The last movie of the week, and it's a new release on Netflix with an incredible cast. Some names: Robert De Niro, Michael Keaton, Michelle Monaghan, and Adam Scott. It's impossible not to get excited knowing that these actors are going to share a story, and that it's a psychological thriller and suspense film. As soon as I saw the poster, I knew there was something good in this movie; you don't put these names together just to make anything. And indeed, we have a story that will keep you glued to the screen for almost two hours, trying to solve a case that involves all the characters. I think it's a great privilege to see people like De Niro and Keaton in films on digital platforms, but especially in quality stories that are definitely worth watching.
Última película de mi semana y es una recién estrenada en Netflix la cual cuenta con una locura de elenco. Algunos nombres: Robert De Niro, Michael Keaton, Michelle Monaghan y Adam Scott. Es imposible que no te emociones al saber que esos actores van a compartir una trama y que esta sea un thriller psicológico y de suspenso. Apenas vi el poster sabía que algo bueno había en ese film, no unes a esos nombres para hacer cualquier cosa. Y es que si, estamos ante una historia que por casi dos horas te va a mantener pegado a la pantalla tratando de resolver un caso que involucra a todos los personajes. Creo que es un gran privilegio poder ver a gente como De Niro y Keaton en films de plataformas digitales pero sobretodo en historias de calidad y que valen la pena verlas sin ningún tipo de dudas.
We have Tom Kennedy (Adam Scott), a crime novelist who moves with his son Jake to a new town after his wife's death. Jake is a quiet and kind boy, but somewhat scarred by his mother's passing. Tom tries his best for him, and so, little by little, they begin to overcome their grief. One night, Jake disappears under very strange circumstances (he tends to imagine things, so it's a hypothesis that this is why he left). The detail is that this disappearance doesn't go unnoticed, as several other child abductions have recently occurred, raising serious concerns. Since coincidences don't exist, a connection is soon established between what is happening now and a very dark past.
Tenemos a Tom Kennedy (Adam Scott), un escritor de novelas policiales que se muda con su hijo Jake a un pueblo nuevo tras la muerte de su esposa. Jake es un niño tranquilo y amable pero un poco marcado por la muerte de su madre. Tom trata de hacer lo mejor posible por él por lo que si, poco a poco van superando las cosas. Un noche Jake desaparece de una manera muy extraña (él tiende a imaginar cosas por lo que es una hipótesis que se haya ido por eso). El detalle es que esta desaparición no pasa desapercibida ya que recientemente se han activado otros secuestros de varios niños más por lo que las alarmas se prenden. Como las casualidades no existen pronto se establecerá una conexión entre lo que está pasando en la actualidad con un pasado bien oscuro.
The similarities emerge, and everything is reminiscent of Frank Carter, "The Whisper Man" (Michael Keaton), a notorious serial killer of children who has been in prison for some 30 years. Given the potential for connections, Detective Beck (Michelle Monaghan), along with Pete Willis (De Niro), Tom's father and the police officer who apprehended Carter, decide to join forces to unravel the mystery surrounding the disappearances, find Jake, and discover if everything that's happening is the work of a copycat, an accomplice, or if "The Whisper Man" is indeed involved. The film's premise is captivating, though somewhat commonplace. I think what truly matters here are the driving forces, the motivations behind some of the characters' actions. Throughout the film, you'll witness strange and questionable behaviors that lend a touch of perversion and a macabre feel, highlighting how twisted human nature can be.
Las similitudes aparecen y todo recuerda a Frank Carter "The Whisper Man" (Michael Keaton), un famoso asesino serial de niños pero que lleva como 30 años en la cárcel. Pudiendo haber ciertos nexos la detective Beck (Michelle Monaghan) junto a Pete Willis (De Niro), el padre de Tom y policía que atrapó a Carter, deciden unir fuerzas para desenredar todo el misterio que hay con las desapariciones, encontrar a Jake y descubrir si todo lo que está pasando es producto de un imitador, un cómplice o si "The Whisper Man" en efecto tiene algo que ver. La premisa del film es atrapante aunque un poco común. Creo que lo que realmente vale acá son los motores, las motivaciones que tienen algunos de los personajes para hacer lo que terminan haciendo. A lo largo de la película verán comportamientos raros y cuestionables los cuales dan un toque de perversión y una sensación macabra y es que la naturaleza humana puede ser muy retorcida.
Besides being a psychological thriller, this is also a police procedural because, at the end of the day, we're searching for a culprit through clues, hunches, and conversations. This creates not only the tension and suspense of knowing someone is committing these crimes, but also the challenge of figuring out who's behind it all—a kind of puzzle, a game of putting the pieces together. I didn't find it boring at all. It's true that it takes a little while to get going, but once it does, it becomes very interesting. There are a couple of striking plot twists, especially in the final scene; honestly, I didn't expect what was revealed there. It's a film that delves deeply into the nature and potential of parent-child relationships. There's an interesting ambiguity because it shows both sides of the coin, the best and the worst, and that's precisely what defines this story.
Esto además de ser un thriller psicológico es uno policial porque al final del día estamos buscando a un culpable a través de pistas, corazonadas y conversaciones lo que hace que no solo tengamos la tensión y el suspenso de que alguien está cometiendo estos crímenes sino que también tengamos la parte de descifrar quien está detrás de todo, esa especie de juego o rompecabezas e ir uniendo piezas. A mi no me pareció aburrida, es verdad que tarda un poco en arrancar pero cuando lo hace se pone muy interesante. Hay par de plot twist bien llamativos, sobretodo el de su escena final; honestamente no esperaba lo que se revela ahí. Es un film que toca mucho lo que es y/o pueden ser las relaciones entre padres e hijos, hay una ambigüedad interesante porque muestran las dos caras de la moneda, lo mejor y lo peor y es precisamente eso lo que marca esta historia.
Speaking of the performances, I have to say they were all very good. I especially liked Keaton's work; he plays an unsettling character whose ending is questionable and will surely generate discussion. Perhaps I was expecting a little more? Maybe. I don't know why, but even though the film is good, I'm left with the feeling that it could have been better. What I will say is that it's adequate; I don't think it's as bad as the critics say. Adam Scott is a very good actor, and with the films he's been making lately (Hokum and now this one), he's demonstrating how good he is, and Michelle is always a sure thing. I won't even mention Robert De Niro because his presence alone is enough; the man is 83 years old, asking for more is absurd. In short, it's a good film; it keeps you attentive and on the edge of your seat, with good suspense and drama, but above all, a good ending, or at least a decent one. If you like thrillers, then this film is for you. I've included the trailer below for you to check out.
Hablando de las actuaciones hay que decir que todas estuvieron muy buenas, me gustó mucho el trabajo de Keaton, es un personaje incomodo cuyo cierre es cuestionable y que seguro dará de que hablar. Probablemente esperaba un poco más? - puede ser. No se porque a pesar de que la película es buena me queda la sensación de que pudo haber sido mejor. Lo que si te digo es que cumple, no siento que sean tan mala como dice la critica. Adam Scott es muy buen actor, con las películas que está haciendo últimamente (Hokum y ahora esta) está demostrando lo bueno que es y Michelle siempre es garantía. No hablo de Robert De Niro porque solo con su presencia es suficiente, el hombre tiene 83 años, pedirle más es absurdo. En fin, es una buena película, te mantiene atento y a la expectativa, buen suspenso y drama pero sobretodo, buen final o por lo menos está decente. Si te gustan los thrillers pues este film es para ti. Por acá abajo les dejo el tráiler para que le echen un ojo.
