To the comedies, I ask you to please show me a good time, make me laugh a couple of times. That's what I wanted when I decided to see this movie that has the label of being a comedy and in this post I give my opinion.

What's the plot? The plot is absurd, typical of this type of comedy. Herschel and Sarah Greenbaum, after falling in love and getting married in Poland in 1920, decide to emigrate to America. They are very happy about the new life they are going to start and the baby that is about to come. But Herschel, who works in a pickle factory, has an accident, falls into the pickle container, and remains in brine for a hundred years. When he wakes up in today's New York City, he discovers he has a descendant, a great-grandson named Ben Greenbaum. At first they will have a cordial relationship, but quickly, they will come into conflict.
First I'm going to tell you that Seth Rogen is an actor that I resent seeing on screen. I've seen his previous movies and I don't like his voice, especially when he yells. That doesn't stop me from seeing the movies he's in. When I saw that in this movie he has two characters, I looked for the strength within me, to see Seth Rogen's dubbing. I'm a masochist! hahaha.
To my surprise, the actor is less euphoric in this movie. It's one of his less screaming performances, I think I'm even starting to like it.
The beginning of the story seems to me to be the best part of the film, the brief moments of the past, telling the love story between Herschel and Sarah, with its dose of humor, moved me, the film promised to be entertaining. Those first sequences didn't make me laugh, but the funny parts were nice.
The problem is when the main character is in the present. I was hoping for a comedy that would exploit the jokes to the fullest while the man from the past collides with the present. In similar comedies the jokes and pranks with the man from the past, he confronts the environment, culture and technology. In this film they do, but only at very specific moments. Because Herschel's character adapts very quickly to a new world.

It is precisely in the small moments when the character acts and expresses his conservative ideas, according to the time from which he comes, that the parts are most hilarious. The scene of the debate, in which he shouts his archaic ideas, is wonderful, because it is a criticism of the current society of that country. But that is quickly addressed and only on the surface. They didn't want to get into deep water, the irreverence only lasts a few minutes.
My laugh was also brief, the best part of the film is very short. Taking stock of the film as a whole, the comedy part is really short, that's my opinion, because the rest of the film didn't do me any good. They have nice, emotional and other situations where they hope to make the viewer laugh, but in my case, it's a very soft type of humour and it doesn't make me burst out laughing.
The only thing I don't forgive in the film is that the character Sarah Snook plays is very small. The beautiful actress has made a name for herself in the series Succession, where she is excellent. Her presence in this comedy motivated me to watch it, unfortunately her character appears only in the first part.
When she finishes watching the film, there is a pleasant feeling, because her message of family unity and beauty. The two characters, played by the same actor, who for a large part of the film confront each other, manage to make peace, respect each other and unite to achieve success. But in my case, I was left wanting to laugh. It's not the comedy I expected, it's just an attempt to be daring, but it ends up being very conventional.
This can be explained, in part, by the fact that the story is based on a short story called Sell Out. Maybe the story would have worked better if they had made a short film, the idea is good, but the way situations develop prevents it from finding a definite path. He wants to be comedy and drama at the same time, but there's no balance.
The film is directed by Brandon Trost, this is his second experience as a director, but he has a lot of experience as a director of photography in several films, besides being a friend of Seth, with whom he has collaborated in several films of the actor, The Interview, Neighbors, This is the End, etc. He doesn't do a surprising job, for the moment he is only suitable for this HBOmax production

Although she didn't make me laugh as I expected, Sarah Snook's appearance was brief and I had to put up with Seth Rogen twice, it left me with a pleasant feeling. It's hard to explain, it's not a good movie, but it's not bad either. It's neutral.
If you like soft comedies, this could be your movie to watch over the weekend.

My Ranking: 2.5/5
