Hello friends, good vibes to everyone.

Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.

It’s October 12th, and we’re continuing to review great horror films—movies you really ought to have seen by now—during this "spooky season." This time, the spotlight falls on a film by the talented Robert Eggers—the first of many he has created. The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu are among his major titles, all of which fall under the umbrella of folk horror—a genre that doesn't rely on cheap startles to frighten the audience. The Witch is a story based on real accounts; in fact, some of the dialogue was drawn directly from period records—a time when defying church doctrine was considered a crime. The horror Eggers presents here isn't the typical jump-scare fare, nor will you see witches flying on broomsticks; instead, the plot features genuine evil and dark forces, while also showcasing the truly terrible depths of human nature.

A married couple with five children is expelled from the plantation where they live after clashing with the local religious and civil authorities. As Puritans, their view of the church differed from that of the local Catholics—a conflict that ultimately forced them to leave. With nowhere safe to go, they settle on a remote farm near a forest rumored to be cursed and inhabited by strange forces. This theory gains credence when the youngest sibling, Samuel, suddenly vanishes while in the care of his older sister, Thomasin (Anya Taylor-Joy). Far from uniting the family, the incident fuels paranoia and mistrust among them, leading them to suspect that Thomasin herself is to blame for this misfortune—and for the calamities yet to come.

Following this, crops begin to rot, animals turn up dead or behaving strangely, and even Thomasin’s younger siblings—the twins—display odd behavior and engage in nonsensical conversations. Clearly, the family’s fanaticism is such that they prioritize their beliefs over the natural affection that ought to exist between them. Thomasin consistently maintains her innocence, insisting that a witch hiding in the dense forest is behind it all; one can easily imagine the resulting friction within the family. From this point on, we witness the gradual disintegration of what was once a happy, united family. As previously mentioned, this is not a horror film that aims to startle the viewer with a barrage of fleeting scares; quite the opposite. It is a slow-burn film that gradually immerses us in a darkness embodied not only by the witch and her rituals but also by the characters' paranoia. Add to this the fact that the film relies on the viewer to imagine the unfolding scenarios—and therein lies the true suspense.

Visually, it is spectacular; Eggers possesses the magic of creating a consistently dark and deeply unsettling atmosphere, making the viewing experience far more impactful. There are scenes featuring glimpses of rituals, strange shadows, and the occasional presence lurking among the towering trees, yet ultimately, everything remains abstract and elusive—and that is precisely where the imagination I mentioned earlier comes into play. Watching the film evokes the sensation that something is constantly watching, something is lying in wait; the forest itself becomes a character in its own right, with its sounds, its mist, and its shifting shapes. Of course, the evil here does not stem entirely from the witch; rather, it is something that has always been present within the family, manifesting through religious fanaticism, oppression, guilt, and the like. It reveals that human beings can serve as vessels for absolute evil.

If I recall correctly, this is the first film where Anya Taylor-Joy demonstrates that she possessed the makings of a great actress from a very young age. While the film doesn't rest entirely on her shoulders, her performance is incredible and convincing. Ralph Ineson is one of Eggers' favorites—he has appeared in several of his films—and he truly never disappoints. Kate Dickie, playing the mother, is also outstanding here; she portrays a character deeply burdened and consumed by misfortune, sorrow, and her own fanaticism. Even the children do an exceptional job; I can honestly say that, in terms of acting, this story is a 10/10. Ultimately, this film is a horror classic—specifically the kind of slow-burn horror that builds in your mind. There is no gore and no jump scares; just the suspense of knowing something terrible lurks out there in the shadows. Evil can take many forms. Highly recommended if you enjoy folk horror. It has a runtime of an hour and a half. If you’ve already seen it, let me know what you think in the comments. Here is the trailer for those who haven't seen it yet.
