El día de ayer finalmente llegó, ese en el que vería la película que más está dando de que hablar últimamente en esta temporada de premios y es que los que se ha logrado llevar no ha sido poca cosa, sin contar las ovaciones de pie y discursos muy emocionales y sentidos por parte de Brendan Fraser, uno de ellos en los premios SAG (vayan a escucharlo si no lo han hecho). El contexto emocional que tiene este hombre es gigantesco porque es alguien que estuvo retirado de las pantallas por muchos años lidiando con problemas personales por lo que verlo de regreso y entregándonos un papel y una actuacion como esta es algo que a cualquiera le arruga el corazón. Y si, de una vez lo digo: Brendan Fraser se va a llevar el Óscar gracias a este film, no lo duden.

Yesterday finally arrived, the day when I would see the movie that has been the most talked about lately in this awards season, and what it has managed to get has been no small thing, not to mention the standing ovations and very emotional and heartfelt speeches by Brendan Fraser, one of them at the SAG Awards (go listen to it if you haven't). The emotional context that this man has is gigantic because he is someone who was retired from the screen for many years dealing with personal issues so to see him come back and give us a role and a performance like this is something that will make anyone's heart shrivel. And yes, I'm saying it once and for all: Brendan Fraser is going to win the Oscar thanks to this film, don't doubt it.

Yo sabía que esta película iba a ser de emociones intensas, de esas que te hacen reflexionar sobre muchos ámbitos de la vida y una que también por todo esto iba a ser extremadamente cruda, la verdad? - es todo esto y mucho más. Porque no te confundas, esta historia no es sobre la obesidad mórbida y sus efectos sobre la salud, que si lo muestran; es sobre el como esa misma obesidad es el resultado de un quiebre emocional y mental por no ser capaz afrontar o lidiar con una serie de situaciones. Es simplemente echarse a morir y que la comida sea la encargada de llenar el vacío que una depresión, un luto o un problema familiar ha dejado en la vida de nuestro protagonista. Pero bueno sin más, vamos a adentrarnos un poco más en este magnifico film.

I knew that this film was going to be one of intense emotions, one of those that make you reflect on many areas of life and one that also because of all this was going to be extremely raw, the truth? - It is all this and much more. Because make no mistake, this story is not about morbid obesity and its effects on health, which it does show; it is about how that same obesity is the result of an emotional and mental breakdown due to not being able to face or deal with a series of situations. It is simply to lie down to die and that food is responsible for filling the void that a depression, a bereavement or a family problem has left in the life of our protagonist. But without further ado, let's delve a little deeper into this magnificent film.

Ese que ven allí es Charlie (Brendan Fraser) y es un profesor de inglés de un instituto que da clases online por la razones que ya se pueden imaginar. Es una persona solitaria a la cual hace mucho tiempo se le quitaron las ganas de vivir, no para llegar al punto de quitarse la vida en un instante pero si para hacer eso mismo poco a poco y que el proceso sea más lento y doloroso. Charlie no tiene el control de su vida en sus manos, el que esté vivo no depende de él, es una cuestión más del tiempo y de una amiga inseparable que tiene, Liz (Hong Chau) quien ha estado y sigue estando en los momentos más complicados de nuestro profesor. Como es posible que una persona llegue a ese estado? - esa es la pregunta que todos se hacen y que en menos de dos horas su director Darren Aronofsky nos las responderá.

The one you see there is Charlie (Brendan Fraser) and he is an English teacher at a high school who teaches online for the reasons you can imagine. He is a lonely person whose will to live was taken away a long time ago, not to get to the point of taking his own life in an instant but to do that very thing little by little and make the process slower and more painful. Charlie does not have control of his life in his hands, the fact that he is alive does not depend on him, it is a matter of time and an inseparable friend he has, Liz (Hong Chau) who has been and continues to be in the most complicated moments of our professor. How is it possible for a person to reach such a state? - That is the question that everyone is asking and in less than two hours its director Darren Aronofsky will answer them.

Charlie a pesar todo tuvo una vida y fue una que le trajo al mundo una hija, Ellie (Sadie Sink), una adolescente molesta con el mundo, con una rabia contenida y sin un rumbo fijo con la que nuestro protagonista tendrá que hacer las pases. Ya a partir de acá es cuando la trama, si podemos decir que este film la tiene, arranca y comenzamos a ver el día a día de este hombre el cual está hundido en una miseria muy profunda. El film se nos presenta tal cual viviendo el día a día de Charlie, empezamos un lunes y así vamos avanzando a lo largo de toda la semana. No les voy a mentir, hay muchos pasajes de la película en donde simplemente ver se hace difícil porque las imágenes son grotescas, es presenciar el deterioro de una persona que dejó de luchar, que el dolor y la culpa lo carcomieron por dentro y que ahora está en una especie mar a la deriva.

The film is presented to us as Charlie's day to day life, we start on a Monday and move through the week. I'm not going to lie, there are many passages of the film where simply watching is difficult because the images are grotesque, it is witnessing the deterioration of a person who stopped fighting, that pain and guilt ate him up inside and now he is in a kind of drifting sea.

Esta historia se desarrolla en cuatro paredes, no hay exteriores, ni una cinematografía de escandalo ni muchos menos escenas llamativas; todo es en un sofá, una cocina, y un cuarto. Por qué? - pues porque la historia no necesita más. Esto es meramente emocional, todo se basa en las relaciones, en la forma en como afrontas esas relaciones, en como lidias con fantasmas del pasado y sobre todo como gracias a las decisiones del presente puedes dictar sentencia para tu futuro. De las cosas que más me volaron la cabeza es la cantidad de "conflictos" o "issues" que tiene Charlie, la homosexualidad, el como eso lo llevó a apartarse de su familia, el luto de un ser querido, la culpa de no tener una relación sana con su hija y como si fuera poco hay un gran cuestionamiento con la fe y Dios, el como puede ser que la religión sea tan salvadora y destructiva para las personas.

