Dentro del terror hay varios subgéneros, puede estar el slasher, todo lo gore, ciencia ficción llevada al terror, un buen thriller, el famoso terror psicológico y todo lo que rodea lo paranormal. Pero dentro de este último hay dos ramas más, los fantasmas y espectros y las posesiones demoniacas y es acá precisamente donde aterrizamos. Soy fan del terror, bastante, pero hay una verdad innegable y es que es un género muy complicado de complacer ya que por lo general son contadas con los dedos de las manos las buenas películas que abarquen todo lo que dije anteriormente siendo las de exorcismos quizás y por lo menos para mi, las que de repente puede que salven un poco los papeles. Películas como El Rito, el exorcismo de Emily Rose o la mundialmente conocida El Exorcista de 1973 con Linda Blair son quizás y de las que he visto las que puede que su trabajo lo hayan medianamente bien.

Within horror there are several subgenres, there can be the slasher, everything gore, science fiction taken to horror, a good thriller, the famous psychological horror and everything that surrounds the paranormal. But within the latter there are two more branches, ghosts and specters and demonic possessions and this is precisely where we land. I'm a fan of horror, quite a lot, but there is an undeniable truth and it is that it is a very complicated genre to please since generally good movies that cover everything I said above are counted on the fingers of one's hands, being the exorcism ones perhaps and at least for me, the ones that suddenly can save the papers a little bit. Films like The Rite, The Exorcism of Emily Rose or the world famous The Exorcist of 1973 with Linda Blair are perhaps the ones I've seen that may have done a fairly good job.

Esta película del día de hoy no voy a negar que me tenía dubitativo porque nunca se sabe, estamos en un terreno difícil en donde algo puede ser muy bueno o tremendamente malo, la cosa es que siento que este film está en una especie de limbo entre ambos extremos, no es la mejor película que se van a encontrar pero es una que se deja ver sin problemas. Otro factor a considerar es que si tu como espectador eres creyente de este tipo de cosas, si la respuesta es si puede que te parezca un poco más interesante ya que hay un contexto y trasfondo intrigante, si es negativa la respuesta pues todo esto seguramente te parecerá una ciencia ficción un tanto pobre. Pero bueno sin más vayamos y hablemos un poco de lo que es esta última apuesta por el terror demoniaco.

This film today I will not deny that it had me hesitant because you never know, we are in a difficult terrain where something can be very good or tremendously bad, the thing is that I feel that this film is in a kind of limbo between both extremes, it is not the best film you are going to find but it is one that can be seen without problems. Another factor to consider is that if you as a viewer are a believer in this kind of thing, if the answer is yes you might find it a little more interesting since there is an intriguing context and background, if the answer is negative then all this will surely seem a bit poor science fiction. But well without further ado let's go and talk a little about what is this last bet on demonic terror.

Hay que decir que esta historia está basada en un personaje real, el padre Gabriele Amorth (Russell Crowe), Este cura fue uno de los exorcistas con los que contaba el Vaticano y que en vida hizo más de cien mil exorcismos ya que murió en el 2016. Esta película cuenta la historia de este sacerdote encargándose de una posesión un tanto particular y es que en España, en una antigua abadía, un niño aparentemente cayó prisionero por uno de los demonios más poderosos, uno de los reyes del infierno. Como siempre la incredulidad es algo que reina en estos casos y es que nadie espera que esto sea la razón de los comportamientos que el joven Henry está experimentando últimamente.

It must be said that this story is based on a real character, Father Gabriele Amorth (Russell Crowe), this priest was one of the exorcists with whom the Vatican counted and who in life made more than one hundred thousand exorcisms since he died in 2016. This film tells the story of this priest taking care of a somewhat particular possession and that is that in Spain, in an ancient abbey, a child apparently fell prisoner by one of the most powerful demons, one of the kings of hell. As always, incredulity is something that reigns in these cases and no one expects that this is the reason for the behavior that young Henry is experiencing lately.

Pero no todo termina acá y es que una vez el padre Gabriele llega al lugar se comienza a dar cuenta de algo que no cuadra del todo y es que presuntamente aquel sitio ya tenia cierta historia con el Vaticano, es decir, no es primera vez que aquella abadía generaba inconvenientes. Así que con el pasar del tiempo las piezas comienzan a encajar hasta llevar a la conclusión de que todo aquello corresponde a una gran conspiración la cual el mismo Vaticano ha estado encubriendo desesperadamente a lo largo de la historia y hoy en día pretende que así siga sucediendo. Como ven además del toque de terror también existe un poco de ciencia ficción, o no, con respecto a toda la conspiración que hay por detrás; esto sin duda es un valor añadido importante a la trama.

But not everything ends here and once Father Gabriele arrives at the place he begins to realize something that does not quite fit and is that allegedly that site already had some history with the Vatican, that is, it is not the first time that abbey generated problems. So, as time goes by, the pieces begin to fit together and lead to the conclusion that all that corresponds to a great conspiracy which the Vatican itself has been desperately covering up throughout history and today intends to keep it that way. As you can see, besides the touch of horror, there is also a bit of science fiction, or not, with respect to the whole conspiracy behind it; this is undoubtedly an important added value to the plot.

