Wild weekend

You’re in a long-term relationship and decide to blow your savings on a weekend getaway to a beautiful, luxurious house in the woods. It’s the perfect setting to walk around naked and spend the weekend making love like rabbits. But—there’s always a "but"—something unexpected happens.
That’s the premise of Bone Lake, a film that was well-received at the Sitges Festival and even nominated for Best Film. On paper, it’s a movie that shouldn't work—or at least it’s surprising that it does—but I found it incredibly entertaining.
Filmmaker Mercedes Bryce Morgan creates a blend that could easily have been a disaster; yet, that daring combination is precisely what makes the movie fun. It starts as a romance—strangers meeting, comic situations, leaning slightly toward comedy—but then transforms into a psychological horror game that culminates in a finale filled with terror, death, and gallons of blood. Oh, and amidst all that, there’s room for something sexy: a touch of erotica.
It’s true—as others have noted—that the film is somewhat predictable. You start to see where it’s all heading: who is lying, who is hiding something, and how it’s all part of something much more macabre. Nothing happens by chance, and the rental of the house for the weekend wasn't a mix-up; there’s a reason for everything, leading to a pretty wild and sinister conclusion.
The film features only four characters: Sage and Diego. The couple has been together for years and has fallen into a rut; she is sexually unsatisfied because he doesn't satisfy her the way he should. He aspires to be a writer, while she shoulders the financial burden. Then there’s the other couple renting the place—Will and Cin—who are younger, more attractive, and exude erotic energy; ...represent the embodiment of temptation for both members of the original couple. With these four characters in play, the situation is destined to turn into an all-out bloodbath.
Diego strikes me as the perfect idiot. He embodies the kind of transformation people want to see in men—especially those of the newer generations. He drives an electric car, is politically correct, hates raising his voice, and is an utter coward; he seems to have suppressed even his survival instinct, screaming like a fool when a woman attacks him, despite being a man and biologically stronger. Although his inner "caveman alpha male" eventually surfaces, he spends most of the movie acting like an insecure teenager from the "snowflake" generation.
The filmmaker has previously directed a horror movie—one I haven't seen yet but plan to track down. It’s titled Spoonful of Sugar, and I’m curious to see her early forays into the genre. In this case, the result is good; it’s an entertaining film that doesn't try to rewrite the rules or reinvent the genre, yet manages to deliver a fun and enjoyable experience.
If you like horror movies that blend humor with sensual scenes, you have to watch it. I hope you enjoy the film and have a good time; let me know what you think in the comments.
