The documentary explores the hard blow that organized crime received in New York City in the 1970s & 1980s.

Through the statements of FBI agents who worked for years to deliver the death blow to the mafia. For a long time, they worked to arrest the soldiers, the disposable people, who could be convicted of various crimes, pay their sentence and return to the streets to continue working under the orders of their families.

It was a game of cat and mouse, in which it was impossible to accuse the captains and capos of the five families that controlled crime in New York. Everything changed when it occurred to them to use an old law to make a joint case to be able to reach the bosses of the mafia families: the RICO law (In this link you can read more about that law)

One of the tools used to build a case against the mafia was the installation of microphones. The documentary shows some of the FBI agents in charge of entering the sites where they were to be installed. Experts trained to go unnoticed, infiltrate and place the bug without care. Always in danger of being discovered.

The anecdotes of how they managed to trick the boss of the bosses into entering their house and placing a microphone are very funny. Also when they installed the microphone in the car of one of the captains, which caused them to drain the battery of the vehicle, running the risk of being discovered.

The documentary is told from the point of view of the police officers in the investigation, so there is no reference anywhere to the police corruption that was partly complicit in organized crime. This is the only thing that the documentary does not show or tell. What they do take advantage of to show us, were the links of the construction magnates, who would start building incredible skyscrapers in the city, all had to pay the mafia to be able to carry out their projects, among them, the current president of that country. By then, any construction had to pay the mafia.

The mafia dominated all the unions, controlled the garbage, the ports, the markets, the construction, everything! Through the cement club, made up of eight companies, they decided the overpricing of construction materials, the tenders, etc. Anyone who decided to go behind their back would end up badly, possibly dead.

The entire criminal empire was controlled by the five major Mafia families in New York. Together they called themselves The Commission. Proving the existence of the commission was vital to carrying out proceedings against the wealthy leaders of the mafia.

Rudy Giulian's testimony could not be missed, he by then, a young prosecutor, was one of the faces known for building the case against the leaders of the mafia. It was during this time that he became famous, which would serve him well to become the mayor of New York in 1994. There are many films that have dealt with the subject, based on real events, some are masterpieces. This documentary tells us some things we already know, but it does so at an incredible pace, worthy of a fiction film, in just three episodes.

It's amazing to see the typical Mafia people, with their accent and voice style, realizing that there is a lot of reality in the Mafia people we have seen played by actors in the movies. One of the interviewees was a mafia soldier, in charge of collecting the money. Hearing him speak reminded me of Joe Pesci's character in Godfellas.

Many people have a bad perception of documentaries, they think they are boring, but in this case, it is a documentary with a vibrant editing, with a rhythm similar to that of a thriller, exciting and addictive.

Even if the topic of the Mafia doesn't interest you, I'm absolutely sure that this documentary will not leave you indifferent and you will like it.

Filmmaker Sam Hobkinson does an extraordinary job, the director knows how to make a documentary for the viewers of this era. It seems to be inspired by the great films about the Mafia, with a narrative of events that gives no rest, and the use of visual resources that make us remain attentive to each scene.

The three-episode mini documentary series is available on netflix