This story takes place in four walls, there are no exteriors, no outrageous cinematography, and no flashy scenes; it's all on a couch, in a kitchen, and in a room. Why? - Because the story doesn't need more. This is purely emotional, it's all about relationships, how you deal with those relationships, how you deal with ghosts of the past and above all how, thanks to the decisions of the present, you can pass sentence for your future. One of the things that blew my mind is the amount of "conflicts" or "issues" that Charlie has, homosexuality, how that led him to move away from his family, the mourning of a loved one, the guilt of not having a healthy relationship with his daughter and as if that were not enough there is a big questioning with faith and God, how can religion be so saving and destructive for people.

Es muy denso todo, cuando les digo que los quiebres emocionales son peligrosos es porque Charlie es el vivo retrato de eso. Es una película que nos lleva a cuestionarnos muchas cosas, a ser un poco más introspectivos y ver si estamos haciendo las cosas medianamente bien, es buscar revisar si hay algo por ahí que requiera ser atendido porque sino después puede ser tarde. Y es que el centro de todo es la salud mental y lo importante que es cuidarla y tratar de menospreciarla lo menos posible porque es real, se sufre y puede ser peligrosa si no la tratamos a tiempo. Ajá pero la obesidad que? - amigos, la obesidad es una consecuencia, por lo menos en este caso en concreto. Que también requiere atención? - por supuesto y con Charlie también nos daremos cuenta de eso. Lo que quiero decir es que aunque parezca mentira no es el problema de fondo ni principal.

It's all very dense, when I say that emotional breakdowns are dangerous, it's because Charlie is the living portrait of that. It is a film that leads us to question many things, to be a little more introspective and see if we are doing things moderately well, it is looking to check if there is something out there that needs to be addressed because otherwise it may be too late. And the core of everything is mental health and how important it is to take care of it and try to underestimate it as little as possible because it is real, it is suffered and it can be dangerous if we do not treat it in time. Aha but what about obesity? - friends, obesity is a consequence, at least in this particular case. It also requires attention? - Of course and with Charlie we will also realize that. What I want to say is that although it may seem a lie, it is not the main problem.

Con que me quedo? - con la positividad de este señor. Ahí en donde lo ves es una persona que siempre va a buscar lo mejor de los demás, ya sea por culpa o porque así lo siente realmente. Toda la relación y la interacción con Ellie nos lleva a esto ultimo que les dije y se cierra con los diez minutos finales de la película que en lo personal me destruyeron por completo; es en esos 10 minutos en donde el Óscar le cayó del cielo a Brendan. Tenía tiempo que una película no me llegaba de la forma en como lo hizo esta y una de las razones de esta conclusión son los ojos de Charlie, por favor, si no la han visto vean sus ojos cuando hay dolor y sufrimiento o cuando emerge un tema sensible, bien dicen que los ojos son la puerta del alma.

What will I keep? - With the positivity of this gentleman. Wherever you see him, he is a person who will always look for the best in others, either out of guilt or because he really feels it. The whole relationship and interaction with Ellie leads us to the last thing I said and closes with the final ten minutes of the film that personally destroyed me completely; it is in those 10 minutes where the Oscar fell from the sky to Brendan. It has been a long time since a movie had touched me the way this one did and one of the reasons for this conclusion is Charlie's eyes, please, if you have not seen it, see his eyes when there is pain and suffering or when a sensitive subject emerges, they say that the eyes are the door to the soul.

Brendan Fraser acá fue un monstruo de la actuación, con todo ese maquillaje encima aún pudo darnos un papel que quedará marcado para toda la historia del cine moderno. Impecable todo lo que hizo, honestamente me dejó sin palabras. Creo que hubo un poco sentimientos propios a la hora de interpretar lo que hizo que el resultado fuera descomunal. No hay más que decir. Sadie Sink fue otra que haciendo un papel "simple" llegó y dejó huella, el presente y futuro de ella es gigantesco, no nos quedemos con Stranger Things, a partir de ahora recuérdenla con este personaje. Y por último no hablamos de Hong Chau pero ella es clave en esta historia, es la amiga incondicional que está pendiente de Charlie y que lo cuida pero lo que hace con las manos lo daña con los pies, es una relación extraña en donde lo que manda de verdad es el amor, porque si, a pesar de lo que verán o vieron hay un profundo cariño entre ellos dos.

Brendan Fraser here was a monster of acting, with all that makeup on top he was still able to give us a role that will be marked for the history of modern cinema. Everything he did was impeccable, honestly he left me speechless. I think there was a little bit of his own feelings when interpreting what made the result was huge. That's all there is to say. Sadie Sink was another one that playing a "simple" role came and left a mark, her present and future is gigantic, let's not stay with Stranger Things, from now on remember her with this character. And finally we do not talk about Hong Chau but she is key in this story, she is the unconditional friend who is pending of Charlie and who takes care of him but what she does with her hands she damages him with her feet, it is a strange relationship where what really rules is love, because yes, despite what you will see or saw there is a deep affection between the two of them.

9/10, no le doy el 10 porque no la perfección no existe o por lo menos es complicada de encontrar. Creo que ya dije todo, lo que queda es que vayan y la vean. Si les gusta el cine, las buenas historias y excelentes actuaciones es un deber que le echen un ojo. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.
