Por allá en 1973 se estrenó una película que revolucionaría la historia del cine y del genero del terror para siempre, sería una que hasta el día de hoy es considerada de lo mejor jamás hecho y un film totalmente de culto. Cincuenta años después quien nos diría que volveríamos a ver una secuela de aquel clásico, uno que han intentado imitar cientos de veces pero no ha sido posible, estamos hablando de una película en donde la propia Linda Blair quedó con ciertas "marcas" a lo interno dada lo fuerte y exigente que fue la experiencia de grabar ese film. Pero si, en pleno 2023 llega El Exorcista con una historia ya conocida y que busca revivir glorias pasadas.

Back in 1973 a film was released that would revolutionize the history of cinema and the horror genre forever, it would be one that to this day is considered one of the best ever made and a totally cult film. Fifty years later who would have thought that we would see a sequel to that classic, one that they have tried to imitate hundreds of times but has not been possible, we are talking about a film where Linda Blair herself was left with certain "marks" internally given how strong and demanding was the experience of recording that film. But yes, in the middle of 2023 comes The Exorcist with an already known story that seeks to revive past glories.

Cuando me enteré que este film saldría la verdad no supe que sentir, si miedo por pensar que podían dañar lo que ya estaba hecho, expectación por querer ver que novedad habría que la diferenciara de las tantas otras o simplemente indiferencia por el hecho de que el terror es muy complicado de lograr. Si viste aquella película sabrás más o menos lo que esperar de esta, ese era mi pensamiento, sabía lo que me iba a encontrar. Terminó siendo lo esperado? - la verdad si, no podía creer que esta película, mientras la veía, no me estaba resultando tan nefasta como en algún momento pude pensar. El error está en comparar, no lo hagan, desde ya se los digo. Vayamos entonces y hablemos un poco de esta nueva entrega.

When I found out that this film would be released, I didn't really know what to feel, if it was fear for thinking that they could damage what was already done, expectation for wanting to see what would make it different from the many others, or simply indifference for the fact that horror is very complicated to achieve. If you saw that movie you will know more or less what to expect from this one, that was my thought, I knew what I was going to find. Did it end up being what I expected? - The truth is yes, I couldn't believe that this movie, while I was watching it, wasn't being as bad as I thought it would be. The mistake is in comparing, don't do it, I'm telling you. Let's go then and talk a little bit about this new release.

Como ya les dije esta historia se ubica unos cincuenta años después de aquellos sucesos de Regan MacNeil. Lo primero a saber es que tenemos a Víctor Fielding (Leslie Odom Jr.) un hombre felizmente casado pero que la desgracia llega pronto a su vida ya que en aquel terremoto de Haití del 2010 perdió a su esposa la cual estaba embarazada de la fue su hija, Angela (Lidya Jewett). Pasó el tiempo y a pesar de que esos fantasmas del pasado siguen rondando en sus vidas todo parece indicar que han superado aquello, Angela es una joven feliz con una excelente relación con su padre. Un buen día Angela junto a Katherine (Olivia O'Neill), su mejor amiga, deciden ir a un bosque a experimentar cosas que están fuera de su entendimiento siendo ese momento el inicio de la pesadilla.

As I already told you this story is set some fifty years after the events of Regan MacNeil. The first thing to know is that we have Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom Jr.) a happily married man but that misfortune comes soon to his life because in that earthquake in Haiti in 2010 he lost his wife who was pregnant with his daughter, Angela (Lidya Jewett). Time has passed and although the ghosts of the past still haunt their lives, it seems that they have moved on, Angela is a happy young woman with an excellent relationship with her father. One day Angela and Katherine (Olivia O'Neill), her best friend, decide to go to a forest to experience things that are beyond their understanding, being that moment the beginning of the nightmare.

Al estar tres días desaparecidas para después regresar ya nada es igual, algo en ellas cambió. A medida que pasaron los días comenzaron a ocurrir cosas inexplicables y aterradoras, algo en esas jóvenes había emergido para traer el mal a sus familias. Antes la desesperación y el no saber que hacer, Víctor acude a la única persona que había experimentado algo así, Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn), la madre de Regan. A partir de acá da inicio una lucha entre el bien y el mal, veremos como la fe y la unión entre las personas puede ser la respuesta y solución para frenar a estas fuerzas del mal. Si alguna vez han visto una película en donde el tema principal sean posesiones demoníacas y este tipo de temáticas creo que sabrán lo que les espera, la diferencia acá es que según yo, esta está medianamente bien lograda.

When they were missing for three days and then returned nothing was the same, something in them changed. As the days passed, inexplicable and terrifying things began to happen, something in these young women had emerged to bring evil to their families. Before the desperation and not knowing what to do, Victor goes to the only person who had experienced something like this, Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn), Regan's mother. From here begins a struggle between good and evil, we will see how faith and the union between people can be the answer and solution to stop these forces of evil. If you have ever seen a movie where the main theme is demonic possessions and this kind of themes I think you will know what to expect, the difference here is that according to me, this one is moderately well done.

La trama de este film no me pareció nada del otro mundo, de hecho diría que es hasta lo más cliché que vas a ver. Que pasa? - que a pesar de eso creo que no es lo relevante, lo que realmente importa es la conexión que hay con MacNeil, para mi ese es el verdadero gancho de la película, lo que la hace un poco más "interesante" y lo que la puede diferenciar de las demás. Por esto es mejor? - no, pero crea un valor agregado, una conexión en lo que a la nostalgia se refiere. La razón de ser de este film no es otro que seguir forzando y alargando una historia a la que se le ha pedido mucho ya y a la que creo se debería dejar tranquila. Es verdad que en el aire hay como cierto olor a venganza entre este demonio y MacNeil que puede que se traslade a la historia de estas niñas; esto quizás es lo más interesante de todo.

