I found a place

I saw this movie that's become a huge box office hit and everyone's talking about it. I have to say, this movie is a product of the current generation because it was directed by a 21-year-old named Kane Parsons, who has fulfilled a dream many people have. Going from YouTube to Hollywood with this success has been a huge achievement for him. Many other YouTubers must dream of this too. I started researching how much it cost to produce the movie and found online that it cost $10 million, but the box office gross... Oh my God! At the time of writing, according to the websites I consulted, the box office gross is around $400 million. It's incredible!
Well, the new star director will surely receive tons of job offers, and it's possible they'll also make a sequel to this movie. I'm not sure, because I haven't checked that information, but when a horror movie makes that much money, it's almost certain that the producers will rub their hands together and decide to annoy us all by releasing a bunch of sequels. So we have to enjoy it while the plot is good, because they'll surely ruin it later. That's Hollywood, and that's the world; we all want that money.
What can I say about this movie? Did I like it? Yes. Is all the hype justified? Well, not really. I'm venturing into murky waters with an unpopular opinion. I like to give my positive opinion when I like something, and when something is bad, I say so too. I don't follow trends, and no Hollywood studio pays me for positive reviews, since I'm not a film influencer. That's how those big film critics are, the ones with a guaranteed salary for speaking well of a movie.
Backrooms manages to unsettle me by immersing me in those settings, in that place the protagonist finds within the company where he works. A place that seems to have many nooks and crannies, with a predominantly yellow and minimalist atmosphere. A kind of infinite labyrinth that expands without making it clear how or where certain very particular creatures live.
I'm sure many people, after seeing the film, were left searching for some explanation for what they saw, but there's no clear answer—the film never provides one—about what that place is. The filmmaker surely has their own vision of what it is and represents, and at the same time, each viewer can form their own idea. For me, it's like a kind of parallel dimension that feeds on the fears of those who manage to enter it. Each new floor, level, environment is like a recreation of what lies in our minds, the most hidden parts, and what can frighten us the most. That's my opinion; I'm sure yours is different.
Current horror cinema, as I mentioned in a recent post about another film in the genre, seems to focus more on creating disturbing atmospheres, which is fine, but those images should also be accompanied by a solid story. There are many films like that, which combine a good, coherent story with atmospheres that impact the viewer. I recently saw another film, from last year, that meets both requirements. I'll talk about it another day.
That's my problem with Backrooms. I liked the film, but at the same time, I felt that the impression it leaves is based solely on its visuals; what truly constitutes a well-constructed and interesting story simply isn't there. It's more of a succession of levels within that world, whose images, of course, fascinated me and raise questions, but it lacks something more substantial. That's why I say it's a product of this generation, where the ephemeral impact of images is everything.
It's curious that they chose two actors acclaimed and awarded for other work. Chiwetel Ejiofor is quite well-known and fulfills his role as Clark; his performance isn't anything extraordinary, but he's a Hollywood star. Renate Reinshee is less well-known, but she has received praise for other work; I liked her character, especially when she enters that unknown dimension.
I recommend it; now it's up to you to decide if you consider it a masterpiece of horror this year or a disappointment. Share your opinion in the comments.
¿Me gustó?
