Political comedy directed by Jon Stewart and starring the great Steve Carrell and Rose Bryne. I saw it a couple of nights ago and today I give you my opinion about this film.

What is the plot of Irresistible?
Gary Zimmer is a political strategist for the Democratic Party. After Hillary lost the election, one of his aides shows him a video of a town hall meeting where a farmer, a former army colonel, opposes the policies of the current mayor. Zimmer travels to this faraway place to convince former Colonel Jack Hastings to run for mayor for the Democratic Party. Everything seems to be going according to plan, but the current mayor, Major Braun, will be supported by the Republicans, who will send political strategist Faith Brewster to organize the reelection campaign. Gary and Faith will go head-to-head, using all the tools at their disposal, to help their candidates win the mayoral race.

For those of us who are not from the United States, movies or series dealing with politics can be boring and complicated. The jargon used among political strategists, we can hardly understand.
I think that for many citizens of this country, their entire political system is very complicated and few understand it completely. That's why films that deal with elections or are set within an election campaign in that nation don't work very well outside its borders.
There are things I don't understand about that electoral system, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying films with that storyline. In this case, Irresistible is a comedy, which makes it easier for all audiences to digest.
The last few days I've been waiting to see a good comedy. So far they've been good films, but I still haven't found a recent comedy that has an excellent rating.
Irresistible has scenes that managed to make me laugh. They are few, but enough to make the film not boring. Unlike the previous comedy I saw and reviewed a few days ago, in Irresistible I notice a better balance between the comedy scenes and the more serious scenes.

The best part is Gary's clash of lifestyles, which comes from the big city, with the lifestyle of that town, located deep in the country, where all the inhabitants know each other. And to give a further boost, other comic situations are created, when the character of Faith appears, who arrives to support the current mayor.
I would have liked Faith's character to have had a greater presence, even though he is at the beginning of the film, then doesn't appear until after a good part of the film. I wanted to see more funny confrontations between the two political strategists.
It's a comedy, but it has room to show the sad reality of many villages in that country, which are in a bad economic situation, with no work for their inhabitants, with closed factories and their system in decline.
It also takes the opportunity to throw darts at the current government, but all very subtly. Perhaps too soft for my taste. Another comedy that deals with the subject without much irreverence, it seems that they don't want to bother any sector. I think all the current comedies follow that format.

The film is written and directed by Jon Stewart, the famous and multi-award winning host of The Daily Show. With a great success record, he's back in the director's chair. In 2014 he released a feature film called 118 Days, with Gael Garcia Bernal, which was a total drama, which received somewhat mixed reviews from specialists. Now, his second film, is a genre he masters very well, so my expectations were higher. I feel that it fell short.
Steve Carrell , the renowned actor, plays Gary Zimmer, the most important character in history. He's also the one who brings most of the fun situations to the table. This actor has the gift of making something fun out of any scene, no matter how absurd it is. As his antagonist, actress Rose Byrne plays the Republican strategist Faith Brewster, it's Gary's version in female. Both are smart, cool, experienced in big-city political battles.

In the rest of the cast we find veteran actor Chris Cooper playing Jack Hastings, the tough man who will take on the commitment of running for the Democratic Party, in a city where the majority is Republican. Brent Sexton, who has appeared in many successful television series, plays the mayor, Major Braun. And Mackenzie Davis, who most people know from the latest film in the Terminator saga, plays Diana Hastings, the daughter of the candidate who tried to win the election. Her role is small, but of great importance in the resolution of the whole story.

It's not a sour comedy as I expected, on the contrary, it felt very sweet. But it has funny scenes that show me a good time. I didn't get bored and spent the whole time looking at how the story would end, which has a very interesting surprise twist, which I liked. An unexpected twist, where the political sharks will get a lesson, with a dose of their own tricks.
If you don't mind getting tangled up in the political terms of the American electoral system, you can watch this film for its funny moments.

My Ranking: 2.8/5
