender el tipo de personas que son.
Once they embark on this adventure, accompanied by an expert guide, it seems there's no turning back. These caves offer several routes, but they—or rather, one member of the group, Max (Lana Condor), who makes all the decisions—choose the most complicated and longest path because, of course, she knows more than the guide himself. Inside the caves, the nightmare for these people has only just begun, as a beast (a bull shark) lurks beneath the waters, its objective, according to the plot's logic, being intent on killing them all. From this point on, the story unfolds entirely within these caves, creating a feeling of claustrophobia and anguish. This is one of the few things I'll acknowledge about this film; it plays very effectively with that irrational fear of being trapped and not knowing exactly where the threat lies. Adding to this the fact that they're underwater only intensifies that fear.
Una vez adentrados en esta aventura, a la cual van con un guía experto, pareciera que no hay vuelta atrás. Estas cuevas tienen varios recorridos pero ellos o más bien una del grupo que es la decide todo, Max (Lana Condor), deciden tomar el camino más complicado y largo porque claro, ella sabe más que el propio guía. Ya dentro de las cuevas la pesadilla para estas personas apenas comienza y es que debajo de esas aguas acecha una bestia (un tiburón toro) el cual, según la lógica de la trama, tiene como objetivo matarlos a todos. A partir de acá la trama se desarrolla en el interior de estas cuevas haciendo que la sensación sea de claustrofobia y angustia. Esto que acabo de decir es de las pocas cosas que le voy a reconocer a esta película, juega muy bien con ese miedo irracional de estar encerrado y con el no saber exactamente donde está la amenaza. Si a esto le sumamos que están dentro del agua pues ese miedo se acrecienta un poco más.
Now, let's talk about how things unfold. It's well known that sharks don't behave this way, which, for me, already undermines the seriousness of the plot. The animal itself isn't scary; the fact that it's being hunted and pursued is what might be unsettling. And it's not scary because it doesn't just look fake, it's downright unrealistic; the mechanization and the CGI used are blatantly obvious. Making a shark look real is extremely difficult, and I personally think that didn't happen here. The deaths are predictable, the typical kind where the shark practically plays with the bodies—nothing shocking. I think another thing worth highlighting is the survival instinct of one of the characters, Sara (Kathryn Newton), the best thing about this film. Without her, everything would have been flatter and more boring; without a doubt, the entire film rested on her shoulders.
Ahora, hablemos de como se van dando las cosas. Ya se sabe que los tiburones no actúan así por lo que para mi ya le quita seriedad a la trama. El animal no da miedo, el estar siendo cazados y perseguidos es lo que puede que angustie. Y no da miedo porque no se ve falso, sino lo siguiente a eso; es muy evidente lo mecanizado que está y el CGI usado. Hacer un tiburón que se vea real es sumamente complicado y acá personalmente pienso que eso no pasó. Las muertes son las esperadas, las típicas en donde el tiburón prácticamente juega con los cuerpos, nada impresionable. Creo que otra de las cosas también debería de rescatar es el instinto de supervivencia de uno de los personajes, Sara (Kathryn Newton), la mejor de esta película. Sin ella todo hubiese sido más plano y aburrido, sin dudas todo el film estuvo en sus hombros.
Yes, this could be considered more of a survival thriller than a horror film. It could also be a suspense thriller, but to call it horror is an insult to the genre. Surprisingly, the acting was good, which is what you'd expect from a plot like this where friends get into trouble. I think many people might actually enjoy this movie and find it entertaining, and I don't blame them. When I see things like this, I get very cynical and ironic because it's not something that would happen in real life, but it's part of fiction, and I can understand that. For passing the time when there's nothing else to watch, I think it's perfect, so yes, I'm recommending it even though I didn't like it; in the end, tastes are subjective. It's just over an hour and a half long. I'll leave the trailer here for you to check out.
Y es que si, esto pudiera ser un thriller de supervivencia más allá que un terror. Suspenso igualmente pudiera ser pero catalogar a esto como un terror es un insulto al género. Las actuaciones sorpresivamente estuvieron bien, es lo que puedes esperar de una trama así en la cual los amigos se meten en problemas. Creo que a muchas personas puede que de verdad les guste y les parezca entretenida esta película y no los culpo. Cuando veo estas cosas me vuelvo muy cínico e irónico porque no es algo que pasaría en la realidad pero es parte de la ficción y eso lo puedo entender. Para pasar un rato en el que no hay nada que ver creo que está perfecta así que si, se las estoy recomendando a pesar de que no me gustó, al final los gustos son subjetivos. Dura poco más de hora y media. Les dejo el tráiler para que le echen un ojo.
