The latest film, starring Jessica Chastein, promised to be a good action thriller, but it has not lived up to expectations.

What is the plot? Ava works for a secret agency, a kind of private contractor that provides services to the government. She is a professional assassin, a deadly weapon trained to execute risky missions. But she also has personal problems, she is an alcoholic because of an event that happened in the past, with her father. She decides to visit her family (mother and sister) whom she has not seen for eight years, during which time the organization sends her on a mission. But it is a trap, the mission goes wrong and now she will be a target.

A story that we have seen on many occasions, that of the expert assassin who, after a bad job, the bosses decide to give the order to eliminate him. Only that he is a hard to defeat killing machine. In this case, it is a woman assassin, in the style of such successes as Nikita, Atomic Blonde, Red Sparrow, etc.
The characters of professional female assassins attract me, I like to see a beautiful woman fighting and killing. I have enjoyed these stories a lot, including the 1993 American remake of Nikita, starring Bridget Fonda, which was one of my favorite movies.
An expert in developing stories of professional killers, is Luc Besson. He wrote and directed Nikita and laid the groundwork for it to be copied into other films. He has even repeated himself, with his film Lucy, starring Scarlett Joahnsson and recently the film Anna, where he tells another similar story. (Organization that trains beautiful women to be killers).
The stories always handle similar elements: the protagonist is beautiful, a problematic past ( crime, drugs or alcohol ), there is a protective character for the girl and the organization ends up setting a trap for her. During the intervals the respective action scenes are added and you already have an excellent action movie starring a tough woman.
But unfortunately, Ava never gets as good as the above mentioned movies. After a good introduction of the main character fulfilling a mission and some attractive opening credits, the story starts to descend the steps of the ladder. For a moment I thought about stopping the playback and forgetting about it, but I had to watch it until the end to give a fair evaluation.
The worst thing was the family subplot, which didn't interest me at all, although the character of Ava's mother is an actress that I adore, it didn't get me interested because of the ridiculous family conflict. Situations that contributed nothing to the story, were not even a good justification for the alcoholism of the protagonist.
I hoped that the action scenes would be worthwhile, but they weren't. They are badly shot and even the actors seem discouraged. I think even the action stuntmen were not in a fighting mood. But the most ridiculous thing was the final action scene, especially its resolution. It's the kind of scene that I accept in a B movie, but in this one that they promote as a first-class production, with award-winning actors, I don't accept something so ridiculous.
How could I bear to see it complete? My weakness is the beautiful actresses, the main character of the film was the only reason to endure until the end. I would recommend it for a Sunday afternoon, but I don't think it's worth watching. I've seen better action movies lately, made with less money and unknown actors, far superior to this one.

The film is directed by Tate Taylor, a filmmaker who caught my attention a few years ago with the excellent Get On Up films about the life of singer James Brown and also directed the award-winning film The Help. But something has happened with this director, after making The Girl on the Train, his films have lost the quality of his other works, it seems that he is doing these works to order. It is very strange, but it seems that he does not master action productions well.
Oscar winner Jessica Chastein is the protagonist of the story, playing the killer Ava. The lethal woman who fulfills her missions, but wants to know the motives, wants to know what the targets have done so that she can be given the order to eliminate them. The film is made for her to shine. The actress is great, talented and beautiful, but the script and direction are so bad that it is an impossible job. The actress worked with the director on the film "The Help" and in Ava she has the role of executive producer.
John Malkovich plays Duke, Ava's protective mentor, who trained and recruited her after they served together in the military. The actor gives us an eccentric character, as always, the actor has become the same character several times. Collin Farrell plays the villain Simon, who orders Ava's death. He was also trained by the Duke, but is now in charge. Bad character and bad acting.
The beautiful Geena Davis, at 64, is still charming. The actress plays Bobbi, Ava's mother. A supporting character and part of the family plot. Although the story is bad, it is nice to see this actress. Rapper Common has a role in the film, playing Ava's ex-boyfriend and current partner of Ava's sister, but his character is forgettable.

Deep disappointment and relief when I saw the final credits of this film, which promised to be a new story of a female assassin/spy, with a respectable cast that seems to have done this work with discouragement.
Watch it at your own risk, but be warned.
