We're continuing with Prime Video movies, and this time it's The Runner's turn, a thriller starring former Wonder Woman Gal Gadot and directed by Oscar winner Kevin Macdonald. Knowing this, what could possibly go wrong? My experience watching these generic movies on these platforms isn't usually the best, but of course, who can resist watching Gal Gadot act (even though many don't think she's that great of an actress) or, in this specific case, watching her run through London? Because yes, in this film we'll see the limits a mother will go to for her child, and the way she demonstrates it is by running. It sounds strange, but the truth is that the movie didn't end up being as awful as I expected, and all thanks to this woman's excellent physical condition.
Seguimos con las películas de Prime Video y esta vez le tocó el turno a The Runner, un thriller protagonizado por la ex Mujer Maravilla Gal Gadot y dirigido por el ganador de un Oscar Kevin Macdonald; sabiendo esto, que puede salir mal?. Mi experiencia viendo estas películas genéricas de estas plataformas generalmente no es la mejor pero claro, quien se puede resistir a no ver algo de Gal Gadot actuar (aunque muchos crean que no es tan buena actriz) o en este caso en especifico, verla correr por medio Londres. Porque si, en este film veremos los limites a los que puede llegar una madre por su hijo y la forma de demostrarlo es corriendo. Suena raro pero la verdad es que la película no terminó siendo tan nefasta como la esperaba y todo gracias a la buena condición física de esta mujer.
Maia Marten (Gal Gadot) is a prestigious and renowned lawyer who has handled numerous cases, some of them quite dangerous. One morning, she decides her son is old enough to go to school alone (despite being in London, it's a questionable decision), so he leaves, and she does the same to do her exercise routine, which is simply a short run. Everything is fine until it suddenly isn't. After a while, she receives a call from Noah's phone, only it's not him, but a man—the same one who had kidnapped him. In a call that ends up being active for almost the entire film, the man lays out a series of conditions if she wants her son to survive until the end of the day.
Maia Marten (Gal Gadot) es una abogada prestigiosa y de nombre la cual ha llevado varios casos, algunos de ellos un tanto peligrosos. Una mañana ella decide que su hijo está lo suficiente grande para irse solo al colegio (a pesar de ser Londres, es una decisión cuestionable) por lo que en efecto él se va y ella hace lo propio para hacer su rutina de ejercicio la cual es simplemente correr un rato. Todo bien hasta que sencillamente deja de estarlo. Al cabo de un rato recibe una llamada desde el teléfono de Noah, su hijo, solo que no era él sino un hombre, el mismo que lo había secuestrado. En una llamada que al final termina estando activa casi toda la película el hombre le pone una serie de condiciones si quiere que su hijo sobreviva al final del día.
Don't talk to anyone, always obey orders, and always arrive on time—these are some of the things this man asks of Maia. Oh, and of course, to run, to never stop, because otherwise she won't reach her destination on time. When I say that 80% of the film is watching Gal run through the streets of London, I'm not lying, and this might sound monotonous and tedious, but the reality is that it isn't, at least not as much as I imagined. There are several elements that drive the plot forward and ultimately make this film watchable. One is a mother's urgent need to find her son; being in that position must be desperate, and that feeling really comes across on screen. The second is that this desperation leads her to do things she wouldn't normally do in order to keep moving forward, so seeing her pushed to the limit adds a bit of action.
No hablar con nadie, siempre obedecer las ordenes y llegar siempre a tiempo, esas son algunas de las cosas que este hombre le pide a Maia, ah bueno y por supuesto, que corra, que nunca pare porque sino no va a llegar a tiempo a su destino. Cuando les digo que la película en un 80% es ver a Gal correr por las calles de Londres no les miento y esto puede parecer muy monótono y tedioso de ver pero la realidad es que no, por lo menos no lo fue tanto como lo imaginaba. Acá hay varios elementos de los que se alimenta la trama para poder avanzar y que al final ayudan a que este film se puede ver. Uno es la urgencia de una madre por encontrar a su hijo, estar en esa posicion debe de ser desesperante por lo que esa sensación logra traspasar la pantalla; lo segundo es que esa desesperación la lleva a hacer o cometer actos que no haría en pro de avanzar en su camino por lo que verla al limite ayuda un poco con la acción.
And the third factor is time. Having a countdown, a ticking timer, makes everything more traumatic. Running through London is complicated, I imagine, given the number of people; all of this encourages things to happen, accidents, something Maia will experience firsthand. If you add the kidnapper's demands to this, it ends up being a disastrous combination. The film isn't boring because something is always happening. It's true that you might think watching someone run for almost an hour and a half is tedious, but all the events Maia goes through somewhat dispel that thought. What's the best part? The ending. When everything reaches the climax of the plot and there's a recap of how it all happened, that's when we see that things weren't as we thought. That honestly surprised me; those plot twists were worth it. The idea is that you don't see it coming, and friends, I really didn't see it coming.
Y lo tercero es el factor tiempo. Al tener una cuenta atrás, un temporizador andando, hace que todo sea más traumático. Correr por Londres imagino es complicado dada la cantidad de personas, todo esto fomenta que pasen cosas o accidentes, algo que Maia vivirá en carne propia. Si a esto se le suma las exigencias del secuestrador pues termina siendo una combinación desastrosa. La película no es aburrida porque siempre pasa algo, es verdad que puedes pensar que ver a alguien correr por casi hora y media es fastidioso pero todos los acontecimientos que vive Maia apagan un poco ese pensamiento. Que es lo mejor? - el final. Cuando todo llega al clímax de la trama y viene un recuento de como pasó todo es cuando vemos que las cosas no fueron como se pensaba, eso sinceramente me sorprendió, esos plot twist valieron la pena. La idea es que no lo veas venir y amigos, de verdad no los vi venir.
There are clearly a series of hacks and technological breaches involved in making this happen, which I found exaggerated, but oh well, I suppose it was the only way to pull it off. The motivation for the kidnapping is clear but a bit flat; it's not explored in depth. Maybe it wasn't necessary, but those details are sometimes cool to know. Gal Gadot gives a decent performance here; it's not something worthy of a star, but she does the job. She externalizes that urgent and desperate drama without any problems. She's the only protagonist, so the film rests on her shoulders, and she's the only one who keeps it afloat. I did like it; it has its absurd and nonsensical moments, but it's a watchable movie. I repeat, I think that ending saves the day in an impressive way because otherwise, it would have been a disaster. I recommend it, but yes, it's just another run-of-the-mill film; it's entertaining, and that's about it. It's less than an hour and a half long. Claramente hay una serie de hackeos y vulneraciones tecnológicas para que esto se de que me parecieron exageradas pero bueno, asumo era la única forma de llevarlo cabo. La motivación del secuestro es clara pero un poco plana, no se profundiza en ella, a lo mejor no hacía falta pero esos detalles a veces son cool enterarse. Gal Gadot acá interpreta bien, no es algo digno de una estrella pero cumple, ese drama de urgencia y desesperación lo exterioriza sin problemas. Ella es la única protagonista así que el film está sobre sus hombres y es solo ella quien lo mantiene a flote. Si me gustó, tienes sus cosas un poco absurdas y sin sentido pero es una película que se puede ver. Repito, ese final de todo creo que salva los muebles de una manera impresionante porque sino todo hubiese sido un desastre. La recomiendo pero si, es una más del montón, sirve para entretenerse y ya. Dura menos de una hora y media. Les dejo el tráiler para que le echen un vistazo y decidan si vale la pena verla.