Vamos a comenzar por partes. Primero la historia. Todas estas tramas que involucran cosas ocultas a través de pistas que finalmente llevan a la respuesta final por más trilladas y clichés que sean, no dejan de ser entretenidas. Y es que si, como ya dije quiero pensar que es pura ciencia ficción lo que plantean aunque con el Vaticano nunca se sabe, son más grandes los secretos que ellos guardan que lo que uno sabe de ellos. Creo que es porque a mi gusta la historia y la cultura general pero sinceramente me enganché a todo el trasfondo de lo que pasaba en aquella abadía, porque no es solo el demonio que poseyó al niño de la nada, hay una razón de ser detrás de todo y eso me llamó la atención, por lo menos hicieron que la historia tuviera un poco más de profundidad y eso se agradece.

Let's start by parts. First the story. All these plots that involve hidden things through clues that finally lead to the final answer, no matter how trite and cliché they are, they are still entertaining. And yes, as I said, I want to think that it is pure science fiction what they propose, although with the Vatican you never know, the secrets they keep are bigger than what you know about them. I think it's because I like history and general culture but honestly I got hooked to all the background of what happened in that abbey, because it's not just the demon that possessed the boy out of nowhere, there is a reason behind everything and that caught my attention, at least they made the story have a little more depth and that is appreciated.

Segundo, los efectos visuales. Para que estos films sean un poco más creíbles tienen que estar acompañados de unos buenos efectos especiales y sobre todos visuales y esta película hay que decir que ese departamento estuvo decente, no extraordinario pero si pasable. Todo lo que tiene que ver con maquillaje o el propio CGI es algo que se aprecia a medida que va avanzando la historia, tiene sus cosas mejorables, en especial hacia el final de la película, pero general no tengo tanta queja. Hubo algo que en su momento me impactó y fue la cara del niño una vez la posesión estaba más desarrollada, son esos detalles los que al final generan un poco más de impresión a la hora de ver la pantalla.

Second, the visual effects. For these films to be a little more credible they have to be accompanied by good special effects and especially visual ones, and this movie was decent, not extraordinary but passable. Everything that has to do with makeup or CGI itself is something that is appreciated as the story progresses, it has its things that can be improved, especially towards the end of the film, but overall I have no complaints. There was something that struck me at the time and it was the face of the child once the possession was more developed, it is those details that in the end generate a little more impression at the time of seeing the screen.

Entonces, para ser terror da miedo?, asusta? - no soy persona de asustarse fácil, en mi caso el factor sorpresa o lo impredecible de una acción es lo que puede generar ese "jump scare" al momento de estar viendo algo, por lo que en esta película siento que eso no existe. No me asusté en ningún momento, no hubo motivos porque hay algo que siempre hago y es anticiparme a todo lo que va a pasar por lo que casi siempre estoy preparado a lo que salga. No digo que otra persona no se vaya a asustar, es sabido que hay gente sensible a estas cosas y puede que si les afecte pero en mi caso no fue así. SI Hay elementos que pueden llegar a impresionar pero repito todo dependerá de la persona.

So, for a horror film, it's scary, scary? - I'm not a person who scares easily, in my case the surprise factor or the unpredictability of an action is what can generate that "jump scare" at the moment of watching something, so in this film I feel that does not exist. I was not scared at any time, there was no reason because there is something I always do and that is to anticipate everything that is going to happen so I'm almost always prepared for whatever comes out. I am not saying that someone else will not be scared, it is known that some people are sensitive to these things and it may affect them but in my case it was not like that. Yes, there are elements that can make an impression, but I repeat, it all depends on the person.

En cuanto a los personajes pues hay que hablar de Russell Crowe. Acá es un cura muy rockstar, que dice malas palabras, que tiene una botella de whisky en su sotana, usa lentes de sol y anda en una Vespa por todos lados. Es el típico personaje que no le tiene miedo a nadie ni a nada porque la vida lo ha hecho así, de verdad que para mi hizo un papel bastante bueno, Russell Crowe es un actor muy polifacético y eso es un plus. Hay que hacer mención al niño, Peter DeSouza-Feighoney, quien sinceramente se lució porque hacer un papel de estas características siempre es complejo, requiere de un esfuerzo extra que considero no todo el mundo podría.

As for the characters, we have to talk about Russell Crowe. Here he is a very rockstar priest, who says bad words, who has a bottle of whiskey in his cassock, wears sunglasses and rides a Vespa everywhere. He is the typical character who is not afraid of anyone or anything because life has made him that way, he really did a pretty good role for me, Russell Crowe is a very versatile actor and that's a plus. We must mention the boy, Peter DeSouza-Feighoney, who honestly excelled because playing a role like this is always complex, it requires an extra effort that I think not everyone could.

Después de haber dicho todo a este film le doy un 7/10 únicamente porque el final, o las escenas finales no me cautivaron mucho que digamos, no estuvieron mal pero esto es una cuestión muy personal en cuanto a gustos. Una película que se puede ver perfectamente, no aburre, tiene un contexto interesante, decentes efectos y un Russell Crowe quien es encarna a un cura muy del siglo XXI cayendo un poco en lo bully. Dura un poco más de hora y media. Les dejo el tráiler y así le echan un ojo.

Having said all that I give this film a 7/10 only because the ending, or the final scenes did not captivate me much to say, they were not bad but this is a very personal matter of taste. A movie that is perfectly watchable, not boring, has an interesting context, decent effects and a Russell Crowe who plays a very 21st century priest falling a bit in the bully.