The plot of this film didn't strike me as anything special, in fact I'd say it's about as cliché as you're going to see. What happens? - In spite of that I think it's not relevant, what really matters is the connection with MacNeil, for me that's the real hook of the film, what makes it a little more "interesting" and what can differentiate it from the others. Is it better because of this? - No, but it creates an added value, a connection in terms of nostalgia. The raison d'être of this film is none other than to keep forcing and lengthening a story that has already been asked for a lot and that I think should be left alone. It is true that in the air there is a certain whiff of revenge between this demon and MacNeil that may be transferred to the story of these girls; this is perhaps the most interesting thing of all.

En cuanto a escenas propias de terror creo que este departamento, bajo mi opinión, estuvo bien logrado. Miren que es difícil conseguir que algo me convenza pero en honor a la verdad todo lo que tiene que ver con maquillaje y puestas en escenas la cosa no estuvo tan terrible como se podía suponer. El aspecto de las niñas estando poseídas para mi es vital porque es con lo que te quedas, es la cara del mal viéndote a los ojos y si eso se hace mal o poco convincente se pierde todo. Siento que buscaron emular mucho la cara de Linda Blair en su momento, el parecido de Katherine con Regan es notable y eso fue a propósito, es buscar la conexión de la que les hablaba anteriormente. Esta vez no hubo vomito de sopa de arvejas como en aquella ocasión pero si hubo sus momentos turbios que van de la mano con los síntomas de una persona poseída que pueden ser un poco gráficos.

As far as horror scenes go, I think this department, in my opinion, was well done. It's hard to get anything to convince me, but in all honesty, everything that has to do with makeup and staging was not as terrible as one might expect. The look of the girls being possessed for me is vital because that's what you're left with, it's the face of evil looking you in the eye and if that's done poorly or unconvincingly it loses everything. I feel like they sought to emulate Linda Blair's face a lot back in the day, Katherine's resemblance to Regan is remarkable and that was on purpose, it's looking for the connection I was talking about earlier. This time there was no pea soup vomit like that time but there were its shady moments that go hand in hand with the symptoms of a possessed person that can be a bit graphic.

La película dura un poco menos de dos horas, en lo personal no me aburrí en ningún momento, no perdí el interés aunque ya uno más o menos sepa el camino de la trama, de hecho al principio del film hay un ambiente de tensa calma que si puede general cierto suspenso y expectación. Entonces, da miedo? - yo no sentí miedo, es complicado que me asuste algo, no lo digo por creerme intocable sino porque de verdad es así. Si eres una persona sensible a estas cosas es probable que te asusten un par de cosas que se ven, no hay jumpscare relevantes pero si hay una especie de aura incomoda de a ratos. Como film de terror está bien, no es exagerada, que esa es otra de las cosas que pueden dañar la experiencia, creo que en ese sentido se cuidaron bastante bien.

The film lasts a little less than two hours, personally I was not bored at any time, I did not lose interest even though one more or less knows the path of the plot, in fact at the beginning of the film there is an atmosphere of tense calm that can generate some suspense and expectation. So, is it scary? - I didn't feel fear, it's difficult to be scared of something, I'm not saying this because I think I'm untouchable but because it really is. If you are a person sensitive to these things you will probably be scared by a couple of things you see, there is no relevant jumpscare but there is a kind of uncomfortable aura at times. As a horror film it's fine, it's not over the top, which is another thing that can damage the experience, I think they took good care of themselves in that sense.

Los personajes. Las protagonistas son los dos niñas, creo que estos papeles son exigentes, sino pregúnteselo a Linda Blair, y la forma en como lo llevaron pienso que estuvo más que bien. Yo no vi nada sobreactuado ni falso, creo que estas niñas se tomaron en serio la interpretación y lo hicieron lo mejor posible. De resto no destaco a más nadie, todos son promedio y los típicos. Me gustó ver a Ann Dowd quien es la famosa Tía Lydia en el Cuento de la Criada, una gran actriz con un personaje que pasa de ser secundario a uno casi principal. Repito, nada destacable en este departamento más allá de los dos jóvenes.

The characters. The leads are the two girls, I think these roles are demanding, if not ask Linda Blair, and the way they handled it I thought it was more than fine. I didn't see anything overacted or fake, I think these girls took the interpretation seriously and did their best. The rest I don't single out anyone else, they are all average and typical. I liked seeing Ann Dowd who is the famous Aunt Lydia in The Handmaid's Tale, a great actress with a character that goes from being secondary to an almost main character. I repeat, nothing remarkable in this department beyond the two young men.

Le doy un 6/10 por el intento. Pudiese ser más bajo pero de verdad creo que el final del film estuvo interesante, ahí subieron un poco los puntos. Creo que vale la pena verla solo por el hecho de que forma parte de una gran referencia del genero y por cultura popular y tener un tema de conversación. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo para que le echan un ojo.

I give it a 6/10 for the attempt. It could have been lower but I really think the end of the film was interesting, that's where the points went up a bit. I think it's worth seeing just for the fact that it's part of a great reference of the genre and for popular culture and to have a topic of conversation.
