Police stories have a great appeal to the public. In my case it is the only thing I like about the police, in real life I have rejection towards the security forces, because of so many cases of police abuse, mistreatment, corruption etc.
This time it is a series from the UK, specifically made in Ireland, a detail that caught my attention. If you have been following me for a long time, you will know that I have a predilection for series made in that part of the world. Perhaps because they often work with actors who are not well known worldwide, bringing more credibility to the story, plus I notice a higher level both in the scripts and in the production.
The creators of this series have a lot of experience in this kind of productions. Gilles Banier is the most experienced and I have seen other series. One of them was Trigger Point, which I reviewed some time ago and which told the story of a bomb squad, a series that is about to do a second season. Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson are the other creators who are making a name for themselves in the industry. From both of them I have previously seen The Salisbury and Hidden Agent.
Las historias policiales tienen un gran atractivo para el público. En mi caso es lo único que me gusta de la policía, en la vida real tengo rechazo hacia las fuerzas de seguridad, por tantos casos de abusos policiales, malos tratos, corrupción etc.
En esta ocasión se trata de una serie del Reino Unido, concretamente realizada en Irlanda, detalle que me llamó la atención. Si me sigues desde hace tiempo, sabrás que tengo predilección por las series hechas en esa parte del mundo. Quizás porque muchas veces trabajan con actores que no son muy conocidos a nivel mundial, aportando más credibilidad a la historia, además noto un mayor nivel tanto en los guiones como en la producción.
Los creadores de esta serie tienen bastante experiencia en este tipo de producciones. Gilles Banier es el más experimentado y he visto otras series. Una de ellas fue Trigger Point, que reseñé hace algún tiempo y que contaba la historia de un escuadrón de artificieros, una serie que está por hacer una segunda temporada. Declan Lawn y Adam Patterson son los otros creadores que se están haciendo un nombre en la industria. De ambos he visto anteriormente The Salisbury y Hidden Agent.
The three minds behind Blue Lights know how to handle the essential elements of a crime series that aspires to stand out. Another very important aspect for a successful police series is the construction of each of the characters. From the smallest to the most important they are three dimensional, they are beings with a story behind them and the performances of the cast drive them. I remember many years ago, an American series about cops and firefighters, called Thrid Watch, kept me hooked thanks to the chemistry the characters conveyed on screen. The same is true here, and at a much higher level, because if there is one thing that characterizes most productions coming out of the UK, it is the quality of the performers.

El uso del ritmo, haciendo pausas cuando la intención dramática lo necesita e intensificándolo cuando quieren aumentar la tensión y la emoción en el espectador. Decoración y ambientación intentando que sea lo más real posible, para darnos la sensación de inmersión, de esta forma tendremos la sensación de estar acompañando a los policías. Además de un uso adecuado de temas habituales en los dramas policiales junto con cliffhanger que nos empujen a querer saber que va a pasar.
Otro aspecto muy importante para que una serie policial tenga éxito es la construcción de cada uno de los personajes. Desde el más pequeño hasta el más importante son tridimensionales, son seres con una historia detrás y las actuaciones del elenco los impulsan. Recuerdo que hace muchos años, una serie americana sobre policías y bomberos, llamada Thrid Watch, me mantuvo enganchado gracias a la química que transmitían los personajes en pantalla. En esta ocasión ocurre lo mismo y a un nivel muy superior, porque si algo caracteriza a la mayoría de las producciones procedentes del Reino Unido es la calidad de los intérpretes.
The location of the story gives it a special added value. Northern Ireland, specifically in one of the counties of the city of Belfast, a place with a sad past full of deaths due to the war conflict whose scars have not healed and remain latent in the streets of the neighborhoods where criminal groups operate. Rejection of the police is very high and many of them may even receive death threats. In the series, being a police officer in such an environment makes the job more complicated.
It is not a procedural series, there is an overarching plot, about a criminal gang led by a former member of the IRA, where uniformed officers will be involved and which will bring tragic consequences for many. This goes hand in hand with the stories of the three rookie cops who must earn their place and interact with the other police characters who have been on the force longer. Although each episode touches on a few isolated cases, they always move the overall story forward, evolving each character until the end of the season where everything is closed and at the same time a door is left open for the second season.
Impossible not to feel affected at the end of the season, not only by the painful events that occur, but also by the quality of the episode, where an empire may fall but at a very high cost for some. But that's how the damned life is, unfair and painful, it hits you hard, makes you fall, but you have to get up and keep fighting. In one of the episodes, the character Stevie explains to Grace, an idealist whose previous job was as a social worker, to follow orders, that the job of a cop is to pick up shit that comes out of a pool screaming and put a patch on it without asking questions or worrying about what will happen next.
Blue Lighs is an intense series about men and women in blue working in a hostile environment. Exciting and with endearing characters. An excellent choice for those who like police dramas.

La localización de la historia le da un añadido especial. Irlanda del Norte, concretamente en uno de los condados de la ciudad de Belfast, un lugar con un triste pasado lleno de muertes debido al conflicto bélico cuyas cicatrices no han sanado y permanecen latentes en las calles de los barrios donde operan los grupos criminales. El rechazo a la policía es muy alto y muchos de ellos pueden llegar a recibir amenazas de muerte. En la serie, ser policía en un entorno así hace que el trabajo sea más complicado.
No es una serie procedimental, hay una trama general, sobre una banda criminal liderada por un antiguo miembro del IRA, donde los uniformados se verán involucrados y que traerá trágicas consecuencias para muchos. Esto va de la mano con las historias de los tres policías novatos que deben ganarse su lugar e interactuar con los otros personajes policiales que llevan más tiempo en el cuerpo. Aunque cada episodio toca algunos casos aislados, siempre hacen avanzar la historia general, haciendo evolucionar a cada personaje hasta el final de la temporada donde todo queda cerrado y al mismo tiempo se deja una puerta abierta para la segunda temporada.
Imposible no sentirse afectado al final de la temporada, no sólo por los dolorosos acontecimientos que ocurren, sino también por la calidad del episodio, donde un imperio puede caer pero a un coste muy alto para algunos. Pero así es la condenada vida, injusta y dolorosa, te golpea fuerte, te hace caer, pero hay que levantarse y seguir luchando. En uno de los episodios, el personaje Stevie le explica a Grace, una idealista cuyo anterior trabajo era de asistente social, que cumpla órdenes, que el trabajo de policía consiste en recoger la mierda que sale de una piscina gritando y ponerle un parche sin hacer preguntas ni preocuparse por lo que pasará después.
Blue Lighs es una serie intensa sobre hombres y mujeres de azul que trabajan en un entorno hostil. Emocionante y con personajes entrañables. Una excelente opción para quienes gustan de los dramas policiales.
